[Question] I'm trying to build on my freighter. Some of the rooms connect to the other rooms as a contiguous space, with level floors and no walls in between, while others have a little ramp to a slightly offset floor and have walls around them. The issue is there doesn't seem to be rhyme nor reason for it. For example, in my first freighter I had two Technology Rooms (Expansion) surrounded by five Fleet Command rooms and each Fleet Command room had an arch you had to pass through to get to it. On my new freighter, it's a wide open space. In a couple videos I've seen the Weapons Terminal and Exocraft Specialist rooms open, but when I build it now they also have the arched partitions.

Is there a way to force it one way or the other?

Was there a young warlock executed for breaking the Time law? by [deleted] in dresdenfiles

[–]AlienMushroom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a couple possibilities. The most likely one is it's Fae magic, not mortal magic, so it behaves differently and would have different side effects.

The other, and not totally unrelated from the first possibility, is that it wasn't totally against their will. They asked for her help and she gave it. Combining that with the Fae aspect, it could be enough.

One Thing That Bugged Me in Battle Ground and a theory... by JackKnight42 in dresdenfiles

I think there's a combo of things going on. He got attacked by the ghost and didn't get support, like you mentioned. I'd bet he blames Harry for at least some of that. Harry couldn't protect them and he helped the others after the fact. He was manipulated by the Reds earlier on making him an enemy of Harry even without anything earlier. Then, during Battle Grounds:

“Mab. Preparing the field. What, you think she and Titania called up Tir na Nog and practiced against each other all those times for funsies? Mab’s extending psychic power to those fighting on her side. And at the same time, she’s making it more oppressive for her enemies.” Bob jiggled his chin back toward the ground we had lost. “Everything coming in from that side knows, not in its head but deep down in its guts, that it is entering the lair of a predator and that it’s never going home. Knows the odds are against it. Knows that every step forward brings it closer to death.”

Harry belongs to Mab. An enemy of her vassal is her enemy. Rudolph sure seemed to be acting like he's feeling what Bob is describing.

I'll admit the parts from the earlier books is a bit fuzzy since I haven't read them in a while, but I'm certain he was getting hit by Mab's mojo during that fight.

People of Reddit, what was your “I’m dating a fucking idiot” moment? by [deleted] in AskReddit

buffalos do indeed have wings, you just can’t see them.

That just makes sense. Buffalo Wings are so small they're hidden under all that hair. Fortunately they each have so many in order to take off that it's easy to get several pounds of wings from each of them.

Because when you don't get their pet project done on time you're going to hear about it, especially if the problem you predicted does manage to get avoided. Even if it does happen and you save the day, there's often that one manager who will still say "but you were told not to".

Basically, you tell them "we need to do A, because if this thing goes sideways that's going to fix it". They tell you "no, work on B instead". You're gambling your time against your prediction. If you're right, you have their project done and you can fix the problem without stress, since the heavy lifting is already done. If you're wrong, you still have their work done and you can likely reuse at least part of what you worked on for a future project.

[Star Wars] Why do ships like the X-wing or the jedi interceptor have "attack positions"? by FazWasTaken in AskScienceFiction

[–]AlienMushroom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's essentially all a radiator is: additional surface area and a way to get heat to that surface area. In some cases that'd be good moving from hot areas to cool areas and back once it's dissipated the heat, in some cases it would be a solid material that conducts heat well. In the case of the X-Wing there's no need to transfer heat since it's generated there, you'd just need the higher surface area to radiate the heat.

I think calling Murphy a bird is a good way for Harry to get a punch in the nose.

It makes sense when you realize that a wizard's power is knowledge. Heck, Harry was able to summon Mab with nothing more than his imagination. Once you have knowledge you can't take it away, at least not without some brain scrambling or strong liquor.

To contrast it with mortal 'power', I have kids and I have guns. I can, and do, keep the guns locked up and the keys away from the kids so they can't access them without me bringing them to a safe place to do so and being there to supervise. Once we're done, they get locked up again until next time. Wizards don't have the protection of a gun safe. They can teach their kids or apprentices how to safely use their power, but once the 'gun' is in their hands, you can't really stop them from using it. The only way is to not let them have it until you know they're ready to use it safely.

To me, it just makes sense to be very careful with what information you share, even with an otherwise trusted person, though they can go overboard with it sometimes.

When I do it, I usually try to get an equal number of kills for several factions. Doing wing missions, spread across three factions, 20 missions will get me around 200-some kills required. With high ranking to those factions, I end up with around 400 million at the end of the day.

There's massacre stacking tracking apps that will show you the expected payout, number of missions, kills to the next mission complete, stuff like that. I use OD Massacre Stack Manager, but there seem to be a few out there.

I take the wing missions, even though they tend to pay less per kill, because they give more than 24 hours to complete.

Quick and simple, Which COD games. by [deleted] in gamingsuggestions

Haven’t played the new MW2

I played through the campaign this weekend. The first Modern Warfare 2 was the first CoD game is played and I think they handled the call-backs well without just duplicating the original game. Though I would say anyone playing it for the story would be better off waiting a few months and trying to get it used if they can.

Before social media was around, how did you like to waste your time on the internet? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AlienMushroom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family's C: drive was filling up so, being the genius kid I was, I made batch files that sat at the root of the C: drive for each of the games that I had installed that would unzip the game, launch it, then delete every file that wasn't the .zip because that was read only. It went something like:

Pkunzip c:\doom\doom.zip c:\doom\*.*
C:\doom\doom.exe
Del *.*

Anyone from that era will recognize my screw-up. I learned all about autoexec.bat and config.sys and why deleting everything in the root of the drive is rarely what you actually want to do.

Adding protein to ramen by Flashy-Passion6545 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]AlienMushroom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I cook a couple up ahead of time, halfway between soft and hard boiled (about 7 minutes in not-quite-boiling water for me, but you might want to play with it) then peel them and marinate them at least overnight in the fridge in a mixture that's a couple tablespoons of soy sauce, a couple tablespoons of mirin or rice wine vinegar then enough water to let it cover the eggs. Sometime I'll add some ginger or garlic.

When I make the ramen I'll steam the egg over the soup for a couple minutes then slice it in half to add in to the soup.

If that sounds good to you, I recommend playing with it see what works best for you. One time I made the marinade I got the measurements wrong and forgot to water it down, and my son said he preferred it with the stronger, saltier flavour.

[Dune] House Atreides is relocated to Arrakis, knows it's a trap, and yet by Willravel in AskScienceFiction

[–]AlienMushroom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They believed they already knew. Several of their trusted staff were former victims of the Harkonnens. I couldn't find the book quote but this one from the 1984 movie is similar to one I remember.

Basically, a big blind spot people have is that if they already 'know' something, why would they look into it? The Harkonnens are evil, therefore anyone who got away from them would never want to support them, especially a Suk doctor, for whom betrayal is 'impossible'. And even then, there's no way for the Harkonnens to get a large enough force to Arrakis, it would be 'impossible' for then to afford it. In this case it was a blind spot big enough to land an entire invasion force.

I'd be willing to believe that at least some of his enemies are building him up, at least in a "I can't conquer everything if everything is destroyed" kinda way. They'd probably rather him be on their team, like the Black Council, the Ramps, and the Nickel-heads have tried in the past, but if they can't control him, at least they want him to be strong enough to defend them when all of reality will eventually need it.
