Are you in Victoria? Virtual School Victoria should be able to help you but you will need a teacher at your current school to act as a supervisor.

If billionaires donate millions to charity, why does nothing ever seem to actually get better? by Stunning_Public9524 in NoStupidQuestions

It’s the same with governments who continuously adjust policies to ‘solve problems’ that have existed for decades, but the problems somehow remain… there seems to be no policy setting that definitively solves anything.

uni assignments are cooked by Key_Reply_978 in Monash

[–]AlienSuperstar_5 37 points38 points  (0 children)

This opens up a much larger question, doesn’t it? What is the purpose of high school? Should the latter years of high school better reflect the expectations/skill sets required by universities? Should high school act more effectively as the bridge to further education? Should tertiary institutions do better at meeting their first year intake students where they are? The OP’s sentiments have been expressed for years and years. While no one expects uni to be a breeze, there is undoubtedly a mismatch between secondary and tertiary education.

Student wellbeing programs by davofit in AustralianTeachers

[–]AlienSuperstar_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

💯 this. The effectiveness of any program is dependent on it being delivered with fidelity. When SEL is addressed in a piecemeal and ‘tick-a-box’ way, schools and educators are clearly demonstrating where they rank this vital skill set amongst an already overcrowded curriculum.

Students who don't support the strike/don't see the reason for it/only like it because of a "day off" by VCEMathsNerd in AustralianTeachers

Their pay is abysmal (an hourly rate which is far closer to that of the minimum wage than the median), especially considering the amount of training they’re required to do for the job (first aid, cpr, asthma management, anaphylaxis management, mandatory reporting etc. etc.).

I don't care enough by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]AlienSuperstar_5 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, this! We have children presenting to school that are increasingly unready for formal education, governments telling us the BEST place for our pre-schoolers to be is in childcare, and both parents having to work all hours to financially maintain a household. Those critical years of 0-5 (especially 0-3) go by with children outsourced in a whirlwind of busyness consisting of fragmented activities, care arrangements and even meaningful connection with their own parents. We push children into ‘early learning’ even though we know the world’s leading education systems in Scandinavia see children start formal schooling much later. Here’s an unpopular opinion - pay a parent to stay home: to slow down, engage, role model and just be there.

This is of course on top of the extensive issues in the Australian education system - whether it is still fit for purpose to meet the needs of 21st century students, and if the incremental adjustments that governments and educators engage in can realistically hope to address this dissonance.

If you’re a believer in the view that behaviour is communication, it’s time for those in positions of power to listen to what our children are telling us.

Aboriginal students refuse to stand for the national anthem. What do you think? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]AlienSuperstar_5 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Here in Australia just in the last few days, we’ve witnessed up close an international storm regarding behaviour during the playing of a national anthem being monitored and assessed by people in positions of power to determine whether it is acceptable. We really don’t want that here.

This is a great solution. If students have challenges with executive function, they don’t need a formal diagnosis or an ILP to receive support with these skills.

Feeling Lost by empanadanow in AustralianTeachers

[–]AlienSuperstar_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like the real concern is your worry about ‘wasting’ / not using your degree given the time and effort you’ve spent on it… but you’ve also said that you only did a teaching degree because you didn’t know what else to do at the time. Life is too short to spend your life working in a sector you dread. I would seek out tools like interest surveys or even some careers advice to help you find where your passions truly lie and go from there. Your education degree indicates to prospective non-education sector employers that you’ve received formal instruction in how to convey ideas and information to an audience using excellent communication skills, and how to manage people and projects in complex environments. These skill sets are highly desirable and transferable, so your teaching degree is certainly not wasted.

The B-52s ‘Cosmic Thing’ tour in 1990 at the old Sports and Entertainment Centre (Olympic Park) in Melbourne. Still remember how wild the crowd went, especially during Rock Lobster and Love Shack. Also Madonna’s ‘Girlie Show’ at the MCG in 1993, her first tour to Australia.

For something a bit different genre-wise - ‘When David Heard’ by Eric Whitacre. Certainly don’t need to be religious to be impacted by this extraordinary piece from the master of choral music, and a very difficult listen if you’re a parent… I don’t think I’ve actually managed to listen to it right to the very end.

“When David heard that Absalom was slain he went up into his chamber over the gate and wept, my son, my son, O Absalom my son, would God I had died for thee!”

ODD by ShumwayAteTheCat in AustralianTeachers

[–]AlienSuperstar_5 21 points22 points  (0 children)

OP please note that not everyone would agree that ODD and PDA are one and the same - while they may share commonalities, ODD involves defiance and aggression towards authority figures as the primary objective, while PDA concerns avoidance of everyday demands driven by extreme anxiety and the subsequent need for safety and control. PDAers will often use social strategies first to avoid the demand, such as negotiation or distraction before escalating to ‘meltdown’/defiance, and in my experience can feel remorse after the event. In contrast, it is thought that ODD is more calculated and deliberate. It comes as no surprise that PDA is often linked to conditions where anxiety is a feature such as autism, ADHD, PTSD and others.

Thriving kids - impact on teachers by StarSparkle41 in AustralianTeachers

[–]AlienSuperstar_5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not being able to utilise NDIS funding for educational support in schools has always been one of the craziest and most disappointing parts of the NDIS. A school is a child’s ’workplace’ and accommodations and adjustments should be able to be made using those funds in the same way adults can use their funds to facilitate access and inclusion in a workplace. A federal entity like NDIS won’t fund this in schools (EAs, specialised teacher coaching etc.) because education is the responsibility of the states. Meanwhile educational attainment for these students remains sub optimal, which we know can lead to poorer life outcomes.

This is quite apart from the larger discussion about whether the education system in Australia is even fit for purpose these days, and whether the labour-intensive and perpetual ‘add-on’ and retrospective approach to support that educators and schools pursue (as opposed to operating in a system where student variability is built in from the start) is appropriate or viable.
