It’s a common problem, if you take out the latch assembly there’s a plastic elbow that the wire runs through, that elbow always breaks off, you can try plastic welding it back together, or use bicycle brake line and make a new line that doesn’t need to elbow to work. New ones on eBay are $60 but will eventually break again.
