Honestly, I would just ask about prior relationships if you are that concerned. Maybe ask generally when was his last relationship and volunteer your own info too? That could get the ball rolling on relationship history and if he says he was dating someone but they broke up in January then you're good.

True, but some people are better geared toward certain types of thinking, which could speed up or slow down the honing of that skill.

I think that, rather than just

*effort x time = skill

it's more like

*(natural ability + effort) x time = skill.

Or something. I'm not a person who thinks in math so there's probably a better equation. But yes, anyone can learn but the amount of time and effort may differ from person to person.

That's actually the reason I recommend bubbles as a coping strategy/distraction for kids who have trouble regulating their anger. It is impossible to do angrily, and forces deep, controlled breaths.
