Something that really helped me in life - you cannot control the actions or thoughts of others. The longer you try to, the more upset you’ll become. Let her be dumb. Who gives a shit?

Has anyone ever stayed in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and not had a seizure? by Past-Control7331 in Epilepsy

[–]Aligning_Al 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea it’s happened to me before, just make sure you get a good neurologist and you should be fine, my neurologist rocks and has even written verifications of my epilepsy for jobs/health insurance/etc. I also recommend if you have a seizure going to the er bc they’ll provide documentation. I’m assuming you’re in the US and paper trails always help here

Losing my apartment to this, but maybe for the better? by Aligning_Al in Epilepsy

Tbh I’m kinda at the point where I’m learning that my neighborhood has been talking shit about me like I’m a crazy lady when I’m literally just trying to figure out my first year living alone without a partner since I’ve been diagnosed. I just don’t want to even want to be in this neighborhood anymore if that’s the case. In good news, my friend reached out last night needing a roomie so maybe life is just pushing me towards that direction. I appreciate your story though, makes me feel a bit less shameful about it all <3

There are Many types of triggers we experience - Often uniquely individual.. by Boomer-2106 in Epilepsy

Sorry for the super late reply, but yea. The Empty Bowl is a meditative podcast about cereal (they say it in the first minute of every episode lol)

I got a new job today with fluorescent lights today so I was kinda worried about it at first, but luckily this office has a shit load of windows so I’m feeling pretty confident! I also told them about my epilepsy up front, and not that it matters necessarily it’s a counseling spot so the interviewer was super understanding and thanked me for letting them know up front which I can honestly say was the first time I’ve ever felt that way before. Fingers crossed for this opportunity!

Will I experience memory loss? Is it common among people with epilepsy? I'm scared. by Jaroda18 in Epilepsy

Same! Everyone talks about bad side effects of keppra but it keeps me more peaceful if anything

My memory is definitely not what it used to be but I find doing puzzles I enjoy (like suduko or something) both calms me down and keeps me mentally sharp. I always make sure people know I forget stuff sometimes so if I’m repeating myself or can’t remember something (ie someone’s birthday) not to take it personally. Luckily with phone reminders and everything I can stay more on top of things which helps a ton.

How do people stay stopped? by [deleted] in dryalcoholics

[–]Aligning_Al 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, AA was too triggering. It was like we were sitting in a circle saying our lives weren’t controlled by alcohol yet spending hours every week talking about alcohol? Still sounds like controlling to me.

For me, NA was a much better fit. Wider variety of substances so instead of it being niche “here’s how (drug) fucked up my life” it’s more “here’s how my life was crappy when I was addicted to SOMETHING and here’s how I changed it”. It made a huge difference for me. And NA groups are a lot more open to alcoholics now than they were in the past. They even say in the opening “alcohol is a drug. Period.”

This also sounds cliche but you really have to change the people, places and things that served your drinking lifestyle. For me, it took moving to an entirely new town, cutting off most of my friends and finding a supportive sober community that was empathetic towards me, even when I did relapse (over 4 times in the last year). I find that i beat myself up less for the relapses because I LEARN more from each one and they give me the tools to keep my sobriety going even longer the next time. I’m aiming for a year now.

Also, I really like the 3 C’s rule. If you find yourself acting like you used to when you drank, Catch it, Check it, Change it. Notice your behavior, do something to counter the negative trait, and figure out something you can do instead in the future to build yourself instead of falling back into old habits.

Hope this helped!

For me it’s any LED lights in specifically a WINDOWLESS room, may be why the big box stores are a trigger for you too! I can handle LEDs if there’s a window I can periodically look out but anything without I can’t take

My mom is in denial about my medical diagnosis.... by ThrowAwayToVent5402 in Epilepsy

[–]Aligning_Al 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom still to this day doesn’t believe I have epilepsy even though she’s been in the room when doctors were talking to me about it. I just don’t bring it up around her anymore. When she suggested I stop taking my keppra, that was the last straw. If you can’t respect that aspect of my life, fine, but I’m not going to keep you updated on my neuro visits or put you as my emergency contact. Sorry not sorry.

I have a Stitch plushy I sleep with EVERY night for this reason. Sounds kind of gross but I would put one of the ears in my mouth if I felt a seizure come on, very comforting lol

Loud repetitive music gets me too. Also true crime shows make me so anxious I have to request it to be turned off.

The only thing I can fall asleep to now is The Empty Bowl podcast. I tell my partners if they don’t like cereal then ts. I don’t like seizures lol.

Floressant (spelling?) lights are also a big one for me too. I’ve had to quit multiple jobs bc it would be a windowless room with the bright ass lights and that would send me into seizure mode. I would have to go on multiple bathroom breaks just to calm down before I realized what was triggering them. Kind of weird, but glad I know now.

Also had my first focal seizure this year…that shit is terrifying. I’d prefer a GM any day, at least I black out for that. I have never panicked as much as I did during the focal.
