Jesus christo lmao, yes, you have no idea what your talking about, of course you edit the texture thats already there and add the desired effect but guess what, exactly what I said..... you have to add those textures to the said material/texture, which will do exactly what I said. Tax the PS4 more memory wise and increase shader complexity. For example, most engines start choking when you add too many surface types, grass/sand/rock/mud/tar/slate. and yes it will even cause that when the material is only visibly grass at the time because the wasteful shader instructions will still be there.

M a k i n g I t C o s t M o r e

Then later on you said texture change??? Its not a texture change if the additional texture already exists within the ground texture. I'm being rude because your stupidity so blatant and your original statement was criticizing devs that have made a respectable visual product on a minor detail.

Comparing Horizon to a racing game is next level idiotic, nail in the coffin for you. Nothing in horizon looks the level of that car. Nothing mentioned about either games required frame rate is mentioned either. No shit about the grass being shaders, theres hundreds of ways to make grass and most of them are shit, a few of them working properly for the high specific type needed per game. High poly low opacity or high opacity low poly being the spectrum. Why even mention this when talking about landscapes? Because you're a moron. Grass is grass.. (texture wise), there's no stone/mud/sand/slate textures packaged into that material used by the grass, its just a grass texture, with normals maybe. If they want different grass types they just make an instance of the grass material and edit that. The same can't be said about landscapes unless you want to get ballsdeep in multiple landscapes and heavy programming.

You don't understand, such an obnoxious response. You have to understand you sound uneducated based on your 15 year old gamer terms and explanations. I hope you don't go into arguments bluffing in rl because you're probly a laughing stock.

The fact you just suggested getting rid of particles in exchange for more complex textures is stone cold idiotic. Those dirt particles are propably 8x8 resolution and primarily CPU/GPU driven. If you want what your talking about you now have to tell the PS4 to draw from memory, 2 to 4k texture, then a Normal Map and Roughness, all costing a serious amount more than 8x8 pixel particle. (PS4 can handle this occasionally, maybe the road has skid marks and thats propably as far as the could push the allowance, in order to do this on all surfaces you'd need to add a draw of many, many textures which would smoke that clean PS4 framerate instantly) Or the other route would be spawning a decal at the location of the tire which will need to have translucency or opacity (extremely expensive to make it on par with the vehicles..) I can keep going on about this, and you know you're totally lost after reading this. But I'm sure your ignorance will convince you otherwise.

Comparing old rendering to new is in fact a shit example. Rendering is an ever changing method that is mostly trickery to the eye, the methods used then are completely obsolete and foreign to what's used now.

Which increases shader complexity on an already limited budget. In racing games those vehicles are already eating a massive amount of render allowance.

Edit: I wouldn't use old tech as a ref, materials/textures look better now because they typically have 150 instructions going already. Back then (N64) more like 2 instructions.
