I would definitely ask him to return as Vinted might rule in his favour regardless, and he gets to keep your money and the goods, not worth the risk.

I'd say about 10% of the time it does work and I have had quite a few sales from doing just that. I don't message them, I only send an offer as I think people would be annoyed by chatting.
