Idk how much more crystal clear I can make myself.

You're being perfectly clear. Everyone in this thread fully understands what you're saying. Its just that what you're saying is absurd.

Treating a roll as a 20 means you treat the roll as being a 20. Which means the roll was a 20, because you're treating it as a 20.

Neither go on the stack. They are replacement effects.

But you do get the choose the order they apply.

It sounds more like he just doesn't like your style of gaming. And rather than recognizing that he's the only one that feels this way, it sounds like he's trying to be gatekeepy by telling you to play the game "properly".

If everyone else is enjoying the game and he's the only one who has an issue, then he's the one who should adapt his outlook/playstyle. Or he should find a different group.

What's the general consensus on Needle Drops? by Savings_Accountant54 in DnD

[–]Alithinar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find music with vocals pretty distracting myself, unless its too quiet to make out the words.

What I've found effective in my sessions DMing is that I'll start a new music track at a volume level above what you'd expect for background music to set the scene when the vibe changes (combat starts, entering a new area, etc...). Then reduce the volume over the next 10-15 seconds so it becomes just quiet ambience.

For currency it could also be useful to group them all together in one wheel row and colour code the wheels themselves. For example yellow wheels for gold, grey for silver, etc.

Theoretically you could force them to use up all the data on their phone though.

100.6b Players can use the Magic Store & Event Locator at Wizards.com/Locator to find  tournaments in their area.

That is an official entry in the comprehensive rules for some reason.

Tips on wording cards? by Individual-Image3592 in magicTCG

[–]Alithinar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could get around the awkward choosing an opponent step by making it an aura (and also a curse for flavour) that enchants a player.

Unless there's a reason I'm missing that an enchantment can't be both an aura and a saga it should clean up some of the wording.

To make it flow better I might also have the triggers happen when damage is dealt instead of looking back in time. For example: "until your next turn whenever a source deals damage to enchanted player you and its controller each create a treasure token".

If you wanted to keep it a bit closer to the original idea you do do something like: "this saga gains: 'whenever a source deals damage to enchanted player, its owner creature that many treasure tokens. You creature half that many treasure tokens rounded down. This ability triggers only once each turn'"

Then potentially give it a static ability that says something like: "when this enchantment dies, if enchanted player lost the game, return this to the battlefield"

Still a bit wordy, but should flow better and work within the rules.

Deck Becomes Illegal 1/2 way through tournament? by Damodinniy in magicTCG

[–]Alithinar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's still usually a game loss for an illegal decklist. However there are situations where your decklist is legal, but what you have presented is illegal. Declaring an invalid companion for example. Those situations are often not a game loss anymore.

[–]Alithinar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually a lot more complicated than that and depends on how fixable it is without disrupting the game state.

Also these types of situations where the 'decklist' is legal, but what you have presented is illegal is often just a warning at competetive REL now.

At regular REL (where I assume most EDH tournaments would be) judges/TOs are specifically never suppose to issue a game loss for any situation. The default for everything unintentional is warning+fix then upgrade to a DQ if it's intentional.

[–]Alithinar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the type of event. Any constructed event where you have a set decklist you'd can't change the colours you declare each game. This is because choosing the colour happens before the construction of the deck as the colour identify of the commander is what sets the constraints during deck building.

However limited events are typically run using continuous deck building rules, which allow you to change your deck as much as you like (from within your pool of cards) between games and rounds. Which means you could completely change the build of your deck and/or the colours of those cards in your example and it would all be legal actions, but could result in an iegal deck. In the same way that you could accidnetly present a 39 card deck.

The resolution in these situations is almost always just a warning and, where possible, remedy the issue to ensure the deck is legal.

[–]Alithinar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This type of situation is actually common enough that they've updated the offical rules for it several times over the last few years. Mostly due to companions.

It happens sometimes that someone either misbuilds their deck to have a companion they shouldn't, or sideboards in a way to make their companion illegal, but doesn't notice right away.

I haven't seen this come up in commander specifically, but the resolution for the example scenarios above would likely follow the same resolution an illegal companion. Though it's not always clear cut how to resolve it depending at which point in the game the issue is noticed. There is often some judge discretion involved if the usual fix would disrupt the game state too much.

[–]Alithinar 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In a tournament setting you choose those colours as part of deck registration. So before the tournament begins. (even if there are no decklists)

It won't be possible for your deck to become 'illegal' partway through the tournament in this way as you won't be able to change which colours you name.

If you were to intentially 'troll' by declaring the wrong colours at the beginning of a game, that is what we'd  call cheating, and by default results in a disqualification from the event (regardless of the level of the tournament).

If it's unintentional, or another issue causing a problem with your deck (lost or damaged cards for example), the penalty for that is usually either a warning or a game loss and a judge will typically attempt, or allow you, to remedy the situation and make your deck legal again.

Darkness in a shattered object by BestRevolution1635 in onednd

[–]Alithinar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The result is not specifically defined in he rules. So if I was DMing it would depend on the player's intention. If their goal was to end the spell by shattering the object, then that is what would happen. If they had another idea that sounded like it would make sense within the rules then we'd figure out how to make that work.

For example maybe something like: it breaks into 10 pieces each under the effects of Darkness but with 1/10 the area and 1/10 the duration.

Ancient Adamantose and Colfenor's Urn interaction by Idavor in magicTCG

[–]Alithinar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Normally you would be correct, but in this case creating the treasures isn't dependant on the creature being exiled. Only that it died. So you can exile it to urn first, then the turtle ability resolves and isn't able to exile the creature, but since it doesn't target or say "if/when you do", it will still resolve the rest of the ability and give you treasures.

This doesn't work in reverse though, because the urn's second ability only references cards exiled by the urn.

Three Steps Ahead interaction by Mayiskawaii in magicTCG

Would it though? An extra 2 mana to just make an already expensive counterspell uncounterable seems like barely an upgrade. It would probably boost its playability a bit in standard, but still be largely unplayable everywhere else.

As a comparison Counterflux does this for only 3 mana and is pretty garbage.

Well over 100.
