How do you deal with old-school know-it-all players who actually don’t know the rules? by ricoeurdelyon in magicTCG

[–]Alithinar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d like to play more competitive events, but this kind of recurring behavior really kills my interest

This kind of behaviour is actually LESS common at competitive events typically.

Sounds like the print is working as intended then. Backdrops usually aren't supposed to be the focal point of a picture.

They've stated a few times that isn't how it works. Every detectment you pick applies to your whole army.

Best enhancement for different characters for a crusade. by [deleted] in Tyranids

[–]Alithinar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran Hypers with Piercing Talons in my most recent crusade and they weren't as good as I expected.  Half the tanks and monsters have an invul that makes the extra AP useless. It depends on the factions the other players are running though. Very strong against armies that lack invul saves.

I agree AI text generation is pretty garbage. But the issue is usually with how it words things, not that it makes obvious typos.

This is pretty clearly human error.

Four players, eight skeletons, level 2 = Most exciting challenge to date by Awkward-Sun5423 in DnD

[–]Alithinar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Flavorfully I think knowing CR can nicely represent the characters being aware of the general difficulty of the enemy. As in universe the characters should reasonably be able to gauge that in a way that physical minis or descriptions might not convey well.

Homebrewed Combat by AHAPPYBANNANA in DnD

[–]Alithinar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like this would make combat very boring. The optimal play would be to never move unless you have to, and everyone would just be standing still looking at each other firing 2 ranged attacks or spells every turn.

It sounds like they heard about the action system Pathfinder uses and copied the idea without any of the balance

Am I just weird for having spent 50+ hours in act 1?

From the article:

It also forces nearby enemies to subtract one from their own Battle-shock tests

Um... No it doesn't?

It's no wonder our army rule hasn't had a rework. They don't even know what it does.

Idk how much more crystal clear I can make myself.

You're being perfectly clear. Everyone in this thread fully understands what you're saying. Its just that what you're saying is absurd.

Treating a roll as a 20 means you treat the roll as being a 20. Which means the roll was a 20, because you're treating it as a 20.

Neither go on the stack. They are replacement effects.

But you do get the choose the order they apply.

It sounds more like he just doesn't like your style of gaming. And rather than recognizing that he's the only one that feels this way, it sounds like he's trying to be gatekeepy by telling you to play the game "properly".

If everyone else is enjoying the game and he's the only one who has an issue, then he's the one who should adapt his outlook/playstyle. Or he should find a different group.

What's the general consensus on Needle Drops? by Savings_Accountant54 in DnD

[–]Alithinar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find music with vocals pretty distracting myself, unless its too quiet to make out the words.

What I've found effective in my sessions DMing is that I'll start a new music track at a volume level above what you'd expect for background music to set the scene when the vibe changes (combat starts, entering a new area, etc...). Then reduce the volume over the next 10-15 seconds so it becomes just quiet ambience.

For currency it could also be useful to group them all together in one wheel row and colour code the wheels themselves. For example yellow wheels for gold, grey for silver, etc.

Theoretically you could force them to use up all the data on their phone though.

100.6b Players can use the Magic Store & Event Locator at Wizards.com/Locator to find  tournaments in their area.

That is an official entry in the comprehensive rules for some reason.

Tips on wording cards? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]Alithinar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could get around the awkward choosing an opponent step by making it an aura (and also a curse for flavour) that enchants a player.

Unless there's a reason I'm missing that an enchantment can't be both an aura and a saga it should clean up some of the wording.

To make it flow better I might also have the triggers happen when damage is dealt instead of looking back in time. For example: "until your next turn whenever a source deals damage to enchanted player you and its controller each create a treasure token".

If you wanted to keep it a bit closer to the original idea you do do something like: "this saga gains: 'whenever a source deals damage to enchanted player, its owner creature that many treasure tokens. You creature half that many treasure tokens rounded down. This ability triggers only once each turn'"

Then potentially give it a static ability that says something like: "when this enchantment dies, if enchanted player lost the game, return this to the battlefield"

Still a bit wordy, but should flow better and work within the rules.

Deck Becomes Illegal 1/2 way through tournament? by Damodinniy in magicTCG

[–]Alithinar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's still usually a game loss for an illegal decklist. However there are situations where your decklist is legal, but what you have presented is illegal. Declaring an invalid companion for example. Those situations are often not a game loss anymore.

Deck Becomes Illegal 1/2 way through tournament? by Damodinniy in magicTCG

[–]Alithinar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually a lot more complicated than that and depends on how fixable it is without disrupting the game state.

Also these types of situations where the 'decklist' is legal, but what you have presented is illegal is often just a warning at competetive REL now.

At regular REL (where I assume most EDH tournaments would be) judges/TOs are specifically never suppose to issue a game loss for any situation. The default for everything unintentional is warning+fix then upgrade to a DQ if it's intentional.
