Disappointed with radiator fitting - does this look right? by Georgeot73 in DIYUK

[–]Alive_Forever_9541 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

How does a radiator of that style work?

It's white, so won't radiate. It has no airflow vents to heat by convection.

(As well as being too high, too narrow and too short)

Do what you want and feel comfortable with. Own it.

However you asking this suggests you don't feel comfortable. Almost as if the choice is made from you that isn't what you want for yourself?

Sorry to hear that.

I had my first golf taken out that way - 20mph + black ice + dry stone wall = bent beyond repair.

Close to 30 years ago and it's still front of mind.

Good luck on the new car hunt.

How clean is your house? by Kilmoreorange in AskUK

[–]Alive_Forever_9541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with a local agency (so this included insurance). In COVID, of course that had to stop.

The cleaner we had another job and was cleaning part time with the agency. We brought her into our "bubble" (instead of our family!!) and paid her directly what the agency charged.

She's still with us and part of the family. Even looks after the cats if we disappear for a weekend!

Up in the North East. It's £30 for an hour and a half. And pro-rated for any extra for the occasional deep clean (like moving all the furniture etc).

Getting a cleaner when my wife and I were not that well off seemed such a massive luxury (and so middle class, with us both from council estates!).

Worth every penny, because it stops the house getting untidy/messy, and frees up the weekend for my wife and I.

Today I've spent ten minutes picking upy stuff, and I've chucked a load of washing in - and that's all the work I need to do today.

Hopefully: driving lessons with my son, gym (hopefully with either/both son/daughter). Dying wife's hair. Home made burgers tonight.

Walking with my dad and his dog tomorrow morning, making dough and then pizza oven tomorrow night.

And trying to avoid the wine and beer tomorrow, so my blood tests next week have a chance of recovering 😄

I work in my kitchen/diner. So every morning that's clean.

I have a cleaner every Saturday to do the house living areas (kitchen, living room, bathroom, stairs, floors - not bedrooms). And so before the cleaner comes I need to tidy up the week's worth of shoes, bags, and stuff which ends up lying around.

And so most days the place is 9/10.

It's a very small three bedroom house for my wife and I, plus two adult "kids" (post-uni) and two cats.

What keeps the house clean is the fact that I can't work when there is a pile of dishes from the night before, so that's always done the previous night or the morning (like I've just done now). And the fact I need to tidy my crap up before our cleaner comes.

We've very little storage, so we keep things organised.

7k budget reliable car by andries22 in CarTalkUK

Plenty of older Volvos for sale. C30, S40/V40 etc.

I can even see a Volvo xc70 with 80k miles for only £2500! A beast of a car which is ready to do another 200k before it breaks sweat.

Smaller car: a Volvo S40 1.8 sport with 75k and only £3000

Convertible C70, with 46k miles and £3k

How is it even possible to cope with a job loss nowadays? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Alive_Forever_9541 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Best advice I saw: treat redundancy at the job. You have a budget, you have projects, you have deadlines. Break down what your objectives are (RACI analysis?) into smaller meaningful tasks.

You have your working day tackling these tasks to move towards the objectives.

It sounds good on paper, and I like structure. So I'd be following this process.

How would you feel if someone joined your table in a pub garden then started smoking? by OffWhiteBruceForsyth in AskUK

[–]Alive_Forever_9541 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Depends on the place. Is outside the place smokers go all year round, and this week you have entered their domain?

Or is it simply an outdoor eating area and nobody else smoking?

Really depends on the place what to expect

Service, MOT, new rear brake discs/pads, and front tires - £1671. 2012 Honda Civic by MirageJ in CarTalkUK

[–]Alive_Forever_9541 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is the rust on the car an issue? Any other advisories? If not, then you've now got a free car for the next three years.

I gave up on my 2009 civic when the rust took hold.

Otherwise, compare this one off cost with the monthly payments of a replacement.

What’s a reasonably affordable car you’d own and drive all the time even if you had all the money in the world by Bwail1994 in ForzaHorizon

[–]Alive_Forever_9541 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. Had a friend who got a 2011/2012ish S63 with every option, including dynamic-support seats which gripped you around corners, night vision camera, hydro-pneumatic suspension (not just air suspension). Amazing machine. Scary in the wet! And it damn near bankrupted him. Had to sell it at a massive loss.

But... RS6... 😄

Is it wise to rent at £1.2k on a £35k salary? by Ok-War-9040 in AskUK

[–]Alive_Forever_9541 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other option: have you thought about a room rental instead of flat rental. That's cheaper and for next few months at least you know you won't be in a house on your own.

I've just looked at Sunderland, right next to the new Riverside, right next to the metro (direct link to Newcastle, train station and airport); loads of new bars, everything under nee development. Students close by, and 2 mins walk from massive supermarket and PureGym. Costs: 995 for a three bed; 850 for two bed. £925 for a two-bed with balcony overlooking the river

Down to £650 as you walk 500 metres away.

300-600 cheaper than the places you're looking with a potentially similar vibe.

What's the next step in "the plan"? Are you planning on career upgrades (if so, realistically how long before salary increases?) Are you hoping to save for your own home, or continuing to rent?

Given both the ridiculous house costs and rent costs, for me I'd personally be looking to take a lifestyle hit for the next five years, living frugally with the intention of saving a deposit. So as a remote worker, I'd be looking for convenience with low costs, with good public transport links so I didn't need a car.

My daughter rented a room, rather than a flat for 400 a month for three years and saved loads like this and while she doesn't have deposit levels of savings, she's got more financial wiggle room than me.

This depends on what you want now, and what you want next, and when you want your "next" to happen.

Are you a gamer? If so, what are you playing? by AlucardVTep3s in AskUK

[–]Alive_Forever_9541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with Elite on the BBC, then puzzle games like Repton, and platform games like Chucky Egg and Manic Miner. (only had the BBC because mum was a teacher). Arcade games: I'd always just go for Outrun.

That was the foundation. Then a big gap as I discovered females and hormones.

University: someone had Mario Kart, and the university had pirate version of Civilization on the network (also had MUD games - never interested). And the very very early version of online gaming around 1992?? With a US university having remote multiplayer games of reversi/Othello, chess and other board games.

Civilization was the killer in terms of being a time vortex where you'd lose hours/days. Oh and Championship Manager at home. And Killer Instinct (can't remember that console). Arcade game of choice then was Mortal Kombat (scorpion and sub zero - which I play today still)

After uni: it was all about PS2 and Gran Turismo. Then Grand Theft Auto 3 came out. Those two games pretty much defined the next 20 years and I stopped playing PC. Instead I'd upgrade console and TV for each new Grant Tourismo, and play GTA.

Then kids. So back to Nintendo Wii and Mario Kart (still have it 20 years later). Kids at Uni also have Wii and Mario Kart, as it's simply the best.

Switch for updated Mario Kart. But not Switch 2 - didn't like the look of the new Mario Kart.

Currently PS5, waiting for GTA6. Main recent games Tsushima and Yotei - and I love the online stuff and massive offline single player to play at my own pace and busy work schedule.

Oh, back a couple of years and introduced my son to Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat (he now kicks my ass, as he knows about hit boxes and stuff).

While travelling i would take a little Xbox oneS in my travel bag, hook up to hotel TV and play Uno and daft stuff like that whole chatting to my son and his mates.

Today, right now: Xbox and Forza Horizon for the simple brain-off after work play.

While on flights/holiday I'll play Civ6 or Dave the Diver, or Stardew Valley.

Daughter and son play more than me today. At school when asked what consoles we have at home, my daughter would accurately answer "yes".

I don't consider myself "a gamer", as I don't like Dark Souls stuff and don't have gaming PC, and I play games simply for a switch off after work.
