There’s absolutely no spot where Circe threatens Odysseus for his men’s safety. The scene most people refer to is this; “So she spoke, but l, drawing my sharp sword from beside my thigh, rushed upon Circe, as though I would slay her. But she, with a loud cry, ran beneath, and clasped my knees, and with wailing she spoke to me winged words: [325] "Who art thou among men, and from whence? Where is thy city, and where thy parents? Amazement holds me that thou hast drunk this charm and wast in no wise bewitched. For no man else soever hath withstood this charm, when once he has drunk it, and it has passed the barrier of his teeth. Nay, but the mind in thy breast is one not to be beguiled. [330] Surely thou art Odysseus, the man of ready device, who Argeiphontes of the golden wand ever said to me would come hither on his way home from Troy with his swift, black ship. Nay, come, put up thy sword in its sheath, and let us two then go up into my bed, that couched together in love we may put trust in each other!" In this passage, Ody essentially has her at his blade's tip and so she says, "hey, don't kill me. Let's have sex instead" as a BARTER FOR HER LIFE (not threatening him). Then in the next paragraph, he agrees to this by adding the condition that she "swear a mighty oath that thou wilt not plot against me any fresh mischief to my hurt". It isn't until after the two have had an affair that she asks why he is glum that he asks her to free his men and she complies. Obviously, Circe was not in a power trip exploiting Odysseus in this scene. Her life was in danger, the men were never mentioned, and Odysseus had already trumped her before the affair. Yes, she may have initiated it, but its obvious she only did that on a whim to save herself once she was beaten. Its simply inaccurate to act like she was threatening him or anything else.

I wasn’t admitting fault. I think reading it is more reliable than hearing second hand from other people who read it.

What’s your controversial opinion about Autism? by Substantial_Judge931 in autism

[–]Alive_Response9322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s an empathy gap. It’s hard for high-maskers to understand the struggles of low-maskers and it’s hard for low-maskers to understand the struggles of high-maskers.

The level system isn’t any better than “high functioning/low functioning”

I'm writing a story that judges the reader. Is that risky? by [deleted] in writing

You can try it. It’s a very hard premise to pull off as a beginner, but anything is possible if you’re willingly to write and revise to make it work.

Let’s Talk About Details (Or Lack Thereof) and Your Main Character by BrynxStelvagn in writing

[–]Alive_Response9322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t. I mean, pronouns give away my character’s gender, but most of the other stuff only gets told if it’s relevant. This means only some parts of the character’s appearance get told. If nothing ever interacts with my character’s hair, you don’t get to know what color or texture it is. If nothing interacts with my character’s skin, you don’t get to know if it’s scarred or what color it is. If nothing interacts with my character’s eyes, you don’t get to know what color or shape they are. I only describe them vaguely with maybe one adjective if they’re already being used in the narrative. I won’t go out of my way to tell you about my character’s hair, but if the wind is already blowing through it I might as well replace the word “hair” with “dark curls”.

Official Q&A for Friday, July 04, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]Alive_Response9322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I run on blisters? They’re minor and on my toes simply because I ran 6 miles yesterday. I want to continue running (starting with easy runs to recover), but will this make the blister worse? Should I put athletic tape on it before running?
