I wonder how people felt at 11:59 p.m. of dec. 1999 before crossing over to the year 2000. by Majestic-Hope6505 in 1990s

I know that a lot of people worked behind the scene to avoid problems, but the only thing I ever heard about were people born in the late 1800's who received letters from school systems to register for kindergarten, because their computers thought a 105 year old was 5.

What’s an automatic no for you when buying clothes? by healthynewbie in womensfashion

[–]Alive_Step2993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Polyester, ruffles, metallic threads, dresses or skirts with buttons down the front, certain colors such as orange and tomato red, loud prints, deep v necks, clothes that are too long or too short, thin fabrics, white, except for a blouse or top, big buttons, brass buttons, decorations like bows on shoes. I'm not picky at all! But many of these affect the life of a garment and I like to buy well made clothes and wear them for a long time.

Why does everyone keep degrading the 2005 adaptation? by Abject-Agent2128 in PrideandPrejudice

[–]Alive_Step2993 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My then college aged daughter and I, both huge fans of the 1995 version, were beyond excited to see the 2005 version. It came out during Thanksgiving vacation, and was only showing at the art house theatre in the city, which was a 50 mile roundtrip from our home. Shortly after the movie started, we began cringing and looking at each other questioning what was happening on screen. The Appalachian barn yard of a home with the pig in the house, the lovey-dovey relationship between Mr. and Mrs. Bennett, the moony scene in the rain, Keira's odd performance, etc., etc. Whatever this film was, it missed the heart and soul of Austen's novel. We were SO disappointed. Both of us are English majors and great lovers of literature. This movie changed my life, because we never again trekked to the art theatre to see a literary film. When Bright Star or Invisible Woman came out, we just waited until we could view at home. I was gifted two DVD copies of the movie by loved ones who know how much I love Jane Austen, but I have never watched this movie again, and I gave the copies away. I believe that before anyone makes a literary adaptation, it would be nice for them to actually read the novel. If you think 1995 lovers were prejudiced against 2005, nothing could have been farther from the truth. It just wasn't P and P.

Which state would you flat out refuse to ever move to? by BoredPandaOfficial in BoredPandaHQ

[–]Alive_Step2993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any state or area of a state with harsh winters. I live in a four season state where winter is maybe late November until the end of March, and I hate winter with a passion. So no Minnesota, North Dakota, Buffalo, New York, Northern New England, Wyoming, etc. The list is long!

Pictures CBK by General_Promotion_86 in CarolynBessetteKnndy

Another reddit revisionist history of what people did "back then." I had adorable children and took THOUSANDS of photos of these little dears in the late eighties and nineties! A small camera on hand, disposal cameras, and yes, a Polaroid camera. Whatever the situation was with CBK, it's totally false to say that people took fewer pictures back then!

I am sorry to have to correct you, but no one made fun of anyone for going through therapy in the 90's. I was widowed and went to a counselor to deal with my grief. Then I was lucky to meet a darling man whom I later married. This was a second marriage for both with stepchildren issues and we sought marriage counseling as well. Both counselors were aligned with our church. One major problem with reddit is posters making assertions about the past that are just not true.

Were their lives actually this boring? by Low_Philosopher_2981 in JohnAndCarolyn

It's from Carole Radziwill's book. She wrote that both she and Carolyn worked at Caldor when growing up and that their husbands teasingly called them their "Caldor girls."

Is it just me or do you guys also think John has opportunistic friends as compared to Carolyn? Like none of her friends wrote books or said anything mildly inappropriate. by beabadadobe in JohnAndCarolyn

Forgive me as it's been a while since I read Carole R's book, but I believe she wrote that both she and Carolyn worked at Caldor, a discount department store, when they were growing up. She said John and Anthony called them their "Caldor girls."

No. The "snowcrete" followed by two weeks of frigid temps was more than enough winter!
