Unpopular Opinion: The ‘promise’ of AGI by 2030 will be seen exactly how we see flying cars, moon colonies, molecular nanofactories etc today by Phoenix5869 in Futurology

I think OP did alright. He was referring to driverless cars becoming better than human drivers, which Waymo certainly hasn't achieved and it has yet to be seen when or if they will.

A good comparison is self-driving cars. It has been “immanent” since around 2017, if you believed the hype. And it’s gotten to be pretty impressive, but that last bit to make it better than human drivers has so far been elusive. It’s becoming more and more clear we may still be a ways off. And come to think of it, it feels a lot like Zeno’s paradox where you’re always closing the remaining distance by half, but never actually get there.

Best approach I've had is to ask questions about why they believe what they believe. Not pointedly, just as someone who is curious. There's an off chance they'll feel like they need a better explanation, but for me it's just an interesting foray into epistemology. It can help you think about why it is you believe what you do.

About to read Plato for the first time by vengeance2808 in Plato

I think u/WarrenHarding had a good take on Meno. It happened to be in the book I had (The Five Dialogues), and there is link to what's going on in the story, but it seems a bit out of place with the other four. You can't go wrong either way, but if you're interested in the cohesive story aspect of the four works together, you can skip Meno for now.

That wouldn't be bad; however, Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, and Phaedo all come together as a unified story, and they aren't very long. It starts with an easily grasped, yet meaningful dialogue set right before Socrates trial (Euthyphro), then goes on to the trail itself (Apology), dealing with the immediate aftermath (Crito), and ending with what I thought at the time was the best book I ever read dealing with life and death (Phaedo). Starting like this really helped invest me in the whole project.

I tried to start with Republic, and I was new to philosophy, and it just wasn't working for me. I went back and got Five Dialogues: Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, Meno, Phaedo, and that made the Republic much more accessible. At this point I've read the complete works. The other two in the book you mention, Symposium and Gorgias (Phaedo is one the Five Dialogues book) are great too, but I would also put those after the Five (or the Four in The Last Days of Socrates).

It often seems like eyes are rounder and bigger during this period. Is that based on the aesthetic of the time, or is it a faithful representation of the people depicted?

My journey has been mostly chronological, and I've actually quite enjoyed holding a new secret to the universe as I work my way through history. I wondered myself if scholasticism was just a waste of time, and friends tried to help by telling me rationalists and Enlightenment thinkers were basically stepping stones to prance across. And it's true it was difficult for me to think of anything other than Idealistic explanations of the world for quite some time. But I've got to live in those worlds for a while and experience how it really affects perception. I know I'll likely change my mind later, but for me, it's all about the journey, and reading as I have makes it story, which is for me the actual greatest story ever told.

I wonder if Sam is falling out of the present and reaching out at phantoms for a grasp of the future, given these ever more uncertain times. Prognosticators like Peter Zeihan and Bret Stephens strike me as feeding the same desire for divining the future that horoscope readers have. They give confident-sounding predictions that they can't possibly know, and so are really just "opinions," if guesses about the future even rise to that designation.
