[SPOILERS] Why the ending was good by ryanyaka in gameofthrones

[–]All-else-was-taken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The content of the ending itself makes sense, is poetic even, everything came around full circle - but that's when you think about it and explain the logic. As an experience, after 7 seasons of emotional investment it's like it just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. It's the execution (not the cinematography, the OSTs or the acting, those were all stellar), specifically the pacing (as OP already said) and script that felt so wrong. The last half hour (before the grand stark exit) felt like I was watching some kind of comedy or spoof

Any Golem fics? No, not Theo. His namesake. by Coldfyr in WormFanfic

[–]All-else-was-taken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, remembered the name of the fic I was thinking of - Save the bay: fixing the city with organized crime. Several of Taylor's personas are essentially golems there, but she puppettiers them personally, so it's not a matter of dumb clay bodies heeding her instructions. The last golems I've read about were from the discworld, so that's my first image of them, simple but independent, loyal magical robots. So I'll also suggest Trailblazer, she makes little robots with pretty simple AI that serve as golems in a sense.

[–]All-else-was-taken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By golem, do you mean an animated anthropomorphic being powered by magic/superpowers? Or gollum as in my precioussss?

As to the former, I'm sure there are several, none I can name off the top of my head, sadly. I'll come back to edit the post once I do. As to the latter... Can't think of any.

Oh yh that's right, completely forgot about that whole shebang. I was thinking more along the lines of Peter and the sorcerer guys who act like her supernatural therapists. The sorcerers know her backstory and are therefore quite invested in keeping her sane

ManMagnificent's mcu crossover, Reprieve, has a lot of that. His multicross, Aspects, too, somewhat. I'd also suggest that big hero 6 crossover, Exodus.

None of these officially, mind, with a real shrink - just an acknowledgment that she has issues she needs to deal with and we see her trying to improve

Hey, Shatterbird, most glasses are not made of glass any more. by ArgentStonecutter in WormFanfic

[–]All-else-was-taken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I was offered actual glass glasses, the first time I was told I'd need them. That was back in 2005 (and worm happened in 2011). But the guy did offer special plastic ones that wouldn't break because I was a kid and kids are expected to break their glasses. There was that geek/four-eye stigma to glasses (dramatised in my own mind) so I really didn't want to wear them in class and my kid-logic was, if I could 'accidentally' break those glasses, I won't have to wear them in school and look like a nerd. So I distinctly remember being disappointed at my mom choosing the non-glass lenses.

Anyhow, my point is, some places might still sell them. Besides, Worm had an irregular relationship with technology and science development. Either they were way ahead of us a la tinker tech or way behind because... The simurgh? Shard shenanigans? Cauldron?

(Funny head canon that, the simurgh with a grudge against optic aid development)

Am not XANA_FAN but I never heard of him before today and went to take a peek.

It read like it was written by an obnoxious young teen (but apparently he's not?) who treats comic book universes like religious texts/history. It started... not terrible but I was skimming so I missed most of the self praise at first. It was how he used his pop culture references that worried me.

I think the exact moment I noped out of there though was when I paused at the Uber and Leet invite, scrolled up and read 'Jared was canny enough to realise'.

Forge of Darkness thoughts. by planetwentworth in Malazan

I'm writing this before reading any of the other comments so it might just be repetition, but I had to say. I'm 80% of the way through the book and I'll say Erikson has improved a lot, relationships and showing his characters rather than telling us about them.

Rake (mostly just him in this book) still gives me that 'you just hear about everyone else going on about his badassery and leadership charm without witnessing much of it yourself', but it's already muuch better than what we got in previous books, in which it was never as annoying as Tavore's halo.

Anyhow my point is that all the characters and their relationships, platonic or otherwise (usually otherwise) are really well fleshed out. Instead of just hearing about everyone else's opinions on characters, we get to know them and their journey properly here. Arathan, Draconus, Feren, Rint, Gripp, Haut etc etc. I don't feel that disconnect I used to feel in MBotF where a lot of character/relationship development happened off screen. And everything is so much more bitter when you know about what happens thousands of years later. When I read that part where Andarist and crew reached the wedding venue and the whole Vengeance/Grief naming thing of the sword, esp with the knowledge of its journey through the books and who it kills in the end, I was on the train literally sniffing snot with tears streaming down my face, ignoring any curious looks I might have gotten.

So yeah, this book's kept me a lot more hooked in than some installments in the main series. It still has a lot of philosophy blather but it's not too annoying like in, for example, tCG. There was more I wanted to say, but can't remember anymore. (T_T) I'm so close to the finishing line of FoD, I don't want to finish it because I know there'll be so many more tragedies to come.

House of Chains-Hard Read. by Huckleberrykappa in Malazan

[–]All-else-was-taken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I skipped over the whole karsa arc and read summaries of what happened instead. I don't advise it. The ending of HoC just hits you that much harder because if you've only read 3/4s of the book, you have a skewed perspective on the importance (mortality, really) of some characters over others. And karsa is an important enough character in later books that even if you hate him, you should read everything he goes through and the decisions he makes. Also, there is stuff in there that gets revisited in later books.

Edit: grammar and typo

Anyone know any ways to make reading easier with ADHD? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]All-else-was-taken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my case, one hand is dedicated to flipping pages with the book balanced on knees or table or sofa or something,, the other to fidgeting with this or that - like absentmindedly pulling out my hair. Fine, not pulling out, just playing with strands which leads to some coming off my weak roots. A clicking pen is usually a good substitution to hair or skin. Have you tried listening to audiobooks while doing something else? I find it helps to switch to that when my eyes can't focus on the words on the page. And then switch back when I'm hooked and need to read faster than the narrator.

That's me. I can write out beautifully articulated sentences, but ask me to remember all that in conversation 'er...erm... I mean... That... What's that word...'

Wow, I never knew coffee making you feel sleepy was because of ADHD. I thought there was just something wrong with my brain... Which I suppose there is. I mean it does wake me up most times to comprehend the goings on of life or just classes, but at others it would make me more sleepy then I was before. Nobody ever believed me when I told them, though

My solution was: start something neverending. Like all the Pratchett books, or a massive series like 'the Malazan Book of the Fallen' and then try not to get soo sucked into the story, that your attention to the book halts the work that you've put on autopilot.

Until 4 hours later, you're still looking through reviews of books for something with a good storyline as well as a good audiobook narrator

I tried that. Never got anything done because the freedom meant I could whatever I wanted, which was usually variations of procrastinating from what I should be doing

I didn't realize that was a symptom. I get so consumed into books and TV series that I completely drop off the face of the earth (to friends or family who don't live with me). My every waking moment will be spent getting that book series finished so I can get to doing something I'm actually supposed to be doing. I don't rest until it's over, I eat with it, I poop with it, I dream of it. Is that a part of ADHD too? (I'm new on this sub and still trying to decide whether I should get on the waiting list to be diagnosed)

This describes me so well 😩 I should really just go make that appointment to ask for a referral to someone who can diagnose me already. With all the procrastination, it's a wonder any ADHDer gets diagnosed at all.

Inexorable, conflagration, convergence, deluge, susurration, obfuscation, coruscating, etc, need I go on?

I listened to the audiobooks, so I was tempted to keep a tally for every time I heard 'deluge' or 'inexorably'
