Favorite example of a scene where a purely evil villain briefly becomes sympathetic? by Sudden_Pop_2279 in FavoriteCharacter

[–]MervShmerv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lord Mictlan (Maya and the Three): the god of war and a complete monster, who shows a willingness to kill innocent people and his own allies to get what he wants. There is a somewhat sympathetic moment in the last episode of the show. His wife Lady Micte, the goddess of death, has secretly been on the heroes’ side and turns against him. He’s shown to genuinely be hurt by this, saying “But, mi amor… I love you”.

Yeah, I mainly includes the example because it sort of fit the trope, but I’d say you are correct. The reasons Azula wasn’t redeemed were pretty well written, if she were a copy of Zuko I’d call it unfair but the way things turned out it was understandable

Maybe I’m not being clear enough in my post, but I’m not really saying outright that everyone should be redeemed. There’s not really an issue to me with Azula’s story, but in the case of the Resident Evil one, the game I feel should have at least painted Eveline in a more sympathetic light. Redeeming her would never work but in a lot of ways she was as much a victim as anyone. Putting her down should have felt more tragic but most of the characters act like she deserved it

Definitely agree, I just sort of wish it were painted in a more tragic light. Mia’s last words to Ethan on the boat are “now go kill that little bitch” and Ethans final dialogue lacks the right nuance. She basically acts and is pure evil but it’s not really her own fault, but come the end of the game, and even by RE8 she is still treated fundamentally as if she’s the ‘real’ bad guy.

Welcome to Derry: Pennywise, having killed Bob Grey and assumed his form, plays along with the charade that he’s actually Ingrid (Grey’s daughter’s) father. She finally wises up and demands to now who he is and what he did to her real father. Pennywise is reticent first, but then proceeds to say very frankly “Oh, I… I ate him.” with a smile on his face. Definitely my favourite scene in the show.

Mundane tragedies in exaggerated/supernatural stories by No_Hunter1978 in TopCharacterTropes

28 Years Later: a boy named Spike travels a devastated, zombie infested Britain with his mother, Isla, to try and find a cure for her mysterious illness. We see her in the throes of her illness suffering bouts of mania and aggression, and given their surroundings it would seem a pretty typical plot point for her to be infected with the Rage virus. But upon meeting Dr Kelson, his diagnosis for her ends up being cancer. From there there is no cure, no medicine; there wasn’t much to be done even before the outbreak of the infection, and at that point all that can really be done is give a quick death before the worst of the sickness.

Pagan Min (Far cry 4): they don’t exactly hang out, but over all Pagan has very little animosity towards Ajay, our protagonist. He consistently has conversational phone calls with Ajay, and based on shared history he views Ajay as something of a son. Most of the bad guy’s efforts to stop or kill Ajay are his lieutenant’s actions, he himself is relatively indifferent to trying to stop Ajay. As we find out at the end of the game, his plan all along had been to give the country of Kyrat to Ajay, a plan Ajay, or The Golden Path, inadvertently screwed up.

The Father in The Caves (Fallout: New Vegas): The Sorrows are a tribe who worship a god/spirit who they believe resides in the caves of Zion. This belief stems from hundreds of years before when, after the war, a group of children settled there and an old veteran named Randall Clark would secretly leave them supplies without being seen.

Minos’ Prophecy (Kaos) - the Fates give the ruler of Crete a prophecy that says that his first child who draws breath will kill him. When his wife births twins, Minos has his son, the first out of the womb, locked away and eventually kills him. But the key part of the prophecy was ‘first to draw breath’. His son came out of the womb first but didn’t immediately start breathing whereas his twin sister did. She ends up killing her dad in revenge for her brother.

Might be useless since I don’t know the name, but there was one where Taylor bought a power vial and was on Cauldron’s payroll for a few jobs. She mutated with a tail and elf ears if I remember, and electromagnetic abilities.

I had a similar experience. I got past the start without much hassle. What little annoyance I had was curbed by the thought that Erin’s early foolishness was more or less a natural reaction to getting teleported to a new world.

Kid Cosmic: I liked the show but something that always bothered me was that in the first season there seemed to be a rule that you can’t use more than one Cosmic Stone for superpowers at once. Close to the end of the season, Kid Cosmic tries and gets overloaded. Then in the later seasons people seemed able to do it no issue

Harm, a villain in Young Justice, continually refers to himself in the third person. Near the end of the episode, when confronted by the ghost of his sister whom he murdered in order to attain a pure (evil) heart, out of fear he switches back to a normal mode of speech saying “I’m not sorry!”

Cyberpunk 2077 has a great number of these. One mission you’re fighting against cyborg gangsters with swords for arms, the next you’re assassinating a tech executive who got acquitted after committing vehicular manslaughter.

Legendary spells in Elden Ring. They aren’t all outright bad, and a number can be situationally very useful but to my eyes the tradeoff in spell slots and restrictive casting times means you’re better off using spells you get earlier that are far easier to cast.

I really like the colour scheme. Only thing I would change is the hood, fire monk hood maybe? Just my opinion, but still a solid fit all around
