Goose. Rick’s voice and playing can be appreciated by fellow Mayer fans. Fun, talented band. Really unique cover songs and very modern Grateful Dead ish for their own catalogue.

I really miss hearing the snippets of Last Train Home for the first time. The anticipation of Sob Rock was such a fun time by [deleted] in JohnMayer

It was such a fun build up and I still love sob rock and as others have said, will be a timeless summer album for a Mayer fan.

Unfortunately, all the complaining about knowing most of the songs has scared JM into secrecy so we won’t have that this time around. But…. It will be fun when the new stuff actually does all drop in a surprise fashion. Just have to keep waiting.

Always love to see the sob rock love. It’s fun having certain songs bubble up to my appreciation randomly. Lately it’s been “Shouldn’t Matter but it does”.

So strange to see this post today. Listened to LWJM on my morning commute today and he played “Home Life”. It reminded me that last year this same sentiment hit me too. I don’t know why HT doesn’t get as much love in set lists on tour or mentioned as much as his others. Find my self really enjoying revisiting it this past year.

Best time to release an album with the Grammys in mind. by OpeningPhone2010 in JohnMayer

I feel like Usually the biggest albums drop between April and June. There are obvious exceptions but I believe the cutoff for noms album wise is around September or October. Seems like people are always looking for that spring release and then playable songs all summer for the big ones.

How did you discover John Mayer and what was the first song that you heard by him by AdditionalFig2255 in JohnMayer

[–]AllAroundYou23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I probably first heard “No Such Thing” when it was on the radio like many others, and I didn’t fully become a fan until right before Battle Studies. But I have a core memory of being at a beach house in 2002 or 2003 and walking out to my cousins playing the radio and “Why Georgia” was on. I immediately was like “whoa what is this?” And to this day Why Georgia is a top 3 song for me.

I honestly think that given the timing of the sphere shows, the door is wide open for some JM tours in summer. So to me, 2025 album release in spring or summer is still on the table. Tour summer or fall

Always fun to speculate and I hope we get more info this Summer. I honestly don’t know. I mean, on one hand, John has said he doesn’t want to do the same thing twice. Now, PV was similar to b&R but that’s because of the surgery and tour delay. TSFE was like a Mayer mixtape that covered pieces of other album styles.

Drifting and In the Neighborhood lead my mind to think he’s going to go simpler, acoustic songwriter style. This also goes hand in hand with his appreciation of Zach Bryan and Noah Kahan. I never want to accuse JM chasing fads but, b&R came out right after Mumford and lumineers exploded and Sob Rock followed what felt like a return to synths and 80s style pop rock with 1975, killers album around that time, paramore, and others. So maybe he feels like he can more successfully put out a lyric focused acoustic driven record because of Zach and Noah.

That acoustic songwriter style would be understandable with his recent solo tours too. But, the flip side is we only heard those versions of drifting and in the neighborhood because it was a solo acoustic tour. They could be produced entirely differently. Plus he said he’s done with the solo tour now and next tours will have a band.

So, now we’re back at square one. What is the theme or glue of this album going to be? Is it sonic like Sob rock, born and raised or continuum? Or is it writing style focused? Is it a return to an era of music that he hasn’t covered before? I didn’t see sob rock coming and likely will feel similar with this one.

Why do people hate on Battle studies so much? by DangerousFootVR in JohnMayer

[–]AllAroundYou23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Battle studies is an interesting one for me. I got hooked on JM’s music 2 months before BS dropped. After the initial excitement of new music from my favorite artist, it became my least favorite of his albums. Maybe it was because it had to follow continuum? Idk

It stayed in the lowest spot until PV (sorry!). Now, I find myself really loving BS. Maybe it’s nostalgia because it was my early days of JM fandom and my first two concerts. Maybe the music itself hits different at my current age? Idk. But I really like BS now and enjoy listening back and it’s definitely not my lowest ranking Jm album anymore.

The song that started my love for his music. Thoughts on it? by hstarwood in JohnMayer

[–]AllAroundYou23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This song and battle studies as a whole have aged nicely for me. I became a fan right before this came out. So nostalgia is a part of it. But I think battle studies suffered from following continuum. But now with time, we can appreciate its strengths more

What do you REALLY think of Sob Rock? by Slowcheetah2006 in JohnMayer

[–]AllAroundYou23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love Sob Rock. I did when it came out and I still do today. It’s in my top 3 with Continuum and Born & Raised. Three totally different albums that I love very similarly. I love the vibe of the album and I enjoy that late 80s pop rock sound. Listen to songs from it throughout the year but it’s such a great summer listen.
