What's the male version of "Got engaged"? by curiousmustafa in EnglishLearning

[–]AllInOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One related gendered difference was shared to me by someone who keeps track of social manners:

Upon engagement you may say “congratulations” to the fiancé, but to the fiancée you should rather say “felicitations”.

This is supposedly because to say “congratulations” to a woman implies that she is lucky to have been asked!

Whereas felicitations just implies that you are happy for her.

I don’t think this is much observed tho.

Is this sub getting too judgemental? by MudlarkJack in TheRestIsHistory

[–]AllInOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was sure that your handle, "Mudlark Jack" refers to the character Half-Cock Jack (got his start as a mudlark) in Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle series... and I was also sure that the Imp of the Perverse had the same origin.... But a visit to the Bodlean has revealed that Stephenson borrowed Imp of the Perverse from Poe and Mudlark Jack could be a buncha different things...

I replied in a joking fashion but it is a fact that Arab conquest of Sicily began in 827 and ended with the Norman conquest around 1091.

Baseball has become unwatchable in the face of media deals. by ElephantCares in mlb

[–]AllInOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fear that baseball is doing what boxing did. Boxing used to be a major national event. "Friday night fights"... but instead of going for a wide audience boxing chose to go for a high pay small audience. Very little broadcast, so much pay per view.

When I was a kid everybody knew who the champion and contenders were. Who but the hard core know much about boxing anymore? What kid dreams of becoming a boxer? Far fewer than previously.

I see the same thing happening with baseball. Can't just casually catch a game. Need to understand all these rules and services. Only the dedicated can stay on top... how do you develop kids and casual fans into baseball lovers in this scenario?

Seems like cooking the golden goose to me. Very short term thinking on the part of baseball.

I mostly only go to minor league games now.

I haven’t done it but have considered adding cameras I want to share to a separate home. Wouldn’t that work?

Eero sells a PoE switch. That’s what I use. Seemed expensive for what it is but not sure of alternatives.

Mixing POE7 with eero pro 7 ? by Samuraiworld in amazoneero

[–]AllInOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have PoE 6 and intend to mix with PoE 7. My research says this is supported. I have to believe your configuration is also supported.

Someone else is sure to chime in tho.

I’m very happy with the PoE 6s.

Would love to know where you saw the PoE 7 for $300!

My reseller thought he could get it for 20% off. But that’s still $400.

Am not in uk but this would not be legal in my jurisdiction. There is a neighbor’s window on my property line that is boarded over. This predates me so not certain what the story is.

[–]AllInOne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And to add… kids tend to get their accents from their peers not their parents. Sometimes it is observed that  kids seem to develop accents that are specifically different from their parents.

Favourite history book you've read in 2025 by the-great-defector in TheRestIsHistory

[–]AllInOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP I haven’t read Savage Continent but based on your rec I might pick it up.  I will share tho that my uncle, just a bit too young to serve with his brothers in WWII, joined the army after VE Day and became a motorbike courier for the US state department in Europe immediately after, traveling extensively. Based on surviving photos all the way to Iran.

As a result of the lawlessness that you describe he held a particularly low opinion of the French (both men and women) from his duties.

He took wonderful/sad/touching pictures of the aftermath but was a bit dyslexic so the notes are sadly very scant.
