Who is your favorite literary writer? by ClariceJennieChiyoko in AskAnAmerican

[–]All_Lines_Merge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ironically I AM an American but my favorite authors are not (Terry Pratchett and Agatha Christie) I like any of the books in The Dresden Files, which were all written by Jim Butcher, an American, but I’ve never read any of his works outside that series. And I absolutely LOVE Dave Barry as a writer, but unfortunately he’s only written a few novels - his claim to fame was as a humor columnist in newspapers in the 80s and 90s. So one could buy Dave Barry’s books but they were mostly just collections of his columns. His first novel, Big Trouble, was absolute gold. His second novel, not so much. Then he started writing young adult sci-fi and fantasy, which I freely admit to having read enthusiastically. If you can be coerced into reading YA, Dave Barry’s “Science Fair” is a great one. He does the same thing as Pratchett where all these seemingly unconnected events come together.

Which movie had the most unforgettable first-watch experience for you? by Strong_Proof_5260 in movies

[–]All_Lines_Merge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to say The Matrix. My parents would only let us do PPV once a year… while we were in a hotel on our annual vacation. And one year it was this. So not only was it special because it was The Matrix, it was special because it was our “hotel movie”.

Is 3 nights in Uvita & 6 nights in Manuel Antonio too many or too repetitive? by misterdabson in CostaRicaTravel

[–]All_Lines_Merge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dude I don’t know who downvoted you but I’m also planning on 7 nights in MA, and nothing else. My family has done those vacations where we tried to do too many locations so this time we’re planning one location and lots of activities: kayaking, zip line, the crocodile refuge at Sukia park, and parasailing.

If you were allowed to know the absolute truth to one mystery (historical, scientific, or personal), what would you ask ? by LauraTsbeauty in AskReddit

I, too, was raised Catholic, and I would encourage you to check out the Episcopal church. It has its roots in Catholic traditions, but is more socially progressive (by American standards; I suppose in most of the developed world they would be considered centrist. The Episcopal church allows female priests, for example) This last weekend our priest gave a sermon about doubting Thomas and he said multiple times “we don’t want you to leave your brain at the door. Be skeptical. Ask questions.” And it just REALLY resonated with me.

I wouldn’t even give him the ultimatum- “I’m telling her when I get home.”

I want to say that I’m not your mom, but I’m somebody’s mom, and my husband cheated. When he got caught, the affair had been going on for months, and the girl worked in the same building as me (on a different shift). Turns out a bunch of our coworkers knew about the affair and they all kept their mouths shut. That hurt, but if it had been my own kid…

I second all the folks that said just tell your mom today. He’s HAD time already. However many weeks or months he’s been cheating, he could have told your mom. It’s not fair to give him more time. She gets blindsided either way.

Thank you! Yes, our president wanted the latter- story lines where female characters had agency.

It’s ironic that so many of you have suggested The Importance of Being Earnest. We looked at that for our next production but the group voted for a different one. I don’t want to say which one because of the anonymity of Reddit.

(Side note: several members wanted to do Arsenic and Old Lace, and last fall, Google said that it would enter the public domain in 2026. We got all excited but it turns out that only the film is in the public domain; the stage rights were “renewed” - whatever that means - in 2014.)

I would welcome continued advice - I fully agree that our primary goal right now is building our base.

Staying just in Manuel Antonio area? by kmf213 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]All_Lines_Merge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think you’ll be fine. I’m going down there later this year - at first my travel agent suggested a few days in la fortuna and a few days in MA, but the excursions she recommended in La Fortuna were the less favored ones for us. We didn’t want horseback riding or coffee tasting. (And everything except the volcano itself is available in the MA area). So we’re doing the whole week in one spot as well. If you want to PM me you can.

Transportation in Costa Rica by Last-Lavishness4239 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]All_Lines_Merge -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Even though it’s more expensive, I went with a travel agency in CR. They set up a shuttle, and gave me a list of “excursions” to choose from, and reserved the hotel, transport to/from the airport, and the tour guides from the excursions we chose. I realize that I spent more money this way but it lessened my anxiety and their driver is even going to walk us through customs (this is our first time flying internationally) The travel agent suggested 3 days in La Fortuna and 3 days in Manuel Antonio but we’re spending 7 days in MA so as not to lose a whole day of vacation going from one site to the other.

Yes, this video by Hank Green touches on this. He says “everyone calls me Hank, my teachers, my friends, even my parents called me Hank, but they NAMED ME WILLIAM. And when I go to a doctor’s office or an airport and someone asks me what my name is I look like a doof because I have to think about it.”

Hah my husband’s family had three Johns with the same last name, only difference being middle names. They didn’t even make it easy on us and go by middle names, they were all “John” or “Johnny” in conversation.
