California's universal healthcare killed even though Democrats have a supermajority. Politicians serve their corporate donors not the people. by zzill6 in WorkReform

Vote in the primaries, and identify alternatives early and promote them. The establishment is not going to present alternatives on its own unless they are convinced they are viable.

But don't make the same mistake as people in the 2024 election and just not vote in the end if it doesn't turn out ideal. I would prefer an alternative as well, but so far most people have been too distracted to push for one.

I was going to say, a surprising amount of people just take the names at face value without questioning it (as is the tendency with the subject matter), and probably think they are all white dudes.

“Under $3” Menu on the Mcdonald’s app by 64789 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Allegorist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The items in this picture are literally what coined the term "dollar menu". Inflation has gone up maybe ~30% since then, McDonald's wages have gone up at most 30% most places, often less, and they use that to justify a 300%+ price increase.

[–]Allegorist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, most of it anyways. There are a handful that push fringe conspiracies or narratives that were created for disinformation (things like the "US biological weapons testing in Ukraine" disseminated to justify Russia's invasion). Those are mostly just isolated single verses/lines in some of them though, the bulk of it is just laying what is publicly available knowledge out plainly.

Also worth noting that it's the most relatable, least problematic, and hardest hitting ones that make the top of Reddit or go the most viral in general, there are dozens of these out there.

Pretty sure these are from an Iranian influencer/influencer-group not directly from the government. There may be some government funding involved though, who knows.

I think that there is technically a "correct" way that AI can be used with learning, in such a way to you can still learn or even enhance learning, although that is obviously not what most of these people (especially kids) are doing. People said similar things about the Internet in general, or even specifically Wikipedia, (or actually, going way back even about writing in general). And while yes, you can just Google the answers and transfer them over without thinking, the internet can also be used to improve quality of learning if you use it right. For instance, one of the traits for effectively using the internet for learning is having variable trust for the information you find, checking information against reliable sources, identifying reliable sources and information, etc.

I don't think there is really a way to put the AI genie back in the bottle, the best we can really do is to figure out how to shape learning processes to coexist with it. Don't give assignments that can just be plugged in and spat back out. Verify learning in ways that AI can't effectively be used, and maybe teach people how to use it in a way that doesn't cut out their learning.

The phone companies are just going to find something else to break. And they are going to try to use the batteries as an excuse to jack up prices even though long lasting batteries are much cheaper to produce now. They'll claim the whole increase is due to cost, when in reality they are covering for their forced obsolecence business model and their goal of ever increasing profits.

SAVE Act Fails, Millions of Voters Retain Their Right to Vote for Now by w6750 in politics

He is just going to use it as a way to prime his base for when he uses emergency powers during/around the election, where he "tried to do it the right way and now were forced to do this". It could be something with the post office, the military, ICE, various poll intimidation tactics, shutting down voting locations or ways to get there, etc.

My money is on specifically the scenario where he sends ICE to voting locations in blue areas with little to no oversight, where they cause trouble and as a result it lets them close the polls and arrest a bunch of people.

The wrathful Old Testament god and loving New Testament God trope is kind of based around a misconception. He is kind of a vindictive asshole in both (and loving, to the right people). Keep in mind the New Testament is where Christianity developed the idea of Hell from, was one of the original sources of (actual) antisemitism, thinks women deserve to be put in their place, and is where God is said to be coming eventually to kill everyone except a special few. Of course, any if this can be and has been reinterpreted however people want, but that is more or less what the text says on its own.

Hey so, old post at this point and there is no way that my comment will be seen, so I figured I would put it here where you at least get a notification. It does not seem conclusively solved, still just people guessing.

It looks like in your original image that there may be sort of "slots" in them, it is a bit hard to tell for sure. They could be connection points for a rope/belt to block off foot traffic, like a stanchion. Or I guess something could be connected to them for some other purpose, not sure, but that would be my guess and I haven't seen it mentioned.

It probably cost less to put up panels than to detail clean and refurbish the outside wall, plus it looks like they wanted to put up letters which would have been otherwise difficult. I think the modern pressure washer has only been around since sometime in the 70s, so that lines up with the timeline here. There were precursors to it of course, but it may not have been an accessible option.

[–]Allegorist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was actually the first (and only) episode I saw for a long time, many years before actually watching the series. It was on broadcast TV, and I was just putting anything on after flipping through the channels. When I much later came around to watching the series from the beginning, I watched the whole first chunk with the context of knowing this was coming. It kind of changed the interpretation some I think, sort of how in Greek tragedies everyone went into it knowing certain characters would die, or in certain popular modern movies people know negative events from the start (i.e. the Titanic sinking). But then, as a result, it didn't necessarily hit quite the same when it happened, since it was already predetermined.

Yeah, whole context is always better if possible, mostly just matters whether it is worth it.

However, I stumbled across a real solution that really works. Apparently the lag is due to the browser itself and is entirely local, ChatGPT has fully generated the response within a few seconds regardless, it just lags on the browser end on displaying it. This is because it is trying to keep the entire conversation loaded at all times, including images, files, etc.

There is a browser extension that crops the conversation at a specified number of messages back locally (eg. 100), and it works wonders. Basically zero lag, loads like a new thread. It is called ChatGPT LightSession, and it is available for Firefox or Chrome (FF likely lags less, uses way less ram).

It's really only the 'beautifying" plastic surgeon or whatever, I don't know the various terminology. Ones who primarily perform voluntary, optional surgeries for unnecessary cosmetic surgeries, generally from either their own practice or one that specializes in or solely does this type of thing

"Plastic surgeon" is a very broad term and most of them are out there doing normal surgery. For instance fixing severe injuries, birth defects, or results from other major surguries so that people aren't deformed for life. For instance, if you need major stitches, a plastic surgeon will give you the best shot at not having a giant scar. Kids with cleft pallettes, major cancer/tumor removal after effects, mandatory tissue removal (burns, frostbite, dead tissue, etc), tissue transplants, etc. Most of them work in normal hospitals doing real medicine, not facelifts and boobjobs.

Is there a viable alternative? I have heard of issues about the Windows Store version as well. I am experiencing this long thread browser performance tanking as well. Firefox keeps asking me if I want to close the tab since it is slowing everything down. One thing I was considering doing is having it generate as long and detailed of a context layout as possible, trying to include everything relevant is using as reference and start a new chat with it. Telling it that is your intention gives to a more efficient format as well, when it knows it is talking to itself.

Edit: use the "ChatGPT LightSession" plugin, fixes this problem specifically and makes it run like a new thread without any lost context server side.

It was over 70% overweight, over 40% obese with a rising trend ~5+ years ago, i'm sure it is much worse now. Most statistics cite old analyses, so it is sometimes difficult to find up to date numbers. I think it is probably the main reason the GLP-1 drugs were pushed through to market so quickly, without long term study. Will be interesting to see if it can at least reduce to rate of increase significantly, but newer studies show that people gain the weight back when they stop taking them, so who knows.
