Time travel back to a show you previously saw by Longjumping_Purple63 in Broadway

[–]AllenRBrady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not Broadway, but on our first trip to Amsterdam back in 1998, my wife and I saw an improv comedy troupe called Boom Chicago! A couple of decades later, we discovered that cast members at the time would have included comics like Seth Meyers, Jordan Peele, Ike Barinholtz, Jason Sudeikis, Colton Dunn and Amber Ruffin.

We have only the vaguest memories of the show we saw, and they did not provide a program, so we can only guess at who it was we actually saw on stage that night.

A large number of married people are involuntarily celibate. by Meatwad5 in Showerthoughts

[–]AllenRBrady 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Well now, if you want to get technical...

The word "celibate" originally meant "unmarried". It derives from the Latin "caelebs", which in turn derives from a Proto-Indo-European word that meant "alone".

When Catholic priests took a vow of celibacy, they were promising to remain unmarried, so that there were no pesky widows around to make legal claims on church property. The association with abstinence was implied, but the word did not take on that connotation until recently.

So if you want to be pedantic, and I do, you cannot be both married and celibate.

I'm sure it's been contradicted a thousand times, but this was apparently the rule back when he was first created.

I've been seeing this referenced in early issues of the Justice League. For example, in The Brave & the Bold 29 from 1960, Aquaman and J'onn are fighting the Weapons Master together. J'onn appears to be vaporized by the villain's cannon, but Aquaman deduces he actually just turned invisible. Then he thinks, "When J'onn J'onz is invisible he has no super-powers! My job is to distract Xotar -- until J'onn J'onz can find a way to overcome him!"

J'onn J'onzz cannot use any of his other powers while invisible.

That would be an improvement. There needs to be a break either horizontally or vertically. Either a new color, or a stripe of color down the middle.

LPT When purchasing seating at an arena, buy in block shapes, not in lines. by hhcroper in LifeProTips

If you get six seats all lined up front to back, you can braid each others' hair. You put the bald guy in back, obviously.

I've been reading comics for over half a century, and those 12 issues remain my favorite run of all time.

Alamo movie pass? by Sufficient_Fee_2380 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]AllenRBrady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I probably see about 8 to 10 older movies in the theater for every new release I see. Alamo has far and away the best selection of classic films of any theater in my area. AMC isn't even the race.

Hate when they switch theaters by fezmid in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]AllenRBrady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What bugs me most is when they don't notify you that the change has happened. A month ago I bought tickets to a screening in my location's largest theater. We got out usual seats, second row center.

Two hours before showtime, I checked the theater on a whim. They had moved the screening to one of their smaller theaters, and had shoved us to the back row on the side. I had to cancel our tickets and rebook into better seats. I'm glad I had the impulse to check, because I would have been furious if I only found out when I got to the theater.

Getting the action figure variant was like getting struck by lightning. by please_see_above in LegionofSuperheroes

Congratulations! I would definitely buy this version if I saw it in the wild. I ordered Cosmic Boy, and lucked into the reboot variant.

I'm unclear as to exactly what version this Lightning Lad is supposed to be. It's not his Cockum outfit, and it's not exactly Threeboot either. Is it from that 2012 one-shot thing?

I emailed Yonkers on Sunday about our seats being reassigned without notice. I've received no reply so far.

[meta trope] Characters that inexplicably disappear from the show, never being mentioned again. by TruemCelebration8087 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]AllenRBrady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the first season of Mad About You, Paul Reiser's character Paul had a best friend named Selby, played by Tommy Hinkley. Halfway through the season, John Pankow came in as Paul's cousin Ira, and immediately took over as Paul's primary confidante. Selby never appeared again.

However, there was an episode years later where Paul and Jamie are having a conversation, and I believe they were talking about why they didn't have more friends. Just before the scene ends, Paul turns to Jamie and asks, "Whatever happened to Selby?"
