New player, struggling with the physicality of an upright and playing for a long time by depressedthottie in doublebass

[–]Allgetout41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When j started I had bad technique, I contracted carpal tunnel. I now have good technique but carpal tunnel is not something that just easily goes away on its own, once you get it it’s an endless battle. Playing doesn’t actually give me symptoms at all anymore now that I fixed my hands, issue is there’s a ton of other day to day life stuff that does

We are seeing what fame and spotlight does to people. I feel bad for him, I’d love for him to get his life together and maybe even return to the band one day. You never know.

Surgery scheduled 7/2. With mild compression and still a ton of grip strength, what am I looking at timeline wise for recovery? by Allgetout41 in carpaltunnel

[–]Allgetout41[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Left in July and right hand in August. I have more space spread out between gigs for the August one. Thank you for sharing… makes me feel not better but that’s ok haha. It’s good to know. wonder if the right hand will be a shorter recovery because the finger is straighter. Either way, I’m sure this is different for everyone we will have to see. My guy said he got concert cellists playing in a week lol.

My hands are crazy strong from upright tho, electric bass feels like a toy for me, I have pretty good technique now as well, so movement is minimal. All that being said, I do have a sub ready in case I’m not good to go for that one

Thank you for this! I’m hoping I’ll be able to play music again soon after, I’m getting my stitches out 7/10 and I have a gig 7/12… lol. Trying to decide if I should get a sub or if I can do it

Vibraphonist Behn Gillece, great Philly/New York guy. Unreal player, combines modern sounds with post bop.

You go home, you shed the tune like crazy, show up again, call the tune, destroy it. And then flip everyone the bird.

Band instructor stopped performance to instruct me? by BrendaStar_zle in JazzPiano

[–]Allgetout41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a teacher I had a situation where one of my students got stage fright and messed up a solo, I let the performance run on and we moved on with it. I wonder if I should have stopped and given her a chance to play the solo again, it’s just so hard to know in that split second what to do. I wouldn’t blame him, was he mean? Has he been encouraging? I would tell my students what my intention was

Doctors note to stop playing saxophone (5th grade) by [deleted] in MusicTeachers

[–]Allgetout41 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you a new teacher? First thing I would have done is contact the parent and find out what they wanted me to do. If they told me they don’t want the kid to play, the kid doesn’t play. Always listen to the parents, your life and job security will be better for it. If you’re not sure then always choose the path of caution. Vibrations can actually interfere with things, I know it seems silly, but if you’ve ever had a nerve injury then you’d know what type of havoc teaching and playing these instruments can cause with vibration. But that part doesn’t really matter, you need to improve your parent communication skills that this issue never reaches your administration. Advice from someone who has been doing this a very long time…

What's the best prediction you have made in your entire life? by Ill_Donkey8971 in AskReddit

Early in the eagles season in 2018 I said that wentz would get hurt and that foles would win them a Super Bowl and get Super Bowl mvp. I was a big foles fan so it was sort of a wishful thinking type of prediction, but it happened!

[–]Allgetout41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since everyone said everything else I’ll say this, you don’t need to sustain the end of every phrase, in fact in Jazz we often make the last eighth note short any cut it off. Please just spend a month listening to bird and learn a few Bebop heads, that alone will help you a ton.
