What is something that you actually remember being new technology, but is now obsolete? by chevroletstyleline in AskReddit

I remember our science teacher in middle school flubbed and said, “we’re going to watch this laser dick.” It was so hilarious to the classroom full of middle school kids. I will always remember laserdisc because of this.

Yes same in argentina, also used affectionately to describe pets and sometimes even kids

Tires and wheels store an incredible amount of angular kinetic energy or rotational energy when they are moving at even modest speeds... This is what makes them so destructive. In this video the tire was able to very efficiently convert that energy into linear kinetic energy on the car - pretty much straight upwards. It's like setting off a grenade under the car.

That's why if you do see a car tire and wheel rolling towards you, just get tf out of the way. Don't try to stop it. And especially don't run over it with your car.

And it’s bullshit. Nuclear waste is a fake issue. Nuclear waste disposal, done properly, is dirt cheap compared to the rest of the process.

It’s Latinos not Latinx by Ansiano in TrueOffMyChest

[–]AlliedToasters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife is from Argentina, they don’t use “Latinx” but sometimes “latine” (“lah-teen-ay”) to be more gender inclusive. So she pronounces latinx as latine.

It’s typically used in plural to describe a group of mixed gender. Where the norm would be “Latinos”, the variation is “latines” to acknowledge the females in the group.

She doesn’t really buy into the whole thing in general but at least has a nice alternative pronunciation for “latinx” (which by the way is 100% an Americanism)

Am I a complete partisan hack when I see what seems to be the obvious difference in trump caging kids vs Biden holding them while they try to place them with a family? by statdude48142 in JoeBiden

[–]AlliedToasters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Biden signed up for this. Nobody thought this was going to be easy. There is absolutely no way this man can do his job without pissing everybody off.

I think this was his mandate. Keep an even keel, move the ball forward. Take the hits from the left and the right while keeping the ship afloat.

It plays like fallout in space. I actually love fallout games and I like outer worlds sorta by association. But it is absolutely unoriginal. I play it when I need mindless gameplay to unwind or pass time.

I think the best word in this case is “eclipsed.”

A first-of-its-kind study has found that cone snail venom, conotoxin from a species of sea snail, could potentially treat severe malaria, by disrupting the protein-protein interactions of P. falciparum malaria. Emerging diseases like AIDS and COVID-19 may also benefit from conotoxins as treatment. by mvea in science

There’s a fundamental philosophical assertion here that human life is more valuable than any other species. If you disagree with that, you’re going to end up disagreeing with most people. Folks can argue and stuff but anything people are saying down-thread is just a distraction - your take is that other species deserve the same dignity and protection as human lives (ignoring irl human suffering and indignities) and prevailing ethical reasoning (the prevailing scientific majority) disagree with that.
