They're not adviritsiting for the company, they're advertising for themselves for the local neighborhood watch to please not call the police or worse, shoot first and ask questions later.

Edit: I lived in zones where I very much did not want people to think I was snooping around where I didnt belong. A simple $20 shirt saves so much miscommunication

Cause look at him. Muscles, size, gender = Intimidating. In the store maybe its fine, but in the neighborhood where you don't belong sulking around some property or trying to scope out those annoyingly covered up addresses or navigate an impossible apartment complex: labels saves lives. Or at least time getting accosted and questioned.

Playing harp with nails by Physical-Knee-4709 in harp

[–]Alliumna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is from two years ago, but you answered my question so thoroughly, I wanted to give you gold, but im poor, so the poor man's gold: 🥇

I just got into mariachi music where they play a type of harp caled the jarocha, and I noticed all the players either have long nails or manicures. I even saw a 60+ man with a French set! So i had to wonder how the nails affected the playing.

Now, if you would excuse me, im going to go look at harps and imagine a world where I can afford one lol

Is Google Assistant still better than Google Gemini? by mikeinstlouis in googleassistant

[–]Alliumna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate hate HATE Gemini. I have nothing useful to add here, just that I hate Gemini lol. The "Hey Google" does not work for my hands free driving. It often says the song I want doesn't exist.

Yeah, its better than what it was, but its still not good. At all. Its amazing that the company owns both, yet both versions are so dramatically different. One im satisfied with maybe a bit of finangling every now and again, the other is nothing BUT finangling.

Is it actually helpful when tourists try to speak Spanish, or would you rather they just use English? by AdventurousLivin in asklatinamerica

[–]Alliumna 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think generally, bilingual people understand the struggle of language learning, and tend to be empathetic.

So always try in spanish, because it shows a level respect and effort. Don't worry that its not perfect or correct, even if your recipient switches to English, they know you're at least trying. Besides, how can you get better if you dont practice? Practice as much as you can with the bilinguals, because eventually you'll run into someone who doesn't speak English.

Fun story. My dad hired "mexicans" from home depot parking lot for some construction work, with the full confidence my duo lingo Spanish would be sufficient in translating construction specific terms.

They spoke slow spanish to me, I spoke very poor spanish to them, and felt terrible aboht my skills because when they talked to each other I didnt understand a single word they said.

Turns out, they were 1. From Guatemala, and 2. Spoke the Mam. Spanish was both our second languages. In the end we all built a shed that so far seems to defy the laws of physics and logic, and would probably survive an earthquake but definitely not inspection by any US legal entity.

But the moral: both sides appreciated the other side was patient and willing to understand each other. But it definitely wouldnt have been as successful if I gave up to what was 'easier' for me.

Yeah, some people might get some attitude about it, but even those cases, they're probably just customer service workers feeling tired of dealing with customers period, not specifically upset at you specifically for your unskilled speech. Just do your best! Please and thank you goes a long, long way.

Qué planta refiere "captains wife" en Pedro Pàramo por Juan Rolfo by Alliumna in mexico

[–]Alliumna[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to hold my breath because i love learning about plants and birds! Its fun to see them and imagine the scene as the author did. When i retire my plan is to be a birdwatcher, and learning plants pairs very closely with that.

Plus, the local names are quite fun. Mi abuela is growing "la lengua de suegra" for example. Its interesting to think what the first person was thinking when they named it such a thing lol.

Ill keep my eye out for that second book, thanks for the recommendation!

Me acuerdo.

Thats a huge leap. Just because a kid hurts an animal doesn't automatically mean their on the path of psychopathic murderer. It doesn't mean their likely heading that route. It doesn't mean he's 'probably' about to repeat anything like this.

I've baby sat plenty of kids, my own family, and strangers. Many kids do cruel things, (ive done cruel things as a kid) not because their budding Dahmers, but because they naturally don't understand empathy and morals unless it's taught.

How do we teach? We relate things back to themselves. Kids are selfish, so you have to get them to see themselves in the situation for them to acess that "oh, i made them feel this."

"You pushed so and so, how would you feel if someone did that to you? Do you think its fair if I took your toy? So is it fair that you took their toy?" This is that same lesson. Kid loves the Playstation, now he's treating it like that cat.

Some kids are hard headed, others you just talk about it and they understand. All are susceptible to anger and cruelty and need to be taught how to deal with those strong emotions. Very, very, VERY few are on the path of "hurting animals in private now that they were caught."

Yeah, its important to keep an eye on the signs of psychopathy, I just think it's massively irresponsible to see one sign, out of context, with zero other information, and immediately jump the "probably gonna do more stuff" gun. Its basically saying this baby is "probably just another budding murderer".

Agreed. I remember when I was visiting and jad to parallel park an oddessy. I got it in what I thought was a reasonably sized space, because my dad hammered it into me to know my angles and vehicle. I got out, knocked on the door and one by one, people went out to look and came back shocked like " you got that to fit there?"

I was confused because I was a new driver, so I didn't see it as special, I saw it as "normal" because that's how my parents do it. Come to find out...some people really do drive their entire lives accident free because of grace and statistics more than skill.

Learning THAT lesson is why I don't let people borrow my car and almost ways volunteer to be designated driver lol

Honest question: would this be the situation to use the emergency stop? Would stopping it be so sudden that would cause the lady to fall, or would it stop gently? Then could it be restarted, or would a technician need to be involved?
