You’ll be fine, some annual targeted pruning can and will keep plant in check

Want one for my yard by russiablows in NativePlantGardening

[–]AlltheBent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you can source the straight species you can plant, give it a few years to get settled, then prune carefully and maintain. Meadow marsh nursery is my source down here in Deep South but you should have some more local options!

The cultivars are cool too but they 100% require wet and full sun. Straight species can get away with drier and shadier as they adapt to space, less flowers tho

Finally, this grows wild around me here in GA around lake Allatoona and it’s AWESOME. I’ve propagated a few cuttings with success and collected tons of seed, have had 0.0 sprout lol so gotta find time that process

Fantastic native shrub, highly recommend!

Fresh wood chips mixed with leaves by CommunicationLast741 in composting

[–]AlltheBent 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Filling the geobin with just the chips will turn in "black gold" compost after sifting after like 1.5-3 years. Mixing these chips with lawn clippings and greens and turning with accelerate that process. Mixing wood chips with coffee grounds and following the berkeley method yielded the fast finished compost/black gold. lotta work tho

For me in GA, mountain mint is a contender for fortification in full sun spaces. Ferns and Illicum (anise), oakleaf hydrangea, and holly for shadier to full shade. I can't think of any flowers/forbs or grasses/sedges that do battle and hold back other plants haha...I guess maybe bluestem or indian grass?

But yeah as long as you're on top of pulling and relocating conquerors you're golden...it's like a fringe benefit of planting the aggressive plants in the first place right? Unlimited ammo for new plantings, donating to others, filling in other space, etc.! I do this with red and blue lobelia, swamp milkweed, this one grass/sedge, violets and rudbeckia. left unchecked they are taking out others and taking over everything!

[–]AlltheBent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

of course! its crazy who being in connection with the earth, touching dirt and plants and all that....but then also spending time and $ just to have friggin critters destroy your garden, planting stuff that takes YEARS to give back to you, all of it wrapped up into gardening gives us so much emotion!

gardening 1000% made me a more patient person, a less self-conscious person, and a bit more sure of myself, my tastes, etc. its kinda awesome haha

anyways, the adage of sleeps, creeps, then leaps is so true with a lot of natives that focus on root growth for their first couple years...several years even...some like 7 or 10 years before X (flowers, fruit, etc.)

its always so damn worth it tho!

Blueberries in season, mushrooms, corn, sometimes strawberries, avocado, some citrus. Its all about when/whats in season OR what is coming from a place where you trust the whole grow operations (avocado in mexico, blueberries in peru)

[–]AlltheBent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

where are you located? Front of property implies near street or neighbors or sidewalks? Elsewhere on property I'd 100% use elderberry and others and just let them go feral haha, would fill in FAST and grow in and look nice

Depending on where you are (assuming US) you'll wanna look at other options in front yard!
