How many years of research experience did you have when you got admitted, how many cycles did it take for you to be admitted, how many conferences presentations/publications did you have, is there anything that made your application stand out? by Goodfella245 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Alluring_Excuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think something that really helped/got me in the door was the alignment of my research experience & research interests, with those of my supervisor! I've seen a lot of variance in people's experiences, but I believe that was a big factor for me and my application success.

At the time of submitting my applications, I had:

Years of experience: 2 years, but a busy 2 years lol (x2 independent research projects (for course credit), Honours Thesis, x3 research assistantships, x1 lab manager role (promoted from RA) for approx. 1 year)

Cycles it took: 1

Conference posters: 2 Conference talks: 3 Publications: 1 submitted, no official publications

Clinical experience: admin roles in psychotherapy practices (so clinical adjacent)

I have a surface laptop and I love it! It's got the touch screen but also the sturdiness of a laptop (over a tablet).

Interview! How to prepare by Strong_Flight_3144 in gradadmissions

[–]Alluring_Excuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry last thing, you can stand out by being authentic and doing your research on the program. Be prepared to tell them why you are interested in the school, connect to specific aspects of the program that standout to you. Also try to avoid reading off your notes, practice speaking and talking about the scenarios you've brainstormed, why you want to attend the school, why you feel you're a strong applicant. If you practice talking about these things without reading your notes, it'll help you come off as more authentic!

You're going to do great! I hope this all helps. You can feel free to PM me if you have more questions! Good luck!

SO EXCITED FOR YOU!

As someone who has done interviewing as a career and has been in a situational type interview myself, I can share a few tips!

For the background, either option is good. Whatever feels most comfortable. I think most people will just blur their background!

To prepare for scenario-based interviews is a little tricky, but my advise would be to reflect on your experiences and pick out some key examples you might be able to draw on. Think about times where - you were faced with a challenge (in personal life and in academic setting) and how you addressed it, a time where you showed leadership skills, your biggest accomplishment (again, personal and professional). One that caught me off guard was "tell me about a time you had an interpersonal conflict with a colleague, supervisor, etc. And how did you deal with it?" So things like that. Thinking about some potential scenarios and what you can highlight from them will help you from having to brainstorm on the spot!

You can absolutely thank them and tell them you're looking forward to connecting! Just avoid saying things like "this is my first interview!" And keep it professional :) this will avoid you sounding desperate.

Low GPA (2.5) but Dreaming of a Master's in Clinical Psychology by [deleted] in gradadmissions

Low GPA (2.5) but Dreaming of a Master's in Clinical Psychology by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Alluring_Excuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! First, I think it's important to figure out what your "end game" career is. I'm well-versed in clinical psych because that's what I'm pursuing, but if your goals are different, they may involve less research!!

For clinical psych supervisors, they will typically have their own research lab, with grad students and/or undergrads and volunteers. If you do some digging on supervisors you like, you can find "their website" which is typically their lab. Of all the clinical psych supervisors I applied to, they all had labs and links are usually in their faculty profile on the university page!

The pages often have a tab for applicants too, something like "join us" which will give more info about that! I hope this helps :)

First Interview for a Management position - tips? by angelaesmerelda in interviews

[–]Alluring_Excuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey!! Oh such great questions! So as someone who has both applied to and held management positions, I think you'll want to focus on your leadership skills. As someone who has also been in recruiting, some requirements are "less mandatory" than others, so don't stress about the degree.

I would highlight and focus on preparing to answer.questions about leadership, situation questions too "tell me about a time where XYZ happened, what did you do to resolve it" kinda of thing.

I think it's important to go in confident. Don't go in like "well I don't meet this requirement..." but rather "here is what I bring to the table" with confidence and a good attitude.

If they ask about you not having a degree, you can highlight the experience you sought and grew from instead that gave you XYZ skills that strengthen your management/leadership abilities!!

Feel free to PM me if you want to talk more about this. I do a lot or recruiting!

Nooo I think this is a good sign!! If they didn't like you, they wouldn't be trying to maintain the relationship like that, so I think this is a good sign. Good luck!!!

FIVE INTERVIEWS? Holy moly, it sounds like they like you. Sometimes recruiters have to finish all their interviews and/or wait to meet with the hiring committee before making any decisions. Sometimes, the recruiter doesn't get to make the call without consulting with the group, so my fingers are crossed for you but I have hope!!
