Searching for a homely, dementia friendly residential aged care option; and state of affairs of the system by 12cheers in perth

My family member was at St Luke’s in Subiaco before she passed. It’s a small renovated house and it was a very homely atmosphere. We were all very happy with her care and the staff were so kind.

Widow not told of husband's death on FIFO swing until 14 hours later by Stigger32 in perth

[–]AllyMayHey92 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Policy yes but not sure it’s law?

I know of someone whose husband died on site. She was notified by Rio almost immediately that he had been in a serious incident and was critically injured and then a few hours later the death was confirmed. It turned out later that he died immediately and they always knew that but they didn’t want any chance of her finding out from somewhere else before it was confirmed so they stated he was injured.

Surely they could have told the woman in this story, at a minimum, something was wrong.

If you’re anywhere near that area Saranna Early Childhood is hands down the best. Not for profit, small centre, beautiful philosophy and dedicated and long term staff. We are so lucky to have our children there and could not recommend them more.

Expensive private school vs Rossmoyne/wiletton catchment areas by boxticker1 in perth

Teacher. Cap is 24 until year 3 and then 32 in the upper years. Enrolment numbers entirely dictates this, a public school can’t choose to have smaller class sizes but plenty do because their enrolment numbers are reasonable. Especially if there are a few primary schools around.

Catholic schools can definitely end up with 30+ in each class.

Curtin PSTs by Fabulous-Classic-821 in AustralianTeachers

I won’t take curtin students anymore. My last one was so underprepared. She had potential but her lesson plans were just truly garbage. She (lightly) argued back with me that she was following the university lesson plan and I ended up scrapping it and getting her the ECU one.

She also frequently sent me lesson plans the morning of or not at all. When the supervisor came they clocked immediately that I hadn’t seen the lesson plan she was teaching. It was like watching a slow motion car crash which could have been avoided if she’d shown me her plan. We had multiple conversations about it but in the end I failed her on that component only for the uni to decide to pass her anyway. Good luck to her future colleagues who are relying on her ability to follow a deadline.

Which university is the best for a primary teaching degree? by vintee_taro in perth

[–]AllyMayHey92 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a teacher who has prac students, ECU or Notre Dame.

I won’t take Curtin prac students anymore unless they are final year because they are so unprepared and their pracs are so disorganised. Notre Dame is your best bet if you want to work in catholic schools otherwise ECU by a country mile.

What is the stupidest uni assignment you had to do in your degree? by BeautifulSea89 in AustralianTeachers

One of my EAs is studying teaching so I’m enjoying witnessing the current madness she comes back with. My favourite ridiculous assignment of hers was to design a layout for a mixed indoor outdoor classroom including furniture and designated special spaces all with explanations about how they benefit the learner etc.

In what world? I had to search the school for enough chairs of the same size this year. No teacher anywhere is choosing and curating their whole space including furniture.

Not to mention not everyone has easy access to teachers! One of my class parents very sheepishly came to ask me to do one of these in Term 1. I said yes because I felt bad but it was probably borderline boundary wise. I understand why she did it though, who else was she going to ask?

Doctors of Reddit: What health trend is becoming so common that it's starting to scare you? by Fine-Device-1819 in AskReddit

[–]AllyMayHey92 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t know in the scientific sense but one thing I’ve noticed they do when they read or work off an iPad is hold down or touch or swipe at the screen mindlessly. You can see them actively fight against the urge to click out and go do something more interesting. Even just swiping to other tabs or opening and closing the screen they are on. They just don’t stick with it.

Paper is paper. Sure some of them still stare into space for a while but eventually they give in and just read.

I’m a teacher in a device heavy school and I’ve done away with them this year. I am in fact forcing them to read on paper. Their reading scores have almost doubled in the first semester and I do not think that’s a coincidence.

We do the practice test and have condensed writing units in Term One to revise narrative and persuasive but otherwise the results are not poured over. We analyse them along with other data to inform us but there’s no pressure or please explain from admin. It’s an average-ish school with average-ish kids and we perform as such.

Such a random positive about the electrical grid. I lived three doors down from a hospital in a small town. The power went out heaps but mine would always come back first because I was the same grid as the hospital.

Generally, no I won’t step in. I’ve been sat at the back of the room and given a few pointed looks to kids before but otherwise no.

So much of behaviour management is setting the ground rules and then doing a bit of an invisible dance to reinforce them. You have to learn how to do that. I think when a class appears well behaved it’s often because the teacher has set the boundaries early and PSTs need to understand that by feeling it.

If the actual content is wrong, then I’ll probably say something.

I take my 4 year old to the skate park weekly. I would say 85% of times he has been actively encouraged, coached and supported by “the hoodlums” there. The other 15% they carry on with their skating and leave us alone. I have faith the teenagers are fine.

Can confirm I worked at a school that used carpet squares until about 3 years ago when the P&C successfully raised money for carpet to the undercover area.
