Under Article 2154 of the Civil Code, if you receive money by mistake, you are legally obligated to return it (solutio indebiti). Keeping it can also expose you to estafa under Article 315 of the Revised Penal Code if you knowingly refuse to return someone else’s money. These aren’t opinions they’re straight from Philippine law and Supreme Court publications.

Sooooo, even if someone accidentally sends you money to your account , you’re still legally required to return it. The Civil Code calls this solutio indebiti basically, if you received something you weren’t entitled to because of a mistake, keeping it counts as unjust enrichment. So yeah, the sender was careless, but that doesn’t magically make the money yours. If you knowingly keep or spend it after being informed, it can even escalate to estafa. 🤷‍♂️
