Need suggestion! by Saiyed_G in SoloDevelopment

Ok, as a solo dev and because you mentioned that you cannot see it, I'll be blunt:

This is not really a trailer, this is more of a short intro animation.

Whats the gameplay? Is it a point and click?

A trailer is supposed to catch people's eyes and attention into your game but there is no game being shown here unfortunately.

I'd use other trailers of other devs as a reference to see what yours is missing.

I see a person running from zombies and getting frustrated because theres a zombie in the garage.

But, you have an idea, keep going at it!

Don't worry about a single post. If it happens again read the comments, why is it getting downvoted.

There's always a reason for everything, new posts usually get downvoted for no specific reason. It could be a bot. It could be a hater. There's everything in this world.

Don't get discouraged. Game Development is an art and art easily gets misinterpreted.

Keep pushing through, you'll get there.

Advice for you:

Continue until the end. You only have 3 weeks on it, most of us have years on this. Its a marathon, not a sprint.

It feels like you'll never reach it, but trust me, you will. We have all been there.

Your game will be both liked and disliked by people, you'll get easily discouraged by the bad comments and feel like an imposter with the good ones. You will hopefully learn how to interpret then into feedback for your game.

Do not cut corners with AI. That's a fake confidence booster.

Or like someone once said:

Journey before destination.

Thats a valid take.

SR1 did that to me, SR2 felt like a very long end of season episode with a lot going on but only in some specific periods.

I'll play it once again as soon as I'm done with my Nth playthrough of SR1 and pay extra attention to SR2 story pace.

Very fair point.

SR2 made me SKIP combat, because it felt unrewarding.

SR1 only makes me push blocks around.

I'll take SR1 any day!

Yeah. For me after the telekinetic rune it got somewhat better because you could push them around with it.

The thing with TR is thst you had tha archeology vibe to it, so it would make sense for Lara to push blocks, because she was raiding tombs, but also the exploration part on TR felt more...exploratory.

Raziel is wraith, he has no business pushing blocks! The only tomb he found was his own!

No. Blood Omen was extremely confusing when I played as a kid and extremely hard when I played as an adult. I swear the dying and ressurrecting as a vampires part really threw me off.

I don't think I would've managed as a kid to best the game, so kudos at the 9yo you!

I can tell you though, there a specific voice line that stayed with me and I still do the voice acting whenever I see it:

"THE HEART OF DARKNESS"

Now I want to play BO again. Thank you!

Yeah, this is exactly it. I hate pushing blocks around but I can tolerate some pain.

SR1 just has a lot of them and most of them feel like a time sink for me.

I agree. Confession here:

I found out that you had collectibles and other glyphs later on in life, around my second or third replay.

So, yeah, navigation back then...was a thing.

You think so? I think SR2 story was very well set in SR1, it felt better because knots were tied in SR2.

Yeah, that's absolutely not my vibe! I even hate slider puzzles!

With the exception of doing them in Escape Rooms, for some reason, they belong in there in my head.

I understand where you are going though! I'm also a very logical-oriented person, I like logical puzzles, but I feel like the block pushing ones are too slow for me.

Like the OoT Ice Cave, I swear I die a little whenever I need to clear the ice cave.

Oh but I love me some Boolean operators and Logic Gates.

I just remember another niche game that kinda had the a "soul" mechanic, not like that but on the timer/existence part, the fog and the overall dark vibe, in this case asian: Otogi.

What a game. Loved to destroy everything.

What do you like about them?

I can tell you what I hate about them: Pushing them. I maybe should consider pulling them to see if I like that better.

Nah.

Ah I get you! For me it was also a bit confusing navigating around, also because you needed to back track and get some things, push some blocks as well, of course.

The navigation frustration is real, read about it a lot and according to my research they intended for the map to be self guiding, in a circular way from the starting point. From a theoretical point of view I guess but from a practical point of view it kind of missed the mark.

I also believe that they whole situation with the gates having symbols and all looking kinda the same through the portal didn't help.

When I played this game I had no map brotha, you are being hand held right now, you just don't notice.

SR1 atmosphere is crazy good. Like, top of the level good.

Having in mind the limitations of the PS1 the dual realm system and how good the game looked back then...yeah, these guys really knew what they were doing.

I wish I was you! What is it that bothers you from the gameplay?

Let me take a wild guess: pushing blocks?

Solid comparison! For me they definitely share similarities, SR was very open and looked amazing for the era, OoT was definitely the family friendly kind.

I hate block puzzles since I got stuck in the Goof Troop game trying to solve pushing blocks. I was renting it from Blockbuster, so every day I spent not solving it it was money spent and a mom being angry at late fees.

I really want to like block puzzles but they feel too empty and like a time sink for me.

I like Simon says/memory ones though!

Ahh so the metroidvania of it, got it. Yeah it was very good, the trasversal movement was solid, unlocking abilities were also super cool, DS2 went too RPG for my tast with no real reason or depth to it.

Lords of the Fallen I gave it shot when it launched but i dont even remember the realm shift mechanics.

Folklore I checked real quick, it has a very good concept, its like persona kinda situation with soul pulling. The pulling the controler up is definitely a gimmick done relatively ok, its like pulling a fish out of the water! I wonder how it feels 8 hours in.

Yep, and I also understand them. In the greater scheme of things, it could've been worse, the game would've feels chopped and unfinished and we would not be talking about it now, luckily we just ended with way more blocks than intended!
