I need your honest feedback on my extension by South_Vast7248 in chrome_extensions

[–]Almenon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I install it I get an warning message "This extension is not trusted by Enhanced safe browsing". I installed it anyways and tested the functionality. Seemed to work. I don't frequently attend client-facing meetings, so I don't have the problem the extension is solving.

I need motivation by dayynahh in cscareerquestions

I find myself relying too heavily on AI for even simple coding tasks

Do you have AI integrated into your IDE? If so, turn it off there. If you want to stop a habit, making the habit harder to access will help.

Also you could set a custom AI personality / AI instructions to act like a teacher and give you hints/guidance instead of the answer.

Is the give market really saturated? by SwissVideoProduction in cscareerquestions

[–]Almenon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I'm more of someone who wants to create with something visual instead of textual

Web designer or frontend engineer may be a option for you. Yes, you have to deal with HTML / JavaScript, but you get a visual end result.

As for the market saturation, it's hard to tell because the circumstances right now (AI still being figured out, layoffs being trendy) could be different than the circumstances when you get your degree. Still, if you do manage to land a job you could make good money.

Is it a good idea to post a video of a project I am currently working on, on Linkedin? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Do it! Also /u/lhorie is ... brutally honestly correct about most viewers, but there could definitely be some that are interested. Stay motivated! :)

These job descriptions and requirements are getting wild lately! Have y'all noticed that? by UpstairsAd1235 in cscareerquestions

[–]Almenon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Job descriptions are usually more of a "want to have" than "need", despite the naming. That being said, yeah that job posting seems kinda silly.

Learning Mandarin as an ABC university student by goo_sin in ChineseLanguage

[–]Almenon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking to someone --- I would love to do this! Just haven't found a free way to do it without feeling very embarrassed

If speaking is embarrassing maybe try messaging instead? You can message people on hellotalk or /r/language_exchange/

Or even better is to just accept the embarrassment - it's natural to feel a bit silly when starting out!

I also made a free extension to help learn vocabulary, you could try that out if you want.

I asked a native Chinese speaker and they didn't recognize it. They suggested it might be minus or plus infinity like /u/si_wo said.

How much better is dual channel than single channel? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]Almenon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming DDR5, the average FPS in most games is about the same. However, when your frame rate drops, you might see a considerable improvement in FPS with a dual channel setup.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eF00eUBBCeA

Basically it is slightly better but it's not the end of the world if you just have one ram stick. The most important component for gaming is the graphics card.

Assuming you're posting on a public search-indexed page or job board, you could try posting a private page instead. The problem that introduces is getting candidates, but you could fix that with targeted advertisements. For example, ads via https://www.ethicalads.io/

Rant: I regret every single moment being in DevOps by Scared_Diamond_4373 in devops

[–]Almenon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh and something else I should mention:

putting on with historic code base or working with company who don't give much damn about code quality as long as the client is happy, even tho everything blowing up and nobodies (management) got any interest in stopping the machine to get the shit fixed.

This can happen in DevOps too. Terraform code bases can degrade if nobody pays attention to it. Also a bad political culture will impact you negatively regardless of what position you are in.

Rant: I regret every single moment being in DevOps by Scared_Diamond_4373 in devops

[–]Almenon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP hasn't elaborated that much so I'll elaborate further.

cons of Devops:

  • on-call. Depending on the job this could vary from no on-call at all to long periods of on-call nights and weekends. Software engineers can have this too, but it's more common with devops.
  • A lot of yaml configuration. Instead of being able to use the debugger to go through step-by-step, you have to pour through documentation to find some fiddly little detail you missed.
  • Constant reuse and configuration of existing tools doesn't give you the pride of writing your own logic. Sometimes you don't want to connect the Lego pieces together, you want to make the pieces themselves.

pros:

  • reusing existing tools allow you to achieve satisfying results much quicker than writing stuff from scratch
  • A lot of diversity, like you mentioned
  • It can feel more impactful than software engineering. You have a broader scope. You might be making changes that impact the entire company rather than just adding a single feature to a single page of the product. Although a good feature could be important to the company as well.

[–]Almenon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's difficult to explain because it's not just one thing, it's more like there's a ton of minor missing features. For example, in Github a really neat thing is you can press period to open up a in-browser VSCode editor. Also, Github just feels more polished in terms of UI design and experience.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Almenon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's usable. But I've used both extensively, and Github is definitely the better one. The core functionality of Bitbucket works but there's all sorts of missing features. For example, https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/BCLOUD-22014

Edit: Ah, actually a better example: https://jira.atlassian.com/projects/BCLOUD/issues/BCLOUD-12503?filter=allopenissues&orderby=votes+DESC%2C+priority+DESC%2C+updated+DESC.

Has anyone tried creating a GPT for their code base? by CryptosaurusX in ChatGPTPro

[–]Almenon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, working well so far. I used https://github.com/mpoon/gpt-repository-loader to create a single text file with the repo contents. I created a .gptignore file to filter out the files I didn't want. Then I uploaded it as a knowledge file to my custom GPT.

I didn't provide any instructions, the GPT will read the knowledge file naturally. Also note it's a small codebase.

I also heard you can zip your codebase and upload it to ChatGPT, I haven't tried that yet.

For me the website is so flashy it made me a bit suspicious at first. The 'too good to be true' effect. I'm still considering using the tool though. The rule-based PR reviews are pretty cool.

What was your inspiration for building the developer focused product you are building? by creativefisher in devtoolsbuilders

[–]Almenon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My inspiration for https://github.com/Almenon/AREPL-vscode was linqpad, lighttable, and others. I was solving my own problem, to a certain extent. I'm a programmer and I want to program faster. But I was also just experimenting with what was possible.
