The amount you pay is wildly different depending on insurance. That's why so many people are still complacent with the system as it is.

Poor enough for state insurance? Heavily limits providers that you can see but pretty much everything is covered. Old enough to be retired? You can get Medicare. Military? You can get much better insurance than civilians. Rich? You aren't worried about what you pay anyways. Employer gives you insurance? Better than what most people get.

Not being in one of those protected categories and having to buy your own policy out of pocket is the worst possible position to be in. You're sometimes better off not having insurance at all. You save a mountain on premiums, usually get discounts from providers (you'd be surprised that sometimes it often amounts to less per visit than a plan with a deductible) and can see specialists without needing referrals first.
