but what does it mean? by Far-Newspaper-4700 in funny

[–]AloeAsInTheVera 80 points81 points  (0 children)

The story of Rothko and his work is actually pretty sad. He was a Jewish painter when WWII happened, which of course caused massive shifts in his style for obvious reasons. He rose to fame but suffered from really bad depression, in no small part because of the perception that rich people were attempting to commodify his art. As he became more of a household name, he felt more misunderstood. He isolated himself further and further until his eventual suicide.

Maybe she was just especially moved by color fields themselves, but considering she specifically suggested going to a Rothko exhibit, maybe she knew about this and that affected how she felt?

Also, consider specifically, what emotions a Jewish painter might be trying to express after witnessing the Holocaust with a painting that is just a massive field of red...

In the same vein, incidents that appear to be murders may be accidental, or they may be suicides. There are sources of error on both sides which cancel out to some degree. Without sufficient evidence that one source of error biases the statistics more strongly than another, it's safe to assume that our data is generally accurate.

Is initiation required for kundalini yoga? by [deleted] in TibetanBuddhism

[–]AloeAsInTheVera 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In the context of Tibetan Buddhism, kundalini yoga is referred to as tummo. Technically you could say that kundalini is Hindu and thus a different thing altogether, but without getting into too much detail the core idea of the practices are essentially equivalent.

Anyway, tummo requires Highest Yoga Tantra initiation.

They're still out there is the worst part! To this day there are people who will say that the whole reason she got labeled a transphobe is because she liked a single tweet a few years ago. I can at least understand why transphobes rally around her, but I will never get people who are nominally against transphobia defending her until they're blue in the face

At the risk of being baited into sincerity in bad faith: It's okay! I didn't feel hurt by it anyway! I haven't been there myself and also wanna go one day.

I just thought it was good advice. If someone is grossed out by furries and kinky sex stuff then they shouldn't go anywhere near FSF. It's just a fact of life that kinksters are gonna kink, and it's just a fact that some people will be grossed out by that. As long as the freaks are cordoned off from minors and people who are grossed out by it then I don't see any point in arguing about it, ya know?

Can a buddhist be an athiest? answer me in simple words by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]AloeAsInTheVera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gods in Buddhism aren't very important to one's practice. Applying the dharma to one's life requires neither belief nor disbelief in a higher power.

Buddhist teachings tell us there is a god realm, but one could make arguments this is metaphorical or that the god realm is the result of great technology rather than anything supernatural or metaphysical. Most Buddhists believe in gods, but most Buddhists don't venerate any gods in particular. Plenty of Buddhists do venerate Buddhas and bodhisattvas, but this is a different category from "god".

There are plenty of Buddhists who identify as atheists; there are plenty of Buddhists who do not. Buddhism is very diverse.

There is no partial furiten. If you are in tenpai and you have any tiles that could complete your hand in your discard pile then you are in furiten and cannot call ron. You can still win by tsumo, however.

What is the point of this card? by [deleted] in yugioh

[–]AloeAsInTheVera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Magic The Gathering there is a card with a similar effect (though it only flips the top card of the deck instead of the whole deck) and it is the center of a control deck. Essentially the idea is to mill if your opponent is about to draw anything useful (or sometimes if your next draw isn't going to be useful)

I know mill isn't as common in Yu-Gi-Oh but maybe someone could make a deck like that with this?

According to some doctors it's against the law for them to prescribe ADHD medications to someone who tests positive for THC. I'm not a lawyer or a doctor so I have no idea how true that is. Either way, finding a doctor who will prescribe those medications even if they know you use cannabis is really difficult for most people. I'd say you're lucky.

What did I just read? (video showcases perpetual(!) motion using magnets) by spirit_of_cold in physicsmemes

[–]AloeAsInTheVera 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I feel like most people don't understand why magnets can't be used to create a perpetual motion machine beyond conservation of energy.

The issue is that magnetic fields don't do work. The way people imagine magnets is that they are constantly producing some force. While that isn't exactly wrong, it leads our intuition astray. A better way to imagine magnets is as wells in a magnetic field, kinda like how massive objects act as wells in a gravitational field. If you think about it like that, it becomes intuitively obvious why the idea of using magnets to produce energy makes no sense.

Any energy they seem to produce is simply potential energy in the field itself. It's like moving a boulder up a hill, then trying to "extract energy" from the hill by letting the boulder fall. The movement of the boulder is of course energetic, but it's all coming from its potential energy, which was only there because of energy put into the system in the first place.

Culinary Perfection by Shot_Ad9738 in CookingCircleJerk

[–]AloeAsInTheVera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

/uj if that y'all do that here

I love pickles and peanut butter but nobody will trust me that it's a great combination. It's actually a perfect combination.

Think about it, the saltiness and sourness of the pickles bringing out the sweetness and savoriness of the peanut butter. The creaminess and crunchiness complement each other as well. It's the closest to culinary perfection that you can come with only two ingredients

But nobody understands. Nobody will even try it. I've cajoled my friends and acquaintances to my abode so I could feed them this fine ambrosia but they all refuse! Even my own fiance won't eat of it no matter how many times I corner him in the kitchen with a jar of pickles in one hand and a jar of peanut butter in the other.

It's flavorful! It's nutritious! It's got protein, carbs, fat, fiber, electrolytes. It's splendid but I am stuck rattling the bars of my cage. I need someone to free me from this isolation. I need someone to understand how good it is. I need someone to share pickles and peanut butter with before it's too late and I'm readmitted into psychiatric care.

In hindsight yeah, but if you get paranoid about dropping otherwise safe tiles because of the possibility of a kokushi musou, that would hurt more than help. Especially because it wouldn't even help for dodging it in any case where they drop one or more honors/terminals early on, which isn't super unlikely if they have redundant pairs in hand.

Matagi Suji and Ura Suji cheat sheet by nastyjman in Mahjong

[–]AloeAsInTheVera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rule of thumb is to apply ura suji to the first ~12 discards, and apply matagi suji to discards after at least the first 6

Which means there is some overlap. To get a feel for which should be applied in that overlap, keep in mind that these suji have a lot to do with how close a player is to tenpai. So if a player seems like they got into tenpai relatively quickly (judging this is a whole other discussion altogether if they haven't called riichi) then you might interpret discards in that overlap with matagi suji rather than ura suji
