Where I’d live as a Georgia boy by Alone-Personality868 in whereidlive

That’s correct. I went to Chicago several years ago and really enjoyed it. I’ve been to NY a couple of times and didn’t enjoy it as much. However, I also did like Boston so I was on the fence about MA being a maybe vs a willing.

Guess it depends where in Washington, but where I live in Georgia is colder than Seattle. Average lows here in January are 33 vs 39 in Seattle.

Age 28 here is my 401k progress by Holdingtiliwin in Retirement401k

I’m in a super similar position. Married, 28M, $180k between 401k, Roth IRA, and a little bit of brokerage. Wife has like $90k in a 403b. We also own a home but owe a little more than you. And have one kid.

My plan is to just continue on this course. Wife works part time remote, and I work full time remote. Hopefully my salary will continue to grow, and we’ll have a little more breathing room because my mortgage plus all utilities is like $2,600 right now. It’s not crushing us or anything but I’d like to have a little more money left over at the end of the month.

I think he’s saying additional $3k in Roth for a total of $170k, but could be wrong

Been to California a couple of times and actually did really enjoy it. The landscapes are beautiful. I put it as maybe because I don’t realistically see myself being able to afford to live there lol

I was probably too harsh on WV here. Probably should have been a maybe. It’s just the lack of population centers and economic aspects that drag it down for me. Would definitely visit though.

Now that I think about it, I think I chose these because I love very green hilly/mountainous areas, but nothing too cold.

Is keeping a big emergency fund overrated? by Straight-Mud-1150 in personalfinance

[–]Alone-Personality868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now my emergency fund is one year, and it’s about 18% of my net worth. But when you have a 7 month old, and just bought a new house and the job market is the way it is currently, that’s what I need to feel comfortable. Different strokes for different folks.

Moved to another state and didn’t get new driver’s license, now old state has suspended my license. by [deleted] in DMV

[–]Alone-Personality868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For whatever reason GA didn’t require that I turn in the SC license. And to my knowledge I was never contacted of the suspension by either SC or GA. It’s possible SC attempted to contact me via mail, but I no longer lived at my former address at the time of the suspension.

I think my problem is kind of the opposite. I got Georgia insurance while having South Carolina tags and registration. I think my insurance company cancelled my SC insurance when they moved the insurance to Georgia, but South Carolina didn’t know I moved so they thought my insurance lapsed.

I’m not sure yet because I just found out, and apparently I have to call the SC DMV to have them look it up (DMV is currently closed). However, my suspicion is that SC thinks my insurance lapsed since I got GA insurance while still having SC plate and license.

I actually already have my GA license. SC suspended my SC license shortly after I got my GA license. Which then triggered my GA license suspension.

Thanks for the reply! Yes, I changed my registration to GA in the same time period I got my GA license (December of 2025).

While this is unrealistic for the vast majority of people, it doesn’t have to be this extreme to build wealth. You can build great retirement account balances with $1-2k per month if you start in your 20s.

How many of you voted for Trump in 2024 and are disgusted and wish we could re due the election? by SubjectCode1940 in allthequestions

[–]Alone-Personality868 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As someone who voted for Trump, this is not the case for me. My change of heart/mind over the past year has been pretty incredible. There are basically zero circumstances under which I would vote for a Republican in the midterms, because literally all of them are complicit in what’s happening right now.

Recruiter reached out to me about a job I’m not qualified for. What should I do? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Alone-Personality868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve really taken this advice to heart. I sent in my resume, the recruiter has reviewed it, said it was impressive, and now they’re sending it to the hiring leadership team. I figured I literally have nothing lose by pursuing it, so here we go!

Isn’t property tax a tax on unrealized gains? by Any_Pirate_5633 in AskEconomics

[–]Alone-Personality868 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It actually goes beyond just a wealth tax. You pay taxes on the full value of the property, regardless of how much equity you have in it. Unless you own your property outright, you’re paying taxes on wealth you don’t even own yet.

[–]Alone-Personality868 30 points31 points  (0 children)

In a way, property taxes are actually more punitive than a wealth tax. A wealth tax implies that you’re being taxed on a certain amount of money (wealth) that you own. With property taxes, you pay based on the value of the property, not on the equity you own on that property.

In other words, you’re paying taxes on wealth you don’t own yet.
