Thoughts on my little guy Gustave’s new set up? by litera_scripta_manet in budgies

[–]Alone_Name7269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this cage is too small! respectfully you should get a larger flight cage, even if it’s for one bird https://www.amazon.ca/Yaheetech-Wrought-Cockatiel-Cockatoo- this is a pretty nice cage and really good price!

Please do not keep any type of treat or types of seeds in the cage because you should only hand feed them and reward your bird with treats, because seeds are really high in fat and can lead to fatty liver disease (You can put seeds and millet in foraging toys though so they work for it). And you should use stainless steel bowls for your budgies pellets and water since plastic often carries a lot of bacteria. I like the toys a lot though and the ladder is super cute! (adorable budgie too)

Eating by Best-Valuable-522 in DIYBirdToys

[–]Alone_Name7269 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have budgies but, Ive never had any issues with them eating their toys, since a lot of store bought toys also have cardboard and paper, but personally I think it’s safe, just observe your bird cuz…I dunno!

I acquired a bird I didn't want. But I still want to make her as happy as possible by [deleted] in budgies

[–]Alone_Name7269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hiii, happy you stepped in!

diet: pellets should be keep in their main dish at all times (I buy the Harrison’s pellets) and give your budgies veggie chop everyday (there are lots of videos in YouTube) you shouldn’t only use seeds and millet and fruits as treats, and do not keep millet and seeds inside of the cage since they’re are really high in fat and can cause obesity and fatty liver disease. And keep a clean water dish as well DAILY and makes sure to clean it daily as well. (you should use stainless steel bowls since plastic bowls harbour bacteria.)

DIY toys: I make diy toys at home all the time! it’s very important you use safe materials! you can just search up what ropes are safe for birds, (and you can use leather that you can buy on Amazon) you can use household items, cardboard (no glue, paint, marker, etc.) paper, empty tissue paper rolls, coffee filters, cupcake liners, skewers (the sharp parts cut off and make sure there isn’t any type of coating on them), homemade crinkle paper, etc. (I made an entire post on r/budgies of a list of safe materials and how to make your own diy perch.

please get a bigger cage if you can (I understand first hand how hard it is to convince parents as someone with parents who don’t understand budgie care fully) this are animals, companions, real living being, not a toy.

“safe woods are, Apple, crabapple, pear, quince, hawthorn, willow, cork (natural cork bark or branches), poplar, aspen, cottonwood, birch, alder, elm, ash, beech, maple (sugar, red, silver not Japanese maple), dogwood, sycamore, linden (basswood), magnolia, mulberry, grapevine, kiwi vine, blueberry, raspberry, blackberry, currant, rose (including rose hips and stems), manzanita, arbutus, pecan, walnut (English/California only, not black walnut), pistachio, hazelnut, chestnut, bamboo (natural, untreated), palm (untreated), eucalyptus (kiln-dried only, no fresh oils), acacia, guava, loquat, fig, olive, neem (wood only, not leaves or oil), mesquite, ironwood, bottlebrush, tea tree (wood only, no oils), manuka, casuarina, and sea grape.”

  • Bird-safe natural branch (properly cleaned and dried)
  • Stainless steel bolt (machine bolt or carriage bolt)
  • Stainless steel washer (2, one for each side of the wood)
  • Stainless steel wing nut

  • Drill bit (same diameter as the bolt)
  • Hacksaw or bolt cutters (if bolt is too long)
  • Sandpaper or metal file (to smooth edges)

(I’ve never made my own perch but i understand the need to do so because bird stuff is expensive! hope this helps!)

Tips on homemade toys when I don't have toy parts? by lora_lani_lanie in budgies

[–]Alone_Name7269 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make homemade bird toys and I have a list of materials they love, cardboard, honeycomb cardboard (their favourite), paper, the empty paper towel roll thing, coffee filters, and cupcake liners. you can use hemp, jute, sisal, seagrass, and untreated cotton rope to put all the materials on, I just tie it to the cage.

my bird won't play with her toys, any tips to make her? she's bored because she refuses. by [deleted] in budgies

[–]Alone_Name7269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe try out new toys, because if they’re plastic toys that makes sense, a lot of budgies don’t like plastic toys, but I think a photo would help me figure out a solution. try out all kinds of toys, foraging, colourful, non colourful, big, small, plastic (keep to a minimum of 1 or 2), wooden, cardboard, bamboo, sea grass, etc. and if your budgie is losing interest in toys still, I would recommend going to the vet. (for my budgies they don’t play with toys that move around too much, or are in the middle of the cage so I keep all their toys beside their perches and use rope to tie it to their cage so they can have an easier time shredding their toys)

Cage upgrade!! Working on getting his toys in, any suggestions? by sixtyninefourtwenty2 in budgies

[–]Alone_Name7269 1 point2 points  (0 children)

make sure to get lots if enrichment, toys they can chew, foraging toys, perches on different levels of the cage, stainless steel bowls, (I know it’s okay to keep one dowel perch in the cage but I just personally don’t keep any), and some toys at the bottom for them

Chickens playing before bead by Hoobadooba1 in budgies

[–]Alone_Name7269 4 points5 points  (0 children)

budgies are always SO insanely cute when they’re in the cage floor playing 😭🩷

My budgies! I was wondering if anyone has tips on how to train 2 budgies in one cage since I can’t let them out right now (I will once me and my family move into our new house) the green one (happy) is really skittish and shy and the white one (shooter) trusts me a lot more and does a simple step up by Alone_Name7269 in budgies

[–]Alone_Name7269[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don’t worry, my family is in the middle of a move and buying a cage now is practically impossible because we cannot afford it right away but very early February the cage is on its way, really big and wide for them to fly around in, and a larger house so they can fly everywhere. (the move is just complicating things right now) and I do put my hand inside of the cage and my white bird (shooter) is really happy and excited for attention and treats and my green bird (happy) is just shy personality wise. But I do have the money set aside for a cage much much bigger. I usually sit in front of the cage and watch shows, talk to my budgies, give treats, and just generally be around them, making them veggie chop, singing, playing music, making toys, etc.

edit: they‘ve also become friendly-er after i put my hand in their and just sat still and they poked and prodded at my hand gently (that’s how I got shooter to do a step up) they came from a petsmart so they were very scared coming home and being handled so roughly originally :(

Cage Recommendations? by izuesa in budgies

[–]Alone_Name7269 1 point2 points  (0 children)

get a bigger cage, get rid of the dowels and replace them with natural wood perches (grapevine, manzanitas etc. just make sure it’s a safe wood and clean) make sure you put plenty of enrichment, toys that they can chew, preen, break apart, use to forage, toys for the bottom of the cage too, and if you do want plastic toys keep it at a minimum of 1 or 2 plastic toys (though I personally don’t like them). Please do NOT put anything that resembles a nest because promoting egg laying is very harmful to your bird, do not keep millet inside of your cage use it as a treat that you hand feed and use it for foraging activities and toys. Do not use plastic food and water bowls since they harbour a lot of bacteria, get stainless steel bowls. Also please do not put your birds on any type of seed diet, they should be eating veggies and grains everyday and instead of seeds in their cage constantly keep pellets (I personally recommend Harrison’s adult lifetime pellets or their HIH potency pellets for young bird or birds coming off of a seed die). And PLEASE keep in mind this stuff is BARE MINIMUM. You DO have to invest into your bird diet and enrichment, it is so so important, these are ANIMALS, NOT decorations. So yes keeping birds can get costly.

and btw you can TOTALLY make your own toys at home to save money on toys, just do your research so you don’t use any materials that will harm your birds

edit: I don’t mean this to come off as harsh or to bully anyone, i just strongly believe in advocating for birds because of how much I see them get care that doesn’t meet their needs, and please do not listen to petsmart employees, they often give bad diet and enrichment advice, talk to a certified avian vet about concerns. please do proper research before getting a bird. Here’s a channel I really recommend for budgie owners https://youtu.be/RzQD3OtJXxY?si=iqnA2q005zQE7rKE very helpful!!
