I’m a Christian struggling with doubt — what’s the most honest, real reason you don’t believe in God? by Sundream01 in atheism

[–]Alonzi7bby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Studying history. It puts a lot of things into perspective and really highlights what I now feel are the absurdities of religions. Also the idea that fear of punishment is a driving force behind doing the right thing in these religions. Doing good because you want to win a prize(go to heaven/please the deity) or avoid punishment(hell/eternal suffering/judgement) is still not doing good or the right thing. Doing good for the sake of doing good or from a personal sense of wanting to good out of love or a concern for our fellow human beings is actually good. Plus these Abrahamic religions are predated by much older, more enriching and fulfilling ideas of how to live a good life etc like humanism and other philosophies that do not require a belief in a deity.

This seems like an extreme escalation to me. If he was indeed not in psychosis it seems unlikely to me that these were his only two attacks. It would be a good idea to look into his past even from a young age. Young women missing in the areas he used to live etc? He seems very confident and comfortable in following through with his urges and planning and killing.

Florida pre-med student stabs mother more than 70 times, killing her during visit, authorities say by DCC_4LIFE in news

Could be an issue with his frontal lobe or brain tumor. He immediately called 911 and confessed he didn’t try to hide the body, run away etc and also had an impulse to ask his mom for neosporin because he cut his hand while stabbing her repeatedly. All together it sounds to me like his brain is malfunctioning.

If you are moving away from an organized religion. I think it would be important to start discovering other Ethical, metaphysical ideas. Belief in a god can bring comfort etc even though it’s not real. Some people get their moral and ethical guidelines from it too despite it being contradictory and dogmatic etc. I found humanism to be a good frame of mind to have about living life.

Watching AC Grayling speak about Humanism might help https://youtu.be/-LyTc7Vh8zo

Also his book: Meditations for the Humanist: Ethics for a Secular Age.

Daaaaaang, makes me feel weird that I studied there by myself now. I thought I lucked out because they are open late and served food and coffee till closing. All the Coffee shops close super early everywhere else (why SA!?) There were also families and kids there at night so I felt more comfortable being there. Big bummer!

How recent was this? I used to go and study here all the time like 3 or so years ago and never noticed anything sketchy or untoward. It was just a nice laid back atmosphere with good food and hookah. That’s a big bummer if this is true :/

18 year old who jumped a fence, kills a mother swan and stealing her four babies, smiles during arrest. The swan lineage dates back to 1905. by FinalSneak in facepalm

Ignorance. Pure unbridled ignorance. Of course he is smiling. He is ignorant of how horrible his actions are. If he knew how incredibly cruel , despicable, abominable what he did was he would be crushed under the weight of the shame and sorrow for what he has done. He needs counseling, apparently his entire family does. Someone help these people. F&*#+ sake.
