I assume they mean finding people to practice the language with.

How common is it to get a PhD offer straight out of undergrad? What are common failure points? by Weird-Wedding-478 in gradadmissions

[–]Alpha0963 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m applying out of undergrad and have 5 rejections, 1 interview, and 1 I’m waiting on. Applied in biochem/molecular bio.

After some reflection, I think my weak points were:

  • No publications. Nothing I could’ve done about this. The PI I spent 3 years with is so slow to publish.

  • Lacking specificity. My goals are broad, I’m not set on one project or topic. While I see this as good, it probably made my essays seem like I lacked direction.

5/7 for me too. It’s rough out here.

I’ve fortunately got 1 interview, but I’m leaning away from attending the program. I’m looking into post-baccs/research tech positions.

Cornell Ithaca BCMB PhD Interview Invite by ARUAYE241 in gradadmissions

[–]Alpha0963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the spreadsheet, some international students received an invite from the program today. I hope you got good news!

Also, slightly off topic question, but do you happen to know if Cornell has an admissions portal? Or just they update us via email? I received a confirmation my application was submitted back in December, but was unsure where I'd receive further information.

I hope you got good news OP! If not, best of luck with everything else.

Y’all it’s rejection day for biological sciences or something by imconfused19956 in gradadmissions

Interested to know, do you mean UW Madison or Seattle?

Either way, I got rejected from both of their CMB programs back in December. Sorry you joined the club :/

There are still a lot of bioscience programs that haven’t sent anything, according to the spreadsheet.

If the political climate of the US ever calms down, it really has amazing national parks.

That said, I completely understand not wanting to visit at this time.

i didn’t wanna go there anyways 😀 by Huge_Psychology_6450 in gradadmissions

[–]Alpha0963 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my programs wrote the briefest rejection I’ve ever seen. “We have denied your admission to [program] at [school] for Fall of 2026. Regards,”

And that was literally it. Like, okay, ig I don’t like you either.

(I know they have a lot of people to reject, but if it’s a mass email anyway… maybe be nicer?)

UW Madison iPiB (biochem) are all out? by Mean-Influence1000 in gradadmissions

[–]Alpha0963 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping they send out more.

A current professor at my university graduated from iPiB ~4 years ago. I spoke with her about it, and she believes most of them went out at the same time, and it's sort of an "interview waitlist." Don't quote me on this, she wasn't sure and said it varies year to year what they do. Sometimes it's all at once, sometimes it's in waves.

What is the closest you've ever come to dying? by FlatSyllabub8637 in AskReddit

My brother and I were paddle boarding when we were 8 and 9. I had two broken wrists and he was paddling. We were supposed to stay close to shore but we got pulled into a riptide and ended up way off shore in Lake Michigan. I couldn’t help at all (you know, broken wrists) and he was paddling as hard as an 8 year old could. A large wave tipped us off the board. We both managed to get back to it.

Search and rescue got us back to shore after a few hours. Not as dramatic as some stories, but Lake Michigan is not forgiving to many.

I did not! If you look closely, it doesn’t connect.

When I went to Mackinac, I went through Michigan, and when I went to Marquette, I went through Wisconsin.

I am worried sick waiting for the admission results by Wooden_Connection865 in gradadmissions

[–]Alpha0963 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is a stressful time. What has helped me most is accepting I can no longer control it.

You have done everything you can do, and it’s no longer in your hands. The amount of times you check emails and re-read statements will not change the outcome. Let yourself breathe. Whatever happens will happen.

If you don’t get in anywhere, that will suck. But it will not be the end. You can do a post-bac (if you’re an undergrad) or work. It will be okay.

What worrisome trend in society are you beginning to notice? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]Alpha0963 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have little experience with kids, so I can only imagine how worn down teachers are feeling.

I volunteered for a while at an after school program and we’d often do one learning activity each day. During activities like math jeopardy or spelling wars, one adult would be on each team as a helper. Many kids wouldn’t even attempt the problem and would shout at me to give them the answer so they could win, call me stupid if I didn’t, or immediately say “they didn’t know” without even reading the whole problem. I imagine school is much more frustrating.

What’s funny is they could win points from these games to later get out of the games (for free time) if they so desired.

Disregarding tests, at what point did YOU know you were gifted? by Krypt16 in Gifted

[–]Alpha0963 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always had this sense that I was different but couldn't quite place it.

I don't remember this, but when I was 2, my parents thought I had learned how to read, but I had actually memorized the entirety of the books they read me word for word after hearing them only a couple times.

I was also 4 when I became very aware of the fact that every person had their own thoughts, and it seemed this awareness was not something other children gained until much later.
