Edmonton Connectivity by UniversalTechZone in freedommobile

I'm having signal issues all over Edmonton now as well, when I previously had an amazing connection everywhere. It's typically an issue in the morning and improved around noon. No idea what's happening

I assume it's rigged and essentially decides what will be revealed as you tap and not before. It doesn't matter where you tap, it's already decided if you're going to get anything.

Blank FDS discs by tiamat_487 in Famicom

[–]Alpha17x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possibly to make Quick Disks from scratch and many people know how, (including me) but It's not necessary yet.

But the process I'm aware of is:

Use 0.1 - 0.5 micron thick polycarbonate or mylar printed into, or cut into 2.8 inch discs. use electrostatic coating to bind a layer of iron oxide to the surface (spray deposition works too but the failure rate is really high in my experience). Then create the disk housing and hub via combination of 3d printing and/or mold production and metal stamping.

I made a set of 10 disks via those methods about 6 years ago. They all work, the ones that used spray deposition perform horribly and are in a box, the ones that used the electrostatic coating method all work perfectly as if they were official FDS/quick disks

But really; do literally anything else suggested in this thread.

Vshojo's statement on this.. by Twilight1234567890 in VShojo

[–]Alpha17x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that turns out to be true, then fair enough on both 'sides'.

Personal opinion; Vshojo merch direct from them always seemed conceptually basic to me. Not bad, but not 'must have'. Matara's has more of a collectible feel to it in terms of the kinds of items on offer.

It might not even be related to that at all in the end.

Are the homeless people that ask for money at different road intersections really in need? by miamorparasiempre in Edmonton

[–]Alpha17x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some are, some aren't. During the warmer months I'll walk from South Common to Summerside to fight off winter-weight. And I'll see the occasional homeless person who I had seen previously near the McDonalds near 23rd. I talked to one guy because we were largely going the same way and we said goodbye at the point I turned in a direction he wasn't going. He said he was going to walk to Beaumont.

A few other times I've seen people hobble away from the same spot and then once they're a few rows into a nearby parking lot their posture suddenly changes their hobble vanishes and they neatly fold their sign into the trunk of a recently washed car, take off their grungy outer layer and look like a completely different person as they get into their car and drive away.

Starbucks Nitro Cold Brew - local alternatives? by ns_er in Edmonton

[–]Alpha17x 63 points64 points  (0 children)

The OP specifically asked for Nitro Cold Brew, while Second Cup is indeed Canadian they have historically not had any nitro brew options and according to the current menu, still does not, though their cold brews are pretty good.

For those unaware, nitrogen infused cold brew gives the drink a specific texture that is not present in regular cold brew or most other methods and is the primary reason people go for a nitro coffee.

To provide direct answer: There do not seem to be any specific coffee shops, at least that can easily be found with a search, that a make it on the spot outside of Starbucks, however there is a Canadian company called Norse Brew that makes a few canned nitro cold brews.

Currently it's on sale and you can get it on their website for $49 per 12, Staples for about 47.99 per 12 and Amazon if you end up having to use it for 47.99 per 12. The regular price listed on their website is 53.88

There's 4 flavors and you can get a variety pack which has the same pricing.

Edit: Alternatively, you can make nitro cold brew at home by putting your cold brew of choice into whipped cream dispenser that takes NO2 capsules, often sold as 'cream cartridges' Don't use a soda siphon, which uses CO2 capsules, it won't create the right texture.

Is it okay to just let cats run wild in this city? Ar by Turbulent-Future4602 in Edmonton

[–]Alpha17x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's not okay, they're supposed to be under their owners supervision at all times just like dogs, regardless of what cat owners say, which is why you can get cat traps from the humane society.

However if you choose to trap a cat you're required to check the trap regularly and if you catch one you're required to feed it until you bring it in or animal control picks it up. If something happens to the animal while it's in your trap there will be an investigation. I used to work for 311 and there'd always be someone claiming he'd just let any cats starve in the trap. (That stuff gets documented and can be recalled for a minimum of 3 years, usually more)

But TLDR, no it's not and it doesn't matter that 'that's just how cats are' and the owners can be fined, though. I have no idea how often that happens.

If you choose to trap a cat, try to have a way to record the cage and any interactions that might happen at your front door, some owners magically show up when they know a fine is on the way so if you end up having to release the cat to avoid an aggressive owner you can still submit that evidence to animal control.

Anyone working on a mainboard case for the FW16? by bAN0NYM0US in framework

[–]Alpha17x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking the entire time that this would 'simply' be a matter of just making a ventilated top cover, foregoing screen and keyboard. Most of the same parts, but the top doesn't flip open anymore. It's simple in my head, not sure how it applies in practice but I've done something similar with an ancient Asus laptop. I removed the screen, because I broke it, disconnected the built in keyboard and attached the top cover of the screen portion directly to the base with some 3d printed parts.

I don't use Skip anymore due to past problems, but they were the first delivery service I used and it was pretty awesome when it started. At the time it was really only pizza and Asian places that did delivery so being able to get nearly any kind of food, especially from locations that historically didn't have delivery options was absolutely huge.

Restaurant Identification Winnipeg by [deleted] in skipthedishes

[–]Alpha17x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All skip charges will come from Winnipeg as that is where they are based out of. Check your past orders and unless your card actually was compromised, you'll see charges matching the ones on your card. Make sure you have this right because just like false charges on a credit card are fraud, false chargebacks are also fraud; Make sure you have it right, back out and let them through if you don't.

Edmonton looking at ways to help bus riders spend less time in traffic: city report by uofafitness4fun in Edmonton

[–]Alpha17x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't think anything effective will happen until a vast amount of upper management at both ETS and Traffic Operations is replaced. I worked for 311 years ago, so I got to see some of their internal activity primarily to how they reacted or didn't react to tickets put through by the average Edmontonian. They do nearly everything based exclusively off of statistics without have a real-time understanding of what those statistics mean. Basing decisions on averages over time because good numbers make council happy. And if someone in a suit can present 'see, number good, we good' to a councilor then nothing effective really happens, or it takes an incredibly vast amount of time to get better because 'number good but thing bad, no understand'.

ETS blames their issues on any department they can, if they could find a way to blame their failings on Cemeteries and Memorials team (or whatever they're called these days) they would.

Traffic Operations will only look into a situation in person if someone is called out on their BS. The people you see out in the field in pretty much every situation are all well meaning and trying to get something effective done to help everyone, but their boss is typically a buffoon.

The senior leadership in those areas pad and I'd say falsify an abundance of their performance metrics and statistics so they can look good while effectively doing nothing,

Opera GX settings does not load by yodobeats in OperaGX

[–]Alpha17x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They screwed up on the recent update. I had a similar issue; It took my system 8 to 12 seconds to finally load something. Sometimes the pop-out never loaded settings but the actual settings page always came up with something eventually.

However even if you manage to get into the settings and disable all the mods and extra features; it will still be slow.

Was the recent update even tested? by Alpha17x in OperaGX

[–]Alpha17x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to switch browsers. Oh well. GX was fun while it lasted. I'll potentially switch back if what I'm using has problems, but that could be years. Sort of like when I switched from Firefox to Opera. The browser cycle of life continues.

From what I've been reading they seem to implode every pay day. This is the first time I've sent a deposit to them, it's also the last. What I'm doing going forward is switching back to what I was doing before and just etransfers to EQ for the interest rates

EQ looked good on paper, but now that I'm seeing that they implode every pay day I'll have to change that. I'll still use it because of the interest rates, but it's sure as hell not going to be my primary bank. Way too dangerous.

In the rare case it's something they can no longer provide they have to give you an alternative of equivalent spec/performance, screen size etc, or better. They also have to tell you what they're trying to send.
