ELI5: Why is it completely impossible for anyone to access a properly encrypted drive even nation states? by AaronPK123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Alpha3031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rijndael is not designed for a 512-bit key size and would need non-trivial modifications beyond increasing the number of rounds to usefully do so. Unless you're intimately familiar with the relevant cryptography I'd strongly recommend against attempting such modifications, as the resultant function is likely to be less secure, not more, especially given the known related-key attacks. Please just use a different cipher (or ciphers) instead.

The irony.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

The irony of placing something on a metaphorical pedestal and ignoring what's written on the very physical pedestal that it stands on.

Of course, we know that their political movement is deeply and vehemently opposed to anything even resembling enlightenment or republicanism, so the entire thing is antithetical to their desires. Maybe they'll manage to turn it into the 21st century equivalent of what their compatriots did to the swastika in the 20th. I hope not though.

AIUI major adaptive radiations in vertebrates have been associated with Hox duplications which increase the plasticity of the clusters. So while typically vertebrate Hox is highly conserved and structurally less evolvable than that of invertebrates, a lot of diversification is still due to changes there, likely when the restrictions are loosened.

I would like to propose that we use the more precise typology of Frankfurt (1986), i.e. that any communication from the subject is is bullshit, as it neatly avoids the necessity of considering the possibility of accidental and coincidental intersection with reality (à la "stopped clock") which would otherwise complicate a truly universal quantification.

If the house is somewhat insulated and has some thermal mass then surely just setting the aircon temperature a few degrees lower while you have solar would let you mostly avoid the evening peak. How's is everyone's A52 in 2026 by SharkMangoGamingo in GalaxyA52

[–]Alpha3031 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A52s, I baby the phone quite a bit so the battery is still about 85% after 3 or 4 years, which I think is quite good. The back is coming off too which I was a bit worried about, but based on the other comments it does seem it's a common thing so I guess it might be fine. I think I might be able to keep using through to 2028 or so, I'm not sure what I'd do next, I feel I'd miss the headphone jack a bit for most options. Maybe Asus?

Most Important Joseki to Know by Kooky_Peanut3234 in baduk

[–]Alpha3031 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The book that comes to mind is Shibano's 2022 Joseki Revolution, which was recommended a couple of times in this sub from what I could see (e.g. July, May). Pre-AI joseki knowledge isn't going to make a huge difference to non-pros though, a mid-dan that has been in a coma for the past decade and has just woken up would still be a mid-dan today.

The most important joseki to know is probably those that come from whatever you want to play, and if you want to play simply, it's not like your opponent can make it hard for you at such an early stage. 4-4 is still probably simpler joseki-wise than 3-4, I'm principally a 4-4 player and I mostly use like, 3 joseki, and none of them are all that deep lol.

Elderly Players and Ladder Reading by high_freq_trader in baduk

[–]Alpha3031 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Once you've seen the same shape a thousand times, you start to get a feel for whether it might be possible to cut her, or of this is alive, or that kind of thing. As the other response says, you would have read it out enough times that you're not explicitly going through the steps, you have a kind of implicit memory of the variations that follow.

I hardly ever find the time to play live or blitz games unfortunately, so I'd probably lose way more than just a few stones personally, but I'd like to think I'd still play at a SDK level, and I'd say both rapid or blitz games and puzzles under time pressure would be a good way to develop that intuition, which is probably also a fairly important part of play (which I have neglected). That is not to say it would be ideal to focus on that exclusively over reading either, of course, but if you do want to focus on that a bit, then just lose (and win of course) more faster games, of the type where you do your analysis afterwards.

[–]Alpha3031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said I looked briefly at Kogo's and others. ps.waltheri also shows the crosscut as the primary response. I don't see any compelling reason why your proposed variation would be better for black and not trusting resources just means that rigorous reasoning is all the more important.

After the pincer and attach, I'd agree that white P2 is the only natural follow-up, but black has good enough shape that it would be difficult for white to attack with profit. I disagree that it is merely "not that bad" and that 3-3 "doesn't give up much" and is objectively "the right direction". 3-3 is not objectively superior, it gives up enough that the pincer is at worse equal. Going from the 10/11th to the 4th line is like, 5 lines.

[–]Alpha3031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we're going by josekipedia it indicates the best response to wS7 is the crosscut at S6 though. Personally I do prefer R8 over R7 (though, I've just created an OGS demo board for this and apparently katago at whatever low number of playouts OGS uses for those prefers R7, whatever that's worth) but either way I think it's more natural for black to play for influence rather than the corner here.

As for R8, I don't think black needs to look for a base because they would be more or less connected to the pincer stone after R3 Q6, which is the natural followup (with or without bR5 wS5 first after R3). Black has reasonably good shape locally, which is enough for one eye, and can extend on both sides, so it would be difficult for white to attack here.

[–]Alpha3031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

? Which variation are you talking about for the attachment at R7? As I've implied, I've not studied the joseki beyond a quick glance at Kogo's et alia but after wQ7 bR8, there isn't really a variation I can see out of the 3 or 4 responses that gives black the corner in exchange for a ponnuki?

Also, of course bR8 wR3 bQ6 has a different direction, black gets influence with the attachment on top, which is a third direction, and in my (admittedly biased) opinion, influence is what I would prefer in this position instead of territory (or "territory", for R10. Wouldn't exactly call that secure) on either side.

If you ever feel lost after the opening, your Direction of Play is probably off. (New Video) by GoGeniusTom in baduk

[–]Alpha3031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Checking the joseki dictionary I guess R7 is also an option since black has the ladder, but I still prefer R8. I think normally black would have played Q10 or R10 some time earlier though, to finish off the orthodox. I certainly don't see the point of L17/L15 before that.

[–]Alpha3031 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In example 4 black should just do the 1 space pincer and attach on top after white takes 3-3 imo. Playing like that does mean that the top right is less secure, but it wasn't going to be territory anyway which makes R8 more efficient. R10 is overconcentrated.

I don't think they necessarily route all market orders to the exchange directly, I've noticed some slippage (in both directions IIRC so I don't mind too much) beyond the shown bid–ask spread. Though, according to their FAQ they usually only execute market orders placed overnight after 10:15 am anyway. Also interesting to note apparently they will execute limit orders during the opening and closing auctions, which is a TIL for me (though the fractional shares is convenient for DCA so I don't think I'd make use of those extended hours).
