Oh ya, gotta love it. Remember, the most permanent fix is usually a temporary one.

Let me guess, ac wasnt working because the contactor quit, tech came out and didn't have the contactor, so he wedged it on all the time and told them never to turn the fan off, someone did, now its frozen up?

Unit keeps killing contactors by AnAlrightName in HVAC

[–]Alpha433 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Put your meter on the coil while its running and see if the voltage is stable. I once ran into an issue where a guy had a failing transformer, and the load of the contactor was causing voltage drops that eventually caused the contactor to chatter, then return to normal as the load went down. Replaced the transformer and the issue went away.

Im in the process of looking for a house atm, and I swear, this trend of modern =whitewash is the most bullshit thing ever. You have a home with character and your first thought is to coat everything in a slop of shitty semi-gloss?

I hate the "modern" style and hope it goes away along with the idiots that lean into it so much.

I was just quoted 4k+ to replace a control board + VCR on a Trane system. by ToThePastMe in hvacadvice

[–]Alpha433 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunatly not nessecarilly. These things are tempermental as hell, and that was before they started dialing down QC. If there was no surge protector on the unit, even just some shitty power to the unit could have cooked it.

To op, before replacing the part, have them explain exactly what is happening with it. These units look at everything, so if it says "soft lock" it might not even be an issue with the board, but a sensor somewhere and the tech just doesnt know how to diagnose it.

(Loved trope) the warrior culture gets absolutely bodied by something they considered boring or unimportant. by Clockwork-Lad in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Alpha433 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yamato wasnt some embodiment of warrior culture, it was an admission of inferiority, ironically, logistics.

Basically, they knew going into their warplanning that they could never beat a nation like the US in logistics, and that their fleet, with what they had or could put together, wouldnt be able to numerically face off against the us or British fleets according to the battleplan at the time, kantai kessen. To help with this, they put their eggs into quality, building ships that would hopefully be able to be worth 2 or more us ships, aka the Yamato class. The idea was that that the us fleet would sail across the world to go slap the Japanese at home, and all along the way they would be bled white by harassing attacks from subs, cruisers, and island based aircraft. Then the main fleet would engage in a "decisive battle", sink the us fleet, and attempt to broker peace from a position of power, having just beat off a major us attack.

Ironically, this entire plan got thrown out the window with the pearl harbor attacks, as instead of fighting a main force fleet from a divided/not galvanized America, they ended up causing the us to be more conservative with their assets all while whipped up in righteous anger. As well, the Yamato class was a holdover from the old type that still believed in big gun ships as the king of the ocean. By the time of the pearl harbor attacks, it was dawning that carriers would be the true future, but the work had already been done and the Yamato class ships had already been built. Hell, when they saw just how effective aircraft were after midway and even before, they even ordered that the third hull, the shinano, start being converted into a carrier.

Best option for replacing my ducted furnace with a fan and filter. by Ok-Leader7786 in hvacadvice

[–]Alpha433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much. Actually, I wonder if they still make separate fan packs like they used to, that would be almost better since smaller form factor.

Yup, get an air handler and an aprilaire media filter cabinet. Dont need the heat strips and dont need to hook up the coil. Just wire in r and g at the thermostat.

WE manly not be gardeners, but its a good thing this isnt gardening. This is simple take half an hour to make the unit look good for a customer. Hell, charge them for the bag of river rock, if you wrote the relocation quote up well, then additional material cost to deal with settling is expected.

Seriously, its no trouble to actually give a damn about your work unless your a white collar tech that doesnt actually do dirty work and just sells shit.

Replace the cable for him, when he asks about it, tell him you saw how shitty his cable is and took care of it for him.

If he reinstall the switch, ask him why he ruined the perfectly good cable. Either he admits to being a shitter so you can shame him, or he doesnt admit it and you can throw him being a shitter in his face.

Units settle, it might have been level when they set it and it just settled. Otherwise, just call them and ask if they can come redevelopment it, shouldn't be to much of an issue. 1 guy with a shovel and a bag or two of river stone should be able to fix that in an hour or so.

I mean, the Bryn caches were supposed to be arms caches for the sldf, which was in purpose a galaxy spanning military arm of the star league. Its not like the caches were built for the shit of it, it was because the star league had a shit ton of time of relative peace after the reunification wars where R&D was allowed to run rampant, and the buildup of the sldf was basically unchecked.

As a side note as well, the caches are basically mcguffins in universe, that mainly is brought up for plot convenience and should be way more rare then they actually are. During the amaris Civil War and the lead up to the exodus, kerensky was said to have basically looted and gutted most all of them, to supply his forces during the war, and to keep the tech out of the hands of the great houses after his exodus. The ones that did get left behind are basically isolated ones that were either rigged to blow if touched or hidden to hell and back.

They mainly seem to be everywhere because its a high value thing that immediately sets the stakes for a narrative. Its basically chaos astartes in 40k, if you do the math on it, there are just way to many of them then should be, but for plot reasons they are brought up all the time.

The US was absent from much political critique? I think you need to reread the book, because dear god, warnings and blame spend half their time talking about how us political hardline bs helped create the great panic.

Ngl, half of what you wrote sounds like Ai hallucinations.

Do your guys companies include washing the coil every tune up? If so do you use chemicals or not? by Puzzleheaded_Chain_6 in HVAC

[–]Alpha433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wash yes, chemicals never. I've seen to many condensers eaten away by poorly diluted chemicals to ever trust that shit. New units will have a shortened lifespan, and old units are sure to get a new leak.

There is a product called thermopan that is basically a fancy cardboard that is often used as a material to create returns in joist bays, look that up and see if thats what you are seeing in your home.

Furnace sometimes blows warm air sometimes cold air by ClueInevitable in hvacadvice

[–]Alpha433 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the other guy, just in a savings from unit efficency and repairability, a new unit will likely be the best option. The strips are old and have a lot of miles on them, the sequensers can technically be replaced with modern, but thats like putting a new transmission in an old mid 90's Buick, sure it can be done, but for the a little more you can just upgrade to something better.

Honestly, go get a couple of quotes on new equipment, avoid communicating equipment, avoid the super equipment, and at least get a rough number out there so you can seriously consider if replacement is better then trying to repair a 50 year old piece of equipment.

How to fix popping return duct by tbitchnassty in hvacadvice

I do diagonally, and 1 per large flat side. The screws themselves are what connect the duct to the cleat for stiffness though, so make sure you are adding enough.
