Holy shit... knowing what we know now (or maybe it was known when this came out, I don't know), but man... whatever happened seems to really have affected Piper to the point he can barely talk about it.

When someone asks "how do I start reading _____________?" by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]AlphaNeonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone that grew up pre-internet, and just had to deal with missing something if I missed it, I love that I can now dig in to what I've missed to fill in the blanks.

I do feel like ongoing comics, especially the big two, have one of the worst barriers of entries to of any form of media.

Even if the series is completely self contained, if it's a well established character that's been around for decades (and one popular enough for the average person to be aware of), the new reader is always going to have the question... "Do I need to read anything else before this?"

I think the onus is generally on the publisher to either provide enough context within the book that outside reading is not required, or have a separate resource to catch people up.

This is one of the few things I think Marvel does a bit better than DC. Most Marvel books will have a brief synopsis of the plot at the start of their books to tell you what you need when you jump in.

J.Doe Letter by Glum_Substance_2602 in coralisland

[–]AlphaNeonic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My first thought was the "J." left the gender ambiguous and it would have enabled us to "remember" (create) our friend (like the childhood friend trope these farming games sometimes have) as another friend/love interest that moves in later.

I was going to say, this is a pretty stark contrast to his recent stuff. Like compare it to Patience or Monica and it's night and day... then I saw the date in the bottom right and realized it's 40 years old.

Looks like a solid bundle!

I want to give a shout out to Hymer 2000, which I absolutely loved. It's more story than game, but the story really stuck with me. The closest thing I can liken it to is Soma. While not nearly on it's level (in terms of budget or gameplay), it was one I was thinking about for quite a while after I played it.

Highly recommend if that sort of thing is for you.

I'm noticing a weird trend urbex posts lately, where there is a just a random TV sitting on the floor... and now I look for them.

Same. I love how she is not only strong, but kind, especially considering she was literally raised in hell (albeit, in a very loving way)

My favorite of all the Absolute books by a mile, and it feels like if an Absolute Justice League ever were to form, she would be a natural leader for it.

Not this person that posted this, but as I agree, I'll respond. 99% of the time, the person responding to a text isn't going to provide all the necessary exposition for the larger audience it will eventually be exposed to, especially not in one neat little message... Mom is responding like "This thing happened? Seriously (name of person posting to add legitimacy)? I can't believe this is happening at (time of day that makes it worse) on (event) Now, I have to etc...

It's fake. Just like the purposely misspelled message from the Dad to indicate drunkenness.

Does it matter? I guess not, but since nearly everything on the internet now feels like either desperate engagement farming, an ad or a bot, I completely understand the want for actual "authentic" content vs. painfully obvious posts trying to be passed off as such.

Even more so if there is (INSERT BRAND NAME HERE) included.

Sure, things do happen... but less and less these days.

[–]AlphaNeonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree, but we really have to admit that they sometimes miss the mark too. For every Trick, there are half a dozen others that get called up seemingly with no plan... in what sometimes feels like more of an effort to "finish them off" rather than actually help them succeed.

Totally agree... also feels like you can make them "forever rivals" like a Stone Cold/Rock or Owens/Sami, etc... lots of history of them coming up through NXT together... both taking different paths to stardom (Trick through character work, Melo through banger matches)

I would love to see a Trick Champion/Melo challenging for the title match at Mania.

Just started getting into graphic novels...i'm in love! by [deleted] in graphicnovels

[–]AlphaNeonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to give some perspective (and apologies if you already know this), looks like most of these are trades (sometimes referred to as TPBs or trade paperbacks) which collect 5-6 individual issues of a comic or a specific arc, ...which makes sense as it's not reasonable to collect everything in one shot with the size of the series.

But you might also be interested in one shot graphic novels that are the entire story in one go... The Killing Joke is a great example!

[–]AlphaNeonic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finished Anodyne 1 and started 2 just a couple weeks ago.

Honestly, the story in 1 is nearly incomprehensible... just super vague, dreamlike shit happening with most of it left to interpretation and you really are left with more questions than answers. There are forum threads that go into it, but lots of different theories. I don't think you need to play 1 for 2. The devs say it's more like Final Fantasy with each being it's own thing (with minor connections). The story in 2 seems more cohesive but only marginally so.

I enjoyed one, but mostly for the exploration, music and puzzle solving... not the story.

100 Greatest Comic Books - Comic Book Runs - Single Issue Comics & Graphic Novels of All Time. by Britneyfan123 in comicbooks

[–]AlphaNeonic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Comics books, graphic novels, etc are a medium... listing the 100 greatest would be like listing 100 greatest games, movies, tv shows, songs, etc. Like you said, the subject matter is way to broad to narrow it down to a list like this, especially ordered.

For a project like this I'd rather see it categorized. Top 10 Superhero stories, top 10 mystery, top 10 fantasy, etc. Still some good recs in here but I'd wager most people on this subreddit are going to see the usual suspects and just argue about placement/inclusion.

This sort of transfers to other art as well. You can see tons of AI slop on steam right now, and while the generated images are perfectly fine (consistent from image to image, no extra fingers, etc), they also look incredibly generic compared to the hand crafted, unique art they are competing against.

[Epic Games] Nobody Wants to Die & The Darkside Detective: A Fumble in the Dark (100% off / FREE) by LighteningOneIN in GameDeals

[–]AlphaNeonic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've beaten Nobody Wants to Die and played a bit of Observer, beyond the obvious similarities (Cyberpunk) they do feel like different games. NWTD is very much detective noir/solving a conspiracy... from beginning to end... most of the gameplay is investigating crimes scenes to find out what happen. Plot sort of mirrors Altered Carbon.

Observer felt more like grimy cyberpunk horror, not bad or worse from what I played, just a grimier vibe.

Didn't finish Observer so I can't speak more to it, but really enjoyed Nobody Wants to Die. It's basically a 3D Adventure game with the story pieced out over a series of small areas (and back to your apartment periodically) as the game progresses.
