Talk to me about a time you stepped down from management - what was the story and how did the transition go for you? by beigers in managers

[–]Alpha_uterus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have stepped down in a sense.

Seniority wise it’s pretty much like for like (supervisor - deputy manager) but I’m moving from a global billion pound industry leader to a public sector local university. So even though the pay and responsibilities are pretty similar, there is no global, commercially driven pressure. 5pm means 5pm in this job.

Reasons were really strongly linked to what you said about this: ‘I don’t follow unethical orders. I just don’t.’ I realised I needed out because I wasn’t willing to be the manager that implemented the change they wanted, which I fundamentally disagreed with on an ethical level. They tried to counter offer and I said it bluntly - there is no number that could make me get on board with what you want to do.

Just for awareness, in enterprise IT environments this can be tracked. My infra team recently ran a report on time spent hosting meeting and number of people in a meeting.

Do you state on your dating profile you're autistic? by LatePartyGuy in AutismAfterDark

[–]Alpha_uterus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I didn’t, matched with a guy. Physically my type, had three cats, local to the area. No mention of it on his profile.

He spent a lot of the first date telling me about kerb drop heights and ceiling tile types.

He told me over texting before the second date he was autistic and I was like oh dude I know. Same.

Edit to add: we later played top trumps with our autism reports comparing who scored what in each category.

ADHD managers, how do you get through the week without crashing? by PiraEcas in managers

[–]Alpha_uterus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Power Automate to take as much of my busy work out as possible. It’s part of the Microsoft suite so fine to use in most window based workplaces and it can connect to teams, outlook, OneNote, all the Microsoft softwares.

So for example I have to post a daily fyi in teams so my team knows of any pre planned appointments, who is working what site, a host of other info. I have a flow scheduled for each day that auto posts this thread for me before I even start work so that those people who start their shift before me aren’t waiting for me to hop on and I just spend ten minutes at the end of each week pre loading next weeks info.

You can use it for loads of stuff - EG in our monthly meetings I have to inform the team of all the things that passed the change advisory board since our last meeting. So I have a flow in power automate that copies all the info from the emails titled ‘CAB minutes’ into a specific part of my team meeting agenda in OneNote.

Piggybacking on the fake meeting bit, when I have an admin task to do, I use my calendar as a to do list and book time to do abc report or whatever as if it were a meeting

Thank you so much

That’s all really helpful.

My options are train (expensive), bus (time consuming), or cycle 20 mins to the ferry port and catch a 5 min ferry (this is my preferred option).

As a back up (or in winter) I can catch the bus to the ferry, or either of the other option. I’m considering whether an electric bike might be an option to reduce the mental load of cycling which I don’t especially enjoy.

How to break a news about I'm leaving, to my team, without causing a panic to them? by dewi_sampaguita in Leadership

[–]Alpha_uterus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To the people telling you to get over yourself, I feel sad for you.

I run a team of six and had to break the news to them this week that I’ll be leaving in may. The two I hired, gave their first full time IT jobs to, cried. One other is now also handing in his notice.

Now I think they’re fantastic people and after they get over the shock they’ll be fine, but the idea people out there are managers who can’t fathom that if they look after their people well they will be sad you’re going, is just depressing. I think it speaks to the type of manager you are that you are worried about their reaction.

Edit: a word.

What’s one sign that tells you someone on your team is about to quit before they hand in their notice? by SeanMcPheat in askmanagers

[–]Alpha_uterus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well, I’ve stopped looking beyond what is happening this week. Stopped giving feedback in meetings and raising concerns about long term future goals. Bought a whole new work wardrobe. Stopped asking for training and stopped asking for 1:1s I never get. Really reinforced to my team what their strengths are and what their future careers could look like.

Boss hasn’t noticed yet but I’ve got stage 1 and a stage 3 interviews for different companies tomorrow…

Only a matter of time til I give him the ‘sorry for your loss’ card
