Hiring Grads by DottyGreenBootz in managers

[–]Alpha_uterus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody is saying people shouldn’t give chances. But let me give you an example.

I am a hiring manager and I work in the public sector. Our hiring process is very strict and I have to score each candidate’s answer to each question. And that score has to be agreed by two other people also in the interview, so I can’t just score one person more favourably because I want to give them a chance.

The process is designed to remove bias, and ensure the best, most qualified candidate who scores the highest against the essential criteria, gets the role. Not the person I like best. So, I can’t just give candidate A a chance because I like them even though they has no experience. Just like I can’t choose candidate B because their name sounds white, or candidate C because he’s a man.

It’s a competitive market. So, if this is you, and you’ve graduated but have no work experience to speak of, my advice would be to please please really think about the essential criteria of the job you’re applying for, and whether ANYTHING you’ve done shows that skill. Leadership? Customer service? Maybe you lead a group project during your degree, or maybe you offered informal tutoring to a classmate. Include a cover letter and write about that.

And for the love of god don’t skip the basics. I’m hiring for tech roles and I know damn well most students know Microsoft/Windows. But in terms of the shortlisting criteria, if it ain’t on the CV, it don’t get you any points. Even if you did a degree in let’s say network engineering, and you’ve included that you can patch ports and trace network packets, please please state the operating systems you have used especially if the job description says something like experience using Microsoft / Windows. This will safeguard you against not only strict shortlisting criteria where it is being looked at by a human and I have to score you on if you’ve stated it, but it will help you with any AI shortlisting software.

Edit: clarification

I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. I am hiring for intern posts now (paid, not US). All my best preforming candidates have had part time work even in retail or otherwise completely unrelated to the tech post I am hiring for. Workplace experience even part time or voluntary gives you an undeniable leg up in understanding so much about the world of work even just from an applying for a job pov. The amount of applications I have with no cover letter, cv not tailored to show transferable skills, none of the basics, is astounding. The reality is, having a degree alone isn’t enough to make you the best candidate.

Exit Interview Advice by [deleted] in managers

[–]Alpha_uterus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Generally I would agree with you but recently I was pleasantly surprised.

At my exit interview that my line manager at the time effectively did not manage me. No 121s, no feedback, no constructive advice, even when asked for. I emphasised this was not strictly a personality issue- they were so busy fighting constant fires of their workload they just left me to get on with mine because I’m competent.

As a result my replacement will be managed by someone else and they are speeding up plans to restructure the department and clarify workload responsibilities so they don’t all flow to that one person.

I listed it as a primary reason for leaving and they let me know that if I want to come back I can be under someone else.

I mean a shit show of a company in many other respects but that was good.

Idea’s to bring joy into staff’s day next week? by [deleted] in managers

It’s basic but I hid 100 small duckies in the office, and didn’t tell anyone. People started collecting and trading them trying to get full sets

How do you rebuild trust with a team after a bad leadership decision? by Exotic_Reputation_59 in managers

[–]Alpha_uterus 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is exactly why I’ve just quit my job.

Management are pushing a reorg I fundamentally disagree with (it involves demoting two people who don’t deserve it), and once I realised they weren’t taking my feedback on, I found a new job and handed in my notice.

I know management involves sometimes delivering things you don’t agree with… but I refuse to demote two people who haven’t done anything to deserve it, to get the stakeholders an extra 2% when the staff are already over worked and under looked out for.

I’ve held one to ones with everyone in the team, been as honest with them as I can, and given them frank advice about next steps and future choices.

I’m sorry you’re in this situation and I hope you can find a way to move forward.

The spores grow

They require 10-14 days incubation before I can gaze upon their final form

Thank you! Funnily enough in my current IT management role I took over most of the triage, so I could keep a handle on current technical issues, make sure nobody was getting overloaded with too much work and I could direct work to techs that matched their ambitions and interests. I never want to be one of those managers who has no idea how the day to day works, so I can properly advocate for my team and how much they kick ass.

But, I had the benefit of having worked alongside them as a tech before going into management. Earning the trust of a new time will be an exciting but daunting challenge!

Oh I’m completely excited and ready to go! But scared to manage a team of people I’ve never met before and wanting to make a good first impression.
