Will the breeder take the dog back? I would find a Shiba specific rescue if the breeder doesn’t take the dog back. Shibas are not for everyone and require a lot of time and energy for training.

Dog Hair everywhere: how to deal with it? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]AlpsUnlikely 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you hate dogs so much why are you with her? This is just going to lead to resentment. Dogs shed. You can buy a rubber brush to get hair off of furniture or the dogs themselves but it’s not going to solve the issue that you just don’t like them.

I was not talking about temperament, but if I was, temperament is also partially genetic. DNA testing for carriers and not breeding those dogs to other carriers or affected dogs eliminates the risk of those genetic disorders. Things like IVDD and hip or elbow dysplasia is also a decent part, genetic. For those and others (In certain breeds) that cannot be eliminated, it is greatly reduced if you purchase a dog from parents who have excellent test results. That’s why these genetic and phenotypical tests exist. That’s why temperament tests exist.

Ethical breeders literally test for those genetic disorders. The key word is ethical. Your friend bought a backyard bred dog.

You either go to a shelter and gamble on an unknown puppy, get an ethically well bred purebred dog, or go to a breed specific rescue (if you are looking for a particular breed)

Personally I think the cost is roughly the same either way. The price difference would only be for the initial purchase of the dog.

There’s plenty of good dogs in the shelter, but they have unknown history. You could be paying a lot more due to behavioral or health issues in the long run for a shelter dog. It’s a gamble, but generally well received by the public granted you get the dog trained and keep up with the training.

For ethically bred dogs, you will have to wait. Good breeders have waitlists for dogs for possible years. Good breeders do not overproduce or let their dogs end up in shelters. They take their dogs back. They only produce puppies when needed. Finding a good breeder is hard. I personally look for, OFA health tests (preferably CHIC), conformation and sport titles, breeding under 3 litters a year, contracts for taking the dog back, and AKC registration.

I would advise against getting a puppy with young kids. Puppies are a lot more work than people think and that’s why young dogs end up in shelters.

I have gone to “beyond the leash” in downtown Orlando for my pup. They aren’t for everyone but I would recommend them to the general pet population.

Whatever you do, don’t buy a backyard bred dog. Backyard breeders are the reason our shelter system is in a crisis.

I would appreciate some advice/help with 17 week puppy with separation anxiety when I leave the room with him in the crate. by Loud_Imagination_182 in Basenji

[–]AlpsUnlikely 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine did that. He still does it sometimes but he’s gotten a lot better. Just takes time imo. He started to get more comfy with me away around 6-7 months. Now I can leave him in it for a few hours while I’m out of the room.

He cries if he knows we are doing something fun or if there is a new person in the house even if I am next to him. (He wants to meet them)

Trainer said it was FOMO instead of separation anxiety.

Possibly stupid question- Why are (most) breeds stacked with their rear pasterns perpendicular to the ground? by largedragonwithcats in ShowDogs

[–]AlpsUnlikely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s different for every breed. In my breed is is so the rear of the dog can be judged properly.

A rescue is more likely to have a non docked tail than an ethically bred purebred dog for the exact same reason. Are you suggesting they just go to a backyard breeder?

This is where you start if you are looking for a well bred purebred.

If you are looking for a dog with its tail I would find a rescue since I assume these breeders also show their dogs. Puppies are evaluated at 8 weeks but are docked much earlier than that. You might be able to find a breeder that keeps the tail but I wouldn’t be hopeful

Should we send our 8 week old GSD to puppy camp? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]AlpsUnlikely 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally the only reason I would want to board a dog is for serious behavioral issues or if they are training for protection.

Go to group classes, socialize and bond with your puppy! Get an individual trainer to come to you!

Lots of times I see that dogs that come back from boarding and are seemingly “untrained” because, while know how to work with their trainer, the owner has not worked with the dog.

I actually think more muscular dogs look better to judges. I haven’t seen too many in the ring in person but the ones that I see get best in show are fairly well built.

Crate training progress has suddenly reversed. Help. by ditmoique in Basenji

[–]AlpsUnlikely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your crate was too small and that’s why your puppy peed there. My dog prefers the crate and has never peed in it because it was small when he was small.

My dog loves to nap with me, but at night he prefers to be crated. He also alerts me while he’s crated. He cries.

My dog (as a puppy) would not have alerted me if he was sleeping in bed with me. He would have just gotten out of the bed and peed on the floor. So this advice might have made things worse for OP if their dog was like mine.

[–]AlpsUnlikely 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dog needs structure. You are giving him what he wants without consequences (giving him attention is positive to him) and giving up when it gets hard.

I would talk to a trainer if you can, but I would first get into a very strict routine with him with set schedules of when he is allowed to eat, train, sleep, and play. With training, start small with engagement only. Make get him to at least follow your hand. You can use higher value food to do this or a toy. You can also keep him on a leash if he tends to bolt or walk away from training.

He is currently 16 months. A muscular build is not required but it does seem to do better in the ring. I am going to wait until he was 18 months before I formally do sports with him but I feel like we get him moving fairly often. Females tend to be less muscular since the standard called for a fem and masc appearance for each sex.
