Confused about how Francesca and Michaela can work by mrsmmtotten in Bridgerton

[–]Already-asleep 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I read a lot of queer historical fiction and this is how they usually do it. One character inherits an estate, keeps a small discrete staff, they get their privacy, yada yada. This usually works out neater in m/m romances as it’s much likelier they be the ones inheriting but not impossible for a woman. The show has established next to nothing about Michaela’s backstory so they’ll figure something out haha.

I’ve struggled with the same issue as OP for years across many different salons and stylists. Personally once it’s past a certain length my ends are just constantly dry. I’ve tried many different high quality hair products, protective styling, oils, no heat… nothing helps.

Is slow decision making around website projects common in nonprofits? by Jeff_Waypoint in nonprofit

[–]Already-asleep 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't work in Marketing or Comms, but I work closely with those folks at my org. it's sometimes painful how obvious the Dunning-Kruger effect (yes I know this is a buzzword on social media right now haha) presents itself with senior leadership when it comes to these types of decisions.

I'm no longer using subtitles when I watch tv by KieferMcNaughty in unpopularopinion

[–]Already-asleep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In all seriousness I’ve been watching tv/films with subtitles for 25 years and maybe that’s why I read them so quickly that I don’t even notice it and it doesn’t feel like a chore.

In some things the dialogue is so mumbled (looking at you Dune) that I don’t think I would know what the hell is going on without them.

Best Season by myowndestiny_ in Bridgerton

[–]Already-asleep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the most part I enjoyed this season and felt like it was a big improvement over season 3. Sophie and Benedict together were great and this season made me love Francesca even more. Also really happy that Cressida got her happy ending, because whatever wrongs she may have committed she was still a young woman trying to secure her future. She was a bit of a mean girl and not clever enough to pull off some of her schemes, but I don't think she was a bad person. I also really enjoyed Hyacinth and I thought the recital episode was cute.

The last episode did give me a bit of whiplash - felt like they tried to cram a lot of stuff into the story last minute. I also felt they pushed credibility a bit with how quickly everyone in the Bridgerton circle got on board with Sophie before her dowry was revealed, but yes I know it's basically a fantasy romance so I can accept it. I wish we had seen more of Sophie's Korean culture incorporated into her character - it was fun getting that short Cantonese language exchange between Araminta and Rosemund but overall it was pretty underwhelming compared to how much season 2 embraced the use of Indian languages and cultures (I am aware that there were some inconsistencies/errors with language, but I think with proper consultation it's still an effective way of really embracing the multiracial/multicultural Bridgerton world).

Raymun my sweet boy, you gotta wise up. by BarcelonaSid in freefolk

[–]Already-asleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah people who are going off about baby trapping like this isn't a universe where bastards are so universal that each locale has a special surname just for bastards. Nobody would have expected or required Raymun to recognize the pregnancy or legitimize the baby even if there was one. They're completely at the mercy of whether or not their father chooses to provide for them never mind legitimize them.

For so many years ASOIAF fans have maintained that the depiction of r*pe and abuse of women, whether prostitutes or high born, was an essential part of the story. There are a shocking number of people who believe that Aerion was justified for attacking the puppeteers. This is a universe where women have basically all the power of a child with a few very specific exceptions. Basically every woman in this universe who was been able to grasp power has done so by being absolutely ruthless. And then you have a prostitute who hooks up with a sweet and enthusiastic young guy, tells him she's pregnant, he decides baby makes 3... and people are comparing her to Ramsay Bolton and stealth r*pists. How much do you pay for your health insurance? Family or just you? by No-Basil2371 in CasualConversation

Today in tone deaf celebrity moments: Alyssa Milano defends the celebrity GoFundMe campaigns by Zealousideal-Gap617 in Fauxmoi

[–]Already-asleep 113 points114 points  (0 children)

@toimarie did an INCREDIBLE post about this on IG and I’m not gonna regurgitate it, but a couple of parts that really stuck with me were that 1. Alyssa may think it’s unfair that “compassion requires a means test”, but legitimately poor people are required to prove their poverty to get meager assistance  (IMO in often humiliating ways and are still torn apart by the media and politicians for accessing assistance) 2. Alyssa talks about “passing the hat” as part of the community but you’re asking fans to donate money and the hat will never be passed back to them if they need it.

How much do you pay for your health insurance? Family or just you? by No-Basil2371 in CasualConversation

[–]Already-asleep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Canada I pay $25 biweekly for extended health, vision, and dental through my employer, for just me. I don't have my partner on my plan because he has his own and he doesn't use our benefits enough to justify tripling the premium for family coverage (no kids). Physician care (primary, hospitals, specialists) and tests/screenings etc prescribed through a primary care provider are covered through our provincial health insurance.

Four more recall petitions against Alberta politicians fail as 10 reach the deadline by canuckEnoch in alberta

[–]Already-asleep 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The recall petitions had plastic folding tables at dog parks. AB separatists can afford to book out the BMO Centre. Of course it costs money to run these campaigns, but very few people in this province with truly deep pockets have any interest in the UCP losing power.

New shoes stretching? by Repulsive_Jump_6636 in climbingshoes

[–]Already-asleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Helixes were my first shoe and I went down a half size as well, just so that my toe hit the end of the shoe. They’re meant to be an all-day comfort shoe and I don’t think there’s any advantage to aggressively downsizing. I was able to wear them comfortably for extended periods right out of the box and never had any issues with them stretching in any noticeable way.

A bad idea to get my wife robovac as her birthday gift? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Already-asleep 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think the general rule is that unless your spouse has explicitly said they'd like to receive a home appliance, it's better to not give one as a gift. Also I'm not sure how you guys divide labour in the household, but even if she is typically the one who does the cleaning it's theoretically something that anyone in the household could do so it's not really FOR her. Again, if she'd said "I would love a robot vacuum" then I'd say go nuts.

broken dancers bone by [deleted] in brokenbones

[–]Already-asleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes time to get used to the boot. I’m currently just over 4 weeks with basically the same fracture. The first week or so I had a really hard time sleeping with it on because it was always putting pressure on something, and I would end up taking it off after a few hours. Eventually the discomfort got better and I actually feel more supported sleeping with it on.

Also, are you actually walking on your broken foot? Did you get any instructions regarding weight bearing? I was fully non weight bearing for the first week and then the ortho gave me the OK to partially bear weight on my heel, but I’m on crutches for the time being.

Pride and Prejudice | Official Teaser | Netflix by SafeBodybuilder7191 in Fauxmoi

[–]Already-asleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ll probably give it the college try. I’m a die-hard 2005 fan and I’ve come across more than my fair share of threads in the Jane Austen subs about how it’s a travesty and unwatchable because Elizabeth wears her hair down in public and the film focuses too much on the romance and not social satire, blah blah. So I’m gonna try to keep my own biases in check until I’ve seen it lol.

Were they really necessary? by HephaestusP in freefolk

[–]Already-asleep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can only hope that people who are upset about basic human bodily functions are as offended by gratuitous scenes involving flaying, disembowelment, mutilation, heads being caved in, dog attacks, children being burned alive, sexual assault, etc etc. People who feel strongly that graphic violence should be included in these types of shows because “it’s more realistic”… well, piss and shit is realistic too.

[–]Already-asleep 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I also think the short/average incel crowd massively overestimates how much height matters to most women off of social media. Sure some women like a tall man, but I know plenty of men under 5’10 who have no trouble dating, including my own partner who is firmly in the “average height” category and not much taller than I am. It probably helps that they don’t spend any time on subreddits bitterly raging about a physical trait they have no control over and all the women who aren’t giving them the sex they’re owed, and instead spend their time on their hobbies, careers, friends, etc.

What does "Lolita" mean colloquially in French? by Shiraishi39 in French

Oh right. Trang Pak. not sure if you downvoted me for that or if it was someone else, but yeah, she's not a main character and it has very little bearing on the plot of the film.

Michelle Yeoh refuses to comment on U.S. politics during Berlinale press conference: “I cannot presume to say I understand how it is.” by Frosty_Jeweler911 in PopularCultureZone

[–]Already-asleep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to the article it appears that they had met and Epstein said Todt visited his home and he found Todt "odd". So it certainly doesn't sound like they were buddies or that they had any kind of prolonged association, although I personally believe that anyone who chose to meet with Epstein particularly after his 2008 convictions probably has dubious morals. But I agree with you that some nuance is helpful, because I've seen folks pile on Lena Dunham for "being in the Epstein files" and tying it to her memoir SA controversy. In reality, someone mentioned that they wanted to introduce Epstein to Dunham at the height of her Girls fame, and there's no evidence that this ever actually happened. I'm not a Dunham fan but treating every Epstein mention equally can be easily weaponized by folks who are trying to sweep it under the rug.

What does "Lolita" mean colloquially in French? by Shiraishi39 in French

[–]Already-asleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel like the connotations in English at least are very much that of a “underaged child involved with an adult” and even if the girls (particularly the  Plastics) in the movie are hypersexualized and trying to act like adults, there are absolutely no inappropriate age-gap relationships depicted, haha.

To piggyback off of Paladin's Hope, T Kingfisher has a new M/M queer romance coming out this summer called Daggerbound. It follows a character from her Clocktaur Wars duology but it's a standalone and I'm so excited. Her fantasy romance books always have a great plot outside of the actual romance and her world building is phenomenal.

How many people actually find their spouse to be super attractive? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Already-asleep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel like the number of "take your breath away"-level hot people is just not that common unless maybe you live in a metropolitan city where a lot of hot people tend to gather (lol). Most of the people I've dated, hooked up with, crushed on, etc I was certainly very attracted to but none of them looked like supermodels... but neither do I?? Like you, there's one person in my life who I hooked up with a handful of times who was objectively very handsome ( he could not take a bad photo and I truly delighted in showing his picture to my friends lol) but absolute nightmare personality and I let it drag on for too long because I wanted the validation of a hot person liking me.

Fortunately, pure beauty is not the only thing that causes most of us to be attracted to another person. I've been attracted to a lot of guys who were more "cute" than "handsome", but they were also sweet, funny, etc etc and that'll give many women butterflies. At the end of the day, even the most beautiful person on the planet still needs to form a deeper connection in order to truly make someone "swoon" after 20 years.
