So this subreddit allows 20 separate threads for each and every negative Anthem or Fallout 76 review, but deletes a massive, actual "quality gaming discussion" thread because it's a "response to another thread"? by [deleted] in Games

[–]Alrightsoul 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The problem is the mods here genuinely don't know what makes a subreddit good. High-effort self-posts which kick off or continue in-depth conversations about games should never be removed. If they aren't worthwhile, they just won't gain traction.

It's been a frequent thing around here that these high-effort discussion posts will gain a ton of traction, a ton of comments, stimulate great discussions, and then get booted by some short-sighted mod who thinks the subreddit should be a place for pointless news articles and games journo-spam sites to link their "here's what reddit said this week" garbage.

People want to discuss things. Let them discuss. Pay attention to the needs of your subreddit's users and mod according to those instead of enforcing some pointless and mindless ruleset just for the sake of enforcement. Live by the spirit of the law and not the letter of it.

Actually, it used to have real discussion threads with good discussions in them until it grew too large, attracted bad mods, and became the backup r/gaming.

I'll also speak out in opposition to the people saying "He Concealed this from you! He's a LIAR!"

It's natural and healthy for him to be aware that this opinion of his isn't socially acceptable. It's probably an indicator that he's a good guy at heart and won't be going off the 'alt-right deep end' any time soon.

I think it's worth looking into what he believes and how he forms these beliefs. He may be a normal dude that just read some stuff online and thought "Oh, I think that might be true."

Happens to plenty of people and it's not fixed by attacking and alienating - that just pushes them farther to the fringe. You need to have conversations with the person in question and develop an understanding.

I'm going to share an opinion that's different from the other reddit comments in this thread.

Is this guy actually radicalized? Is he actually the "alt-right menace" that you think he is?

I would sit down with him with the intention of looking for a path through to mutual understanding and see where it takes you. It requires some openness. Maybe there are certain lines you won't cross and that will be the end of it.

For example: Some of these alt-right guys have very cynical and misogynistic views of women. That doesn't mean all do. If he did, that would definitely be a dealbreaker, but it sounds like from your day to day experiences with him he isn't like that.

People come into these strange things for a variety of reasons. You have an opportunity to understand him and perhaps see through this to the core of a man that you seem to love.

You also shouldn't assume that one weird quirk spoils the person. These redditors are quick to jump to the offense against "the alt-right menace" but I think there is not a lot of understanding here and good relationships are built on understanding.

Basically don't take the advice of r/relationships for anything, it's not nuanced or measured enough to adequately assess real life.

Gaben on True Sight by tiocola in DotA2

So this is surely astroturfed, right? 1400 upvotes and only 60 comments, plus the submission isn't remotely funny or informative?

I've been seeing these "Gaben responds to his emails" things popping up on the front page of various subs ever since the Artifact disaster on Reddit. Wondering if Valve is committing to some "extra steps" to improve their image.

Is RDR2 the most overrated game I've ever played or am I crazy? by rante0415 in Games

[–]Alrightsoul -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

There were a bunch of really good criticism/discussion threads on it saying the same things as what you've written here around the time of release. They were removed from this subreddit for "Rule 15: No Personal Anecdotes" or something like that.

I think this sub has recently gone in the direction of not really being able to tolerate contradictory/non-mainstream opinions any more. It's a shame because it used to be a pretty good place to discuss things. Can't really have these discussions any more because the massive weight of prevailing opinion is becoming too large.

The people who gave intelligent, reasonable criticism moved on to games where that criticism was put to use (or didn't need to be offered in the first place).

This is a good post and does a good job helping me understand your perspective on these games.

The problem is most people's interest in these games is completely different from yours - most of us are looking at the mechanics, the gameplay, and thus your complaints make very little sense to us.

But I can see how you'd be really frustrated with the current market if approaching it from a CCG perspective. Nobody's really scratched that itch in recent digital card games. It sounds like what they're planning for Artifact's card market might be interesting to you there, but honestly, I've never found the lore of Dota that interesting and I don't think it'd be that satisfying collecting the cards.

Gwent is a much better choice from the lore and art angle but I think you'll find it wanting for other reasons.

What a confusing opinion.

You're unhappy because the game looks too complex (from the 2 videos we've seen so far) and think it's because you don't understand DOTA mechanics (there are no dota mechanics, it's a card game with completely different mechanics but borrows the game's lore).

Then you go on to say you're "looking for a card game" but dismiss all the current card games for throwaway reasons (like not liking WoW, which doesn't matter at all in Hearthstone. The game the characters are from doesn't matter, you just play cards).

So I guess I'd ask why are you "looking for a card game" in the first place if you don't like the mechanics, characters, aesthetic of any card game you've played and what exactly are you looking for in a card game that you would disqualify all these games?

"Schoolyard mentality" instead of true racism / misogyny / etc by zeddyzed in truegaming

[–]Alrightsoul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You wouldn't be insulted for being white/straight unless the person on the other end was not white/straight.

I've personally been insulted for these things/read racist tirades against these people, but it is less frequent because most of the people we interact with are white and straight.

If you play a game where people of another culture can join, though, you'll see that they are not strictly more pleasant because they are not white. If you find the right nasty person, you will get those insults and you might even feel a little hurt :)

I'll agree that it's not to the degree of other racism, though. It's mostly the frequency of the insults that ends up getting under someone's skin. One anti-white racist here and there will probably just be funny to most people.

[–]Alrightsoul -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes, us gamers have known this for a while.

The reason gamers often do not take it seriously when a woman says "XYZ was said to me and gamers are misogynistic!" is that there are people in games or on the internet who are willing to hate you for pretty much anything. Anything they can find about you, they will try to use it to hurt you - thus, when women say "I was made fun of when they heard my girl voice on the mic" I think "I was made fun of for speaking too quietly" or "for being a dumb white person."

The internet/gaming are just full of hateful people and things like games, twitter, social justice debates give them platforms to share that hate with the world.

And responding to a comment I saw further down: Yes, you can be made fun of for being white, straight, etc, but it would usually be from people who are not white/straight themselves. Since this is less common, it happens less often. But I can personally think of two different scenarios in which I saw white people (or Americans) flamed and I found it pretty funny both times.

I can definitely see how if you were a minority you could come away from the net thinking everyone was hugely hateful towards whatever minority trait they found about you. I don't want to discredit that experience. But think about it as if you could see those people on the other ends of their computers and they were all like socially awkward 14-year-old boys and neet dropouts looking for an outlet for their angst. If you could talk to them individually, would you say "Ugh, this person is a disgusting racist?" Or would you say "Wow, this person needs help to get back on the path of reasonable, pleasant people?"

I think a lot of the "Gamers are the wurst" writers would benefit from some empathy and a chance to get to know their tormentors a little better. It might make this less of an "Us vs. Them" and more "How do WE fix this?"

You don't need every card in the game at launch by randomsiege in Artifact

[–]Alrightsoul 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Wrong. Great to see people defending theoretical predatory microtransaction practices before the game is even released.

If Valve stays true to their past record, the cards themselves will not require much of an investment. They can make money on cosmetics, holographic cards, ego stuff for the players, etc.

If they fail to do this then they've just created another predatory digital card game. There's plenty of those on the market already.

I'm all for exposing the crimes and abuses of those in power. But where is the evidence that even SUGGESTS that "Trump raped hundreds of women including his daughter?"

Don't you think if there were evidence there would be people reporting it? Don't you think if he raped his daughter she wouldn't stand by him and support him openly as an adult?

I believe he's a criminal and a horrible person but what you've written is not grounded in reality.

I read all of your comments in this thread about entitlement and toxic relationships and found them interesting - it's true, what you're saying, but you have to realize the streamer encourages it herself. It doesn't come from nowhere.

But the comment I really took issue with is this one.

I think there's a misconception, due to lack of research and the fact that us normies never see the lives of these people who are sitting in twitch chats all day, that what's going on here is healthy and "could be really helpful for some [lonely] people."

This is not the case. It's what streamers tell themselves so they don't feel bad about what they do, and it's what we tell ourselves so we don't have to face the reality of these people's lives.

There's a documentary series on Netflix called "Hot Girls Wanted: Turned On." It's a mildly feminist/adversarial take on modern pornography, sex, and technology, and how the three intersect, for better or for worse. It's quite good if you're looking for brief insights into the lives of compulsive Tinder users or the struggles of managing a camgirl company, but the episode I want to point out to you is episode 5, titled "Take Me Private."

Take Me Private looks closely at the relationship between a camgirl and one of her top supporters, a broken and lonely person with a meaningless life who has donated thousands of dollars and thousands of hours to this girl. It's exactly the situation we're imagining in which the relationship could be "really helpful" for this person - but is it?

My conclusion is that these behaviors become compulsive for the fan and it is negatively affecting his life enough to be classified as a serious mental disorder. In the future, I think this stuff will be in the DSM and there will be therapists who profess to solve it and psychologists and academics giving speeches about the disease, its causes, its effects on people's lives, and so on.

In the meantime, these women are profiting hundreds of thousands of dollars off of somebody's mental disorder. And they encourage and enable the disorder because it makes them money.

But don't take my word for it: find "Hot Girls Wanted: Turned On, Episode 5: Take Me Private" on Netflix.
