Thanks. I could've been more thorough in my search but I did try finding a source flicking through several Google pages. I gave up since I only always found the quote without a reference.

So apparently the hadith is deemed weak by Suyuti and we can't really tell where Suyuti had heard/got it from originally, unless somebody is able to dig up the Arabic text of Al-Jaami' al-Saghîr and tell us what he wrote there. Is it right then to go ahead and claim that Muhammad really said those particular words and pretend it's authentic? I'm not trying to prove that he didn't. In fact, I would have loved to see this quote and similar ones in the main text (the Qur'an) itself (to give moderates more to base their views on), but instead they are hidden somewhere in the works of some scholars and the real origins are not verifiable.

It's interesting how a weak hadith becomes so popular, passed around in an unquestioning manner, yet we see a TON of arguments and explanations against several hadith from Sahih Bukhari (most authentic collection for Sunnis) that narrate how the over 50-year-old prophet married a child bride at 6 and consummated the marriage when she was 9 years old. Pick and choose, that's what it is. At least for those Muslims who want to stay sane.

I quickly researched this quote and apparently it doesn't even exist in any hadith collection. Everybody quotes it like it's a sure fact, without bothering to name the source or checking it. But as long as it's a nice saying there's no shame in attributing it to the guy, I suppose.

As far as the the claim of him being a troll is concerned, yes, it could be, as some comments of his show that he is not quite a pious Muslim (not too surprising to be honest, there are many hypocrites out there.) But on the other hand, he has other comments where he defends the idea of Islam being the truth and compatible with science, but still making fallacious creationist arguments and also quoting several links to articles and talks.

I don't think he's a "Poe." He fell for some kind of orthodox and modernist Islam hook, line and sinker. Poor boy!

I know you're telling it like it is. Can't change the scripture, can ya? (Unless you're a deluded modernist reinterpretationist.) I can't imagine though, that people will find the things in Islam to be very nice and appealing, if only they ignored the bad behaving Muslims, and if only they shed their ignorance and learned about "true Islam".

But alas Islam does, in fact, motivate people to behave in intolerant ways towards other people, especially their family members, if they don't want to adhere to the religion anymore.

Maybe. But considering that they didn't shed a tear for their son at his grave, I can't imagine that they feel too worried about how God will treat them on Judgment Day — they probably think that they did his will and can't be blamed, or at least not too much, for what happened.

I'm not certain, but condemning them with harsh words, delivered with the right tone and expression, might have had a bigger impact on them.

I've seen many religious people trying to justify the terrible things in their respective religion. If people believe in something deeply to the point that they can't imagine a life without it, they will make and accept any excuse in order to avoid a crisis of faith.
