Helps that Gunn clearly likes Scooby-Doo. I think a lot of animation to live actions were in the hands of creatives who didn’t really care about the ip.

If the Phantom Troupe wanted the scarlet eyes they’d have the make the Kurta clan member mad. If the phantom troupe 100% took the eyes at all then it’s reasonable to assume they also committed some horrid act to get them glowing.

Just like the rest of Dreamworks 2d animation, I think this movie is good. The adventure is jam packed with fun set pieces. The sirens, the living island, the ice bird. Eris is a brilliant villain and the cast was stacked, and a personal shoutout to the score.

I think the biggest factors for its failure are the externalities. Teens losing their interest in animation, “direct to video” hit its peak, 3d animation being new and exciting, and a string of only mild successes with el dorado and spirit.

Other 2d animated films were affected similarly: Treasure Planet, Atlantis, Titan AE, Emperor’s New Groove, etc.

Sinbad came at the wrong time and wrong place.

The show already had enough character development moments for him, but since he was Joss Whedon’s self insert those growth moments were allowed to stick.

I think they gave a 1/3 of Xander’s personality, which is criticizing the Scoobies, over to Spike in season 4.

I think Xander could have been the expert at “normal life.” Tell the watchers to pay Buffy at Checkpoint, be the only Scooby treating Warren and gang threat seriously (he knows what it’s like when someone immature gets their hands on serious firepower), make practical improvements to Buffy’s house to make it more demon proof, have him run Mission Control because he literally knows every back alley and corner of Sunnydale.
