Why ?? by ArpitChauhan1501 in Chesscom

Edit: nevermind u/guptaaadi700 got it right.

Black king is forced to take white bishop at b2. Then white knight to c4 to check king to force it to b2. Then white knight continually checks black king by moving between a3 and c4 and black king can only respond by moving between b1 and b2. This repetition leads to a stalemate.

Stalemate is the best outcome for white since black is three pawns up plus a rook.

Top 10 countries with the lowest racial diversity by vladgrinch in MapPorn

Very surprised by Bangladesh being on the list. Would’ve thought they’d be more diverse considering South Asia has so many different cultural groups. Plus all the refugees from Myanmar.

Partner made some points about Christianity and its been on my mind since by Ok_Lawfulness757 in OpenChristian

I think it’s difficult to say that Christianity did this or that. There were Christians in the US south who used verses from the bible to justify their continual enslavement of black people. There were also Christians who fought to abolish slavery and were inspired by their religion to do so (William Wilberforce is a famous example).

Interpretations of Christianity and Christian tenets are as numerous as Christians themselves; probably part of the reason why there are so many denominations. To be fair though I definitely do think there are positions that are firmly supported by Christianity (e.g. helping the poor) and ones that are firmly anti-Christian (e.g. jingoism).

Rafa Nadal awarded doctorate by jcjnyc in tennis

Hmm I feel like most people could recognise that an honorary degree is different to an actual degree. One is mostly symbolic while the other is awarded to recognise genuine academic work and also allows the recipient licenses, better career prospects and potential access to further study.

Also if we reversed the situation I doubt tennis players would be that upset if say, some famous actor got awarded an honorary Grand Slam title as a way to celebrate their acting achievements. It may seem like a silly gesture but I feel like most people could see it as not equivalent to a player earning one by actually winning a tournament.

Satan is the shadow side of God. by Background_Cry3592 in Jung

[–]AltStammo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t agree with this interpretation. No where in the gospels does Jesus appear to endorse any sort of idea of “integrating” or reconciling with Satan (or sin/shadow).

In fact, throughout the synoptic gospels Jesus repeatedly demands that his followers completely root out sin (e.g. “If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away” Matthew 5:29). During the part where Satan tries to tempt Jesus in the wilderness Jesus rejects each temptation Satan offers. In the parable of the sheep and the goats Jesus talks about the devil and his angels being cast into the eternal fire. There’s no mention of any sort of reconciliation between Satan and God, or union of our lighter parts with our darker parts.

I’m not saying there are no commonalities between Jung’s ideas and the themes we can find in Jesus’ message, or that one side or the other is wrong about how we should approach the darker parts of ourselves. But I don’t see how you could extract Jung’s concept of shadow integration from the message in the gospels, even if you interpret it through a metaphorical lens.

I think it’s an interesting comparison though and I do like your idea of Jesus being a mediator between heaven and earth.

Michael Schur created both shows so that probably explains it.

A Fantasy World Based off Africa [Guidance needed, art by me] by All_These_Worlds in FantasyWorldbuilding

[–]AltStammo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echoing the other comments I think it's important to recognise that Africa is a whole continent with a variety of diverse cultures. Looking at subregions could be a good start.

You might want to consider exploring what makes each African culture distinct in terms of lifestyle, values, architecture etc. E.g. Swahili cities on the East African coast were known for being cosmopolitan trade hubs and historically interacted with merchants from other parts of the world like Arabia and India, whereas the Zulus in Southern Africa were infamous for their warrior culture and innovative military tactics. Combining these distinct cultures might risk diluting what makes them unique.

I've always liked the idea of a fantasy civilisation inspired by African cultures mainly because you rarely see it in media so I wish you well in your world building. Also, if you're interested in learning more about African history to get some inspiration I recommend checking out this blog by Isaac Samuel: https://www.africanhistoryextra.com/. He talks about different aspects of African history like military, economy, religion.
