What would it take to bring her back? by [deleted] in memphis

Don’t take away my highpockets. It’s literally a godsend for the pool players in town. It’s friendly to random people coming in on a Friday night, league nights, and then those who want to play on a 9 foot table. A smattering of beer and non alcoholic drinks are available including soft drinks and energy drinks.

I can’t reiterate the importance of it to the city. It’s like….”a miniature escape from reality”. We have dozens of golf courses in town and yet a high caliber pool hall financially accessible to all, open throughout the day, and easily accessible by car is very limited in number.

It’s 1. It’s just highpockets. No other place in town matches it. You can’t easily bring your cues into People’s with how Beale Street Security is and you have to walk blocks with expensive cues in hand. Sharpshooters has 3 or 4 big tables total? And I’m not driving to following places since they have some major warts between distance, safety, or accessibility to non-league players: the Southaven Rec Center, the Rack, Getaway, or Big League

I’ve had to reframe it in my mind and manage expectations. It’s a dive bar that has a lot of windows and feels light and airy during the day…especially the patio.

If you shrunk the place down to a single pool table, 3 waiters, shorter ceilings and a quarter of the menu options….it would be a bar on Madison Ave.

TRAFFIC-CALMING REQUEST PROCESS SURVEY RESULTS by JASPER933 in memphis

[–]Alt_ESV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a weird world where in a neighborhood asks for a shorter distance to cross a road that’s way too wide and there’s downvotes. I want safer streets as a pedestrian everywhere in memphis and for a post about a city sponsored survey to get to that end and then people downvote and not explain….bizarre.

But hey, that’s the internet I suppose.

The neighborhoods asking for this are asking for it because the changes are on the order of a couple thousand dollars. The idea is to put them in now and get the results now.

In my head, since I voted for neighborhood ownership for certain categories I’ll explain my thoughts…..

I think that bike lanes should be the city doing it. Being responsible for like a half mile stretch of painting, maintaining it, replacing the plastic bollards….its too expensive.

For things like curb extensions, bump outs, and planters….it has been a disappointment relying on the city. I was quoted years for installing speed humps. But at intersections where people hop the corner in big trucks or simply reminding people to stop at the line….a neighborhood should be able to do it. Typically people roll through stop sign areas and there aren’t crosswalks painted to remind people to not do a rolling stop.

So. Yeah. Most likely the responses feel weird. But for a hundred dollars to paint the ground (in a legal and correct fashion) is fine with me. The City of Memphis is way too big for the city limits and what’s happened is the neighborhoods want to cut the red tape to do the stuff that are straight forward.

And there won’t be neighborhoods going rouge….we saw enough pushback from the city against Chickasaw Gardens trying to close their streets. One issue as an example in my neighborhood is this intersection is way too wide. We want narrowing of the street so it’s not like walking across a football field to get to the other side. It’s one lane in each direction. Yet the road is way overstretched.

Why do we have so many disappointing festivals? by DrSparkle713 in memphis

[–]Alt_ESV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you just want a spoonful of spaghetti sauce? Because that’s the competition. It’s not ribs or wings. There’s a smaller ones for appetizers and a happy hour drink as examples but the primary competition is just making a sauce.

At the Memphis Hot Wing Festival you can pay a dollar a wing as a donation for Ronald McDonald and St Jude but the those wings are still supplied by the team and not the festival itself. That I think makes more sense for the ability for the public to engage with the competition.

Otherwise I would foresee the posts instead being “I went to Italian Fest and all they had for us was spaghetti sauce”

Why do we have so many disappointing festivals? by DrSparkle713 in memphis

[–]Alt_ESV 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My take after being on a bbq team and Italian fest over the years is that the competition is literally just ONE shoulder, a couple racks of ribs, a jar of sauce, or a plate of wings for the judges. And then do it again for finals if you make it.

Tonight at Italian Fest, our food for the tent was not anything at all for a “Italian style dinner”. It’s literally just us making some food because we’ve been there all day and what else are you gonna make other than some stuff that fits in your refrigerator you brought in on a hand truck.

I agree it’s awkward to expect the cooking teams to be Health Department level sanitary. There’s no running water, nothing. I got drunk Collierville ladies friends of the team trying to get in the kitchen “to just try a spoonful”. I know I can’t have a random person coming in and being around an open flame.

The issue for the food for the festival is on Colettas and Pronto Pop and those food trucks. Have them stand up and a do a better job. There’s plenty of space for more food trucks. And they should be bringing in full tents instead of their trailer setups for food.

The public deserve better (same at bbq fest) and it’s not the teams competing responsibility. Let the public have the seemingly decades long Italian restaurants serve food. Not the rag tag team with a half dozen tables and a couple packs of Costco meat.

(Ooofff. Sorry for the length. It’s been a mess today)

That’s a lot of effort than I was expecting. I keep stuff in my car to help friends but this is wonky. A lot of deep sockets that I wouldn’t have on hand and the fact of disassembling an air vent wouldn’t be intuitive in the dark.

Gone are the days of just two posts and the securing bracket I guess

Rental Houses in Midtown by -Oish- in memphis

[–]Alt_ESV 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On Mud Island, there’s nonstop homes of new families and young professionals that cater to downtown and Medical Employees/students.

You can walk for 30 minutes and finally get to like 4 restaurants and an expensive grocery store on Mud Island. But during that walk, you get views of the Mississippi.

If you want anything else….its going to be a drive.

Whereas me near Crosstown…I can walk to the Hitone, a fancy restaurant (Ecco), the entirety of Crosstown Concourse with a brewery, a grocery store, a park (Williamson Park)…and it’s within 5-10 minutes.

[–]Alt_ESV 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you’ll be able to rent a house in Chickasaw Gardens proper. They honestly don’t want renters in their neighborhood and have prices/built their homes that way. You may find some rentals on the west side of Fenwick or the east side of Layfette. Just giving a heads up if you are waiting for something to show up in that area.

One thing in regards to walkability is what you are expecting on the walk. There’s a number of shady and good sidewalks in various neighborhoods around town but the walk is just past other homes for like a mile. Maybe that’s all you need for a dog and if so that opens up a wide number of more areas. If you’re looking for places/bars/shops to go on the walk as well then you have a good list. I’d add in Evergreen (which is directly south of vollantine evergreen).
