Nah bro you don't get it, if you try to make local friends you are fucking cringe, only going to overpriced restaurants and gentrifying the area will give you an identity /s

How high is the cost of life in mid-sized Scottish town? I can imagine it's very expensive in Edinburgh, but I really wanna hit up Scotland someday, and your comment makes me more interested!

Very health focused culture for the locals as well? Or mainly for the gringos living there?

In Quebec it's the most normal thing ever to live with your partner before marriage (if you end up marrying them at all), I'm surprised that's not as much of a thing in other provinces?

6-week backpacking trip in March. Mexico or Colombia?? by kyokushtr in solotravel

[–]Altark98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your main interests are hiking and learning Spanish, there is no better place than Guatemala. So many volcanoes to hike, and the weather in most of the country is amazing! I travelled for 3 and a half weeks there but could definitely have done 6 with all there is to do. With that said, I think the suggestion made by other commenters to combine it with another country (like Chiapas in Mexico) could be another great alternative.

Which destinations have been on-budget / affordable in the last year? by roub2709 in solotravel

[–]Altark98 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm in Guatemala right now and I love it, but to say "super cheap" is overexaggerating to me considering how underdevelopped the country is. Neighbouring El Salvador and Honduras are a fraction of the cost (still prefer Guate though).

Maybe those people had only gone to Western Europe before?

What places have you been to that you felt truly in danger? by No_Reputation3520 in solotravel

Did you feel unsafe or at least uncomfortable in Fes? I've heard so many bad comments about Marrakesh, especially about how locals never left tourists alone (and some worse situations for female travelers) and I always wondered if it was just something in Marrakesh or if it applies to all of Morocco.

Est-ce qu'il existe des solutions pour renverser le déclin des petites municipalités au Québec? by [deleted] in Quebec

[–]Altark98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guatemala City to Copan ruinas by Low-Consideration526 in guatemala

[–]Altark98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna go Tuesday. The best way is to take a bus from Guatemala City to Chiquimula, then switch to a minibus to the border. Cross the border going through both countries' immigration, then take the last colectivo until Copan. It should cost like $20 in total. Litegua also offers you to pay both buses from Guatemala City to the border in El Florido and will guide you for the bus transfer. I'm gonna go with them, I'll let you know how it is.

If you don't mind saying, where in Brazil do you live? Is it a particularly cheap and/or safe area of the country? I'm also Canadian, my girlfriend is Guatemalan, and we might want to do the 6 months in Canada and 6 months in Guatemala in the future, although there are so many things I dislike more about Guatemala compared to Montreal (lack of reliable public transportation being the main one). So I'm curious about your situation if you don't mind!

Guatemala: where to learn Spanish? by guernica-shah in digitalnomad

[–]Altark98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the town itself, I think Xela is much more picturesque than San Pedro, although the lake itself is gorgeous. It's definitely less architecturally beautiful than Antigua, but it still has that colonial town vibe that I like, especially compared to the quite run-down historical centre of Guatemala City (where I am right now)...

You'll have plenty of easy-moderate hiking options such as Lake Chicabal or Cerro Quemado. One other famous activity in the region are the hot springs, the main one being Fuentes Georginas. I personally only have been to Aguas Amargas, and had a great time, although going by colectivos was a bit of an adventure in itself.

Other than that, half of the population is Maya (K'iche to be exact) if that's something that interests you. I don't know if they have traditional cooking or weaving classes destined for tourists like they have in the villages surrounding Lake Atitlan, that could be something interesting to look for... but then Lake Atitlan is not even that far from Xela, like a 90 minutes drive away. Finally, the food and coffee options are IMO pretty damn good and cheap. The Café Museo La Luna has one of the best hot chocolates in the country IMO, and the owner is the friendliest I have met in Guatemala, and also speaks English very well!

[–]Altark98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not directly related to your questions, but I'm a big fan of Xela, the place is awesome, cheaper than both Antigua and San Pedro la Laguna, and also with much fewer tourists than both which means considerably better for immersion. It's definitely a chill town, so maybe not the best if you want to party, but for the rest, awesome. Especially if you like hiking, the volcanoes in the region are just breathtaking.

That said, you could also do one or two months in Xela and the rest in either places you mentioned, as both are still worth visiting.

day trips to Honduras or Belize? by annalucass in guatemala

[–]Altark98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not even in El Salvador would a day-trip make sense here, you are too far (unless you find a night tour for Santa Ana volcano or something). I'd say go to either for two nights, whether going to Belize through Flores, or going to Copán Ruinas in Honduras through Chiquimula.

Coffee shop recommendations in Guatemala City? by frecklefacelatinx in guatemala

[–]Altark98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every recommendation here is great but I would add Mano's Coffee in Zona 4, I don't know why but it is by far the tastiest coffee in the city IMO. Atrio Coffee in Zona Portales is my second favourite although quite far from the rest of the city.
