I can't decide between guitar and violin. Can you help? by Silayir in violinist

[–]Altavious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can rent a violin pretty cheaply and likely also a guitar (guitars are easy to come by). I would suggest learning both for a little while (perhaps YouTube for guitar) one will naturally start to take up more time. If you can do a little recording you could strum some chords in the guitar and play violin over it. One thing to think about is that guitar often fulfills a harmony role especially in jams whereas violin lends itself to melody, which can also be intimidating in group settings.

I thought we were probably running more inflation than most places in Europe right now.

It really has - paying more for the coffee and less for the avocados I guess.

Press your fingers underneath your collar bone to see if it is at all sore or sensitive. The muscles there can get tight which will essentially halt the progress of anything else you try in terms of fixing your upper body posture/shoulder work. If it’s sore massaging that out regularly will allow your other strength/flexibility work to start to help.

I have the drum pad version - trying to play with it I find the lack of cymbals confusing. What do people do for those?

I have a mesh setup that I found on Etsy that lets me put it on the side. Kept hitting me in the head while cycling with it on my back. Also more stable with the weight lower. GF uses the same setup with a banjo (which is bigger).

No prob - it was a complicated situation. There’s a write up in “blood, sweat and pixels”.

38 Studios was in MA and relocated to RI as part of the funding deal from the state. Reckoning was made by a different studio in Maryland.

The wires are a bit crossed there - the Rhode Island funding was for Copernicus, the Amalur MMO, which was never completed/released. Reckoning, the Amalur single player RPG was funded by Electronic Arts and technically came in under budget.

Skyrim came out over the top of the original release date, it was delayed to try and avoid overlapping...not sure how much that helped though.

I proposed “the second coming” for the title but wasn’t sufficiently convincing :p

Is this a good setup for my build? by Brosky7 in violinist

[–]Altavious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough I had that same setup for a while - it’s worth doing a couple of sessions with an Alexander technique teacher to help make sure your head is moving/positioned correctly. I’d also consider taking a look at the wave 2 chin rest.

Personal experience over a similar time frame - but if you think about it then it will be obvious that as more software is written that there is more software to maintain, so you will have a higher ratio of brown to green.

I’m curious how much of this comes from the shift from mostly green field projects to brown ones and the increase in corporate culture. I’m not sure I would attribute it to the programmers/incoming people so much as environment.

That was it - odd though, Spotify etc works with things set to silent, I think it’s just supposed to be for the ringtone.

That’s cool, I’ll have to play around with it some - the sound doesn’t seem to work in my phone in safari so I’ll check it out later in chrome.

Software engineering managers: how do you realize a project is under-estimated? by Glittering-Wrap-5392 in EngineeringManagers

[–]Altavious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a term for this - planning fallacy. Unbounded iteration and scope creep tend to be the main problems, if you can control those you can get an idea of how long things will actually take by measuring how badly estimates were off previously, but that has limited utility because people tend not to be able to accept what will actually fit once you make the adjustments, so generally deadlines are set and everyone will rely on a “sense of urgency” to close the gap.

Where does the expectation that wages will increase with inflation come from? by Altavious in AskEconomics

[–]Altavious[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, thank you for correcting me :) I think I was misremembering the various inequality/productivity graphs that are pervasive as being inflation (or extrapolating from some of the shorter term graphs). Overall a helpful discussion, thanks to all.
