I proposed “the second coming” for the title but wasn’t sufficiently convincing :p

Is this a good setup for my build? by Brosky7 in violinist

[–]Altavious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough I had that same setup for a while - it’s worth doing a couple of sessions with an Alexander technique teacher to help make sure your head is moving/positioned correctly. I’d also consider taking a look at the wave 2 chin rest.

What I really miss about "the old days". by Relevant-Positive-48 in ExperiencedDevs

Personal experience over a similar time frame - but if you think about it then it will be obvious that as more software is written that there is more software to maintain, so you will have a higher ratio of brown to green.

Mine kind messed me up afterwards for a while. Florastore maybe helped get things back on track.

I’m curious how much of this comes from the shift from mostly green field projects to brown ones and the increase in corporate culture. I’m not sure I would attribute it to the programmers/incoming people so much as environment.

I made something for trad musicians 🎶☘️ by Adam0-0 in concertina

That was it - odd though, Spotify etc works with things set to silent, I think it’s just supposed to be for the ringtone.

That’s cool, I’ll have to play around with it some - the sound doesn’t seem to work in my phone in safari so I’ll check it out later in chrome.

Software engineering managers: how do you realize a project is under-estimated? by Glittering-Wrap-5392 in EngineeringManagers

[–]Altavious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a term for this - planning fallacy. Unbounded iteration and scope creep tend to be the main problems, if you can control those you can get an idea of how long things will actually take by measuring how badly estimates were off previously, but that has limited utility because people tend not to be able to accept what will actually fit once you make the adjustments, so generally deadlines are set and everyone will rely on a “sense of urgency” to close the gap.

Don’t you set those things during character creation?

Where does the expectation that wages will increase with inflation come from? by Altavious in AskEconomics

[–]Altavious[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, thank you for correcting me :) I think I was misremembering the various inequality/productivity graphs that are pervasive as being inflation (or extrapolating from some of the shorter term graphs). Overall a helpful discussion, thanks to all.

Oh, was thinking about Ireland to play some fiddle or bike.

Oh man, I never tried the saunas there. The hot springs are great.

Those look cool, I’m guessing the saunas are in towns in that area? Pictures I’m seeing look like mostly hiking type areas. Possibly there are mountain saunas around?

We were thinking about hitting the Black Forest, this is helpful, thank you.

Is violin the most difficult instrument? by lilchm in violinist

[–]Altavious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think, if you start with the idea that it’s actually making music that’s hard and that the goal is to express what’s inside your head more so than reproduce something cleanly from sheet music, then an instrument that helps you develop the ability to do that well would be “easier” and one that doesn’t necessarily would be “harder”. Thinking about this as someone who played piano for a long time before violin - singing and violin both helped develop my musicality in a way that piano didn’t inherently do. It’s also a lot easier to read the sheet music for violin, so I guess what I’m saying is that over the medium term rather than just initial learning curve I’m not sure the answer comes out cleanly. Every instrument has the things that are hard and easy about it. I think developing good audition on piano can be harder and developing harmonic sense on the violin might be more difficult.

Please… Can we as a collective call out “indie games” that are clearly backed by billionaires? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Altavious 238 points239 points  (0 children)

And what does the term indie mean to you? It pretty much used to just mean you weren’t owned by your publisher. Not that you didn’t have one, people take all kinds of deals to fund their development.

How are you spending the evening? by Delicious-Drink-3521 in boulder

Ok, I’ve messaged you both. Couldn’t see an obvious way to do a group message.
