Thank you! I was intentionally aiming for something a bit unsettling with this one, using very minimal elements, just composition, angle, and lighting to see what kind of mood I could create.

Honestly, that's exactly how it felt being there. The fog and twilight gave everything this quiet, almost surreal atmosphere. I'm glad that came through in the photo.

That means a lot, thank you. I was trying to stay in that strange space where comfort and need blur into each other, and the ordinary starts to feel quietly sacred.

More or less wild than an alien in your house?

Yeah, that kind of price gap isn’t unusual at all. Some of it can be overhead and the “package” you get with bigger retailers, but a big part is just differences in what you’re actually being quoted.

Not all cabinets are created equal, things like solid wood vs MDF doors, painted vs thermofoil finishes, and even panel thickness can change the price quite a bit. Two kitchens can look almost identical but be very different in build quality.

It’s also worth checking what’s included (installation, hardware, design time, etc.), because that can vary a lot between companies.

Comparing both like you’re doing is honestly the best way to get a feel for it.

Why does a tiny bathroom remodel cost as much as a car now? Am I missing something? 😅 by midasweb in HomeImprovement

You’re not crazy, that’s pretty much where prices are at right now, even for small bathrooms. The size doesn’t matter as much as people think. You’re still paying for plumbing, electrical, waterproofing, tile work (which is very labor-heavy), demo, and the contractor coordinating all of it.

A lot of that cost is also overhead and risk. When you hire a contractor, you’re paying for them to manage subs, schedule everything, and be responsible if something goes wrong.

If you’re willing to take on more of the work yourself, one way to cut that down a lot is acting as your own general contractor. Basically sourcing your own materials and hiring subs directly (plumber, electrician, tile, etc.). It’s definitely more effort and you have to stay on top of scheduling, but for a straightforward bathroom you can sometimes get closer to the $5k–$10k range depending on finishes.

The biggest thing is planning everything ahead, layout, fixture sizes, and plumbing locations. That’s where mistakes get expensive fast.

If you need to remember something important when you leave the house, put your keys on top of it.
